How To Treat Mold With Lemons
Lemons are known for their high concentration of citric acid that helps in breaking down the mold. Even better, they have nice smelling citrus that will let you enjoy the cleaning process.
Youll only need to squiz at least three to five lemons, then pour the solution onto the mold-affected area. Youll then let it sit for approximately five minutes before wiping it off with a damp towel.
If your surface has tough mold stains, consider repeating the above procedure, but this time youll have to scrub the surface. The best thing about using lemons is that they are non-toxic, and you can use them to get rid of mildew.
Another reason is that they are safe for your health and the environment and readily available than chemical-based black mold removers.
Is White Mold Dangerous
While mildew and similar types of mold are less of a danger and more of a hindrance, white mold is a health hazard. Inhalation of white mold spores, especially over a long period of time, can cause mold-induced asthma, allergic fungal sinusitis, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis , and hypersensitivity pneumonitis.

How To Remove Mold From Wood

The good news is that if the affected area is no larger than ten square feet and you arent dealing with toxic black mold, you can eliminate the mold yourself using everyday household cleaners. But dont delayholding off on this project will give the mold colony a chance to expand, and prolonged exposure can be bad for your health.
What if youre dealing with black mold? It can be difficult to distinguish toxic black mold from other species that are black in color, so its best to call in a professional in this situation. Toxic black mold is particularly harmful when inhaled, so you shouldnt touch it.

How Do You Remove Mold On Wood
I very rarely suggest a DIY approach to mold removal. Instead, I recommend you consult with a mold remediation company. One wrong move and you can contaminate your entire home.
If you do have a VERY small area of mold and wish to try the DIY approach, please be sure you have the following personal protective equipment:
- Protective clothing like a Tyvek suit

Tips For Mold Prevention
After you learn how to remove mold, focus on preventing it in the future. Controlling dampness is the key to stopping most mold. The worst infestations usually occur in damp crawl spaces, attics, walls where water leaked in from the outside, and in basements with poor foundation drainage. Stopping leaks, ensuring good ventilation in attics, keeping crawl spaces dry and routing water away from the foundation are the best defenses against mold.
Mildewcide in paint is usually effective for controlling surface mold in damp rooms like bathrooms, and outside in shady areas. Many paints already have mildewcide in them. Check with your paint dealer about mold removal products.

How To Get Rid Of Mold On Walls
Mold on your interior walls can be a hint that youve got a water problem. Behind that wall, you may have a leaky pipe or a drainage issue. Or it could mean you have a ventilation issue. Does the bathroom have a vent? If not, moisture may be building up whenever you shower, encouraging mold growth.
If there is a water problem, any mold you kill by scrubbing is only going to come back. Fix these problems first. If you suspect a leak, clean the area and see how quickly the mold comes back. If it pops up quickly, you may need to hire someone to fix the problem.
To scrub mold off your walls, use a heavy-duty sponge soaked in a bleach/water solution. While wearing a protective mask and gloves, scrub the tainted spot with your solution. For stubborn patches of mold, you may need to let the solution soak in for a few minutes. If that still doesnt work, you can use specially formulated mold remover and mix it in with your bleach solution. Once done scrubbing, make sure to dry off the area you scrubbed.
If Necessary Sand The Wood
These cleaning solutions should take care of your mold problem, but if youve got some stubborn traces left under the surface, you have one last resort: sanding.
- Use 100-grit sandpaper to rub out the affected portion, taking care not to sand away too much of the surrounding areas.
- Repeat Step 2 to remove the dust and any loosened mold spores.

Other Mold Prevention Methods
Your first plan of attack is always preventing growth in the first place. To do this, you need to find out what is causing the moisture in your crawl space.
Check your dirt and your pipes. If your pipe is leaking, fix it. If the issues seem to be the dirt, you can place a dehumidifier or moisture absorber in your crawl space.

Is Spraying Peroxide On Studs With Mold Enough
After removing some drywall in a basement that had mold on the bottom 1-2 inches, I was left with the base stud still black. Per the recommendation of a local company, I sprayed everything with hydrogen peroxide. I’m now trying to decide if I should have the framing removed and replaced, or if it is OK to drywall over this stud:

- Is there a seal between the bottom plate and the concrete? FWIW, I are not a fan of the ‘trap wood behind a vapor barrier’ method of doing basements. It leads to problems exactly like this.
I’ve seen peroxide and bleach mixtures used frequently to remove mold on studs. The Natural Resources Defense Council suggests mixing a 1 in 10 bleach solution to clean. The NRDC might be a little too “green” for some people, but the Environmental Research Laboratory at the University of Arizona also has a great article regarding this. They suggest a bleach to water ratio of 3/4 cup to 1 gal and a minimum 5 minute contact time before rinsing to inactivate and neutralize the mold. Since hydrogen peroxide and bleach do virtually the same thing, I would say the mold is dead if you allowed enough contact time.
However, my concern is the vapor barrier in your picture.

The Difference Between Mildew And Mold
The most common type of mold found in homes is mildew. Mildew is a surface mold that grows in warm, damp places like basements, laundry rooms, and shady porches. Mildew begins as a gray or white powdery colony and eventually turns black or brown. To test whether the wood is covered with mildew or just dirt, dab the stain with a cotton swab dipped in household chlorine bleach. If the stain lightens or disappears after two or three minutes, it’s mildew. If not, it’s probably just dirt.
Mildew can discolor and slowly harm wood surfaces. But there are much more dangerous molds that can damage the structure of your home. If a fuzzy or slimy black or green mold is visible and the drywall or wood underneath is soft or crumbles, there is irreversible rot. The damaged surfaces must be removed immediately.
Treat Wood To Prevent Reinfestation
A wood mold infestation may recur in a structure as long as conditions remain conducive to fungus growth. Water damage or high relative humidity levels provide the moisture and wood contains cellulose, which is a rich source of nutriment for mold. While it is crucial to take measures to stop leaks or lower excessive moisture, treating wood can also prevent a problem from recurring.
If a single application of vinegar does not get rid of mold, consider reapplying this treatment at a stronger concentration, up to full 5% or 6% strength. In some cases, Borax, an alkaline mineral salt cleaner, may be a better choice. This substance gets absorbed under the surface of the wood. Once wood treated with Borax or vinegar has completely dried, furniture or building materials are ready to be treated with a mold-resistant finish, primer and paint.

What Types Of Mold Grow On Wood
A study at Oregon State University revealed that Douglas fir sapwood was colonized by over 45 types of mold within six weeks after sawing. Most of these species are common to many other materials, while a few were specialized and only grow on wood.
In short, there are many types of mold that grow on wood. Any mold growth on wood should be removed properly.
What Does Mold Look Like On Wood
Mold tends to start out as small, whitish-gray patches that are just barely visible.
However, if left undisturbed long enough, mold will break down organic materials such as wood, paper and insulation by dissolving them with digestive enzymes.
On solid material such as drywall or furniture the fungus will also release chemicals that discolor the surface.
This is why it is important that you find and remove mold as soon as you can.

Scrub Moldy Surfaces With Mold Cleaner
- Scrub the surface mold stains from walls and wood trim with a mixture of one quart water and 1/2-cup bleach mold cleaner to kill the mold.
- Use a soft brush and work until signs of the mold disappear.
- After scrubbing the surfaces, allow the bleach solution to continue to penetrate the surfaces and dry.
- Wipe off, but DO NOT RINSE these surfaces.
- Set trim in direct sunlight to dry. Scrub concrete with TSP or automatic dishwasher detergent.
Black Mold Removal With Essential Oils
There is much more than essential oils can do apart from their use in household activities. For instance, tea tree oil is among the safest way of doing away with black molds since its insect repellant, a deodorizer, and an antiseptic.
You can use the product to effectively clean away molds from the wood surfaces and prevent them from regrowing.
The steps include mixing a teaspoon of tea oil with water in a spray bottle, then spraying the affected areas, and giving the surface at least an hour to dry. After drying, wipe off the surface with a dry cloth or towel.
Since essential oils can irritate your skin, consider having some protective gear while using the product.

How To Treat Mold On Wood Studs
Its easy to know how to treat mold on wood studs if you know what to do. Follow these simple four steps to sanitize the wood. Step one is wearing protective clothing and ensure that your face and hands are well covered. The second step is to ensure that you have enough cleaning products, and that includes detergents and scrub brushes. In the third step youll wash the wood stud with detergents and scrub the surface thoroughly. Rinse the surface with clean water. Finally, sanitize the wood surface with a mixture of chlorine and water. Allow the wood to dry thoroughly to prevent the growth of mold.
How Much Mold Must Be Removed
Following a properly executed mold cleanup, if there is a future mold problem in a building it is unlikely to be due to having left behind an “inoculation” of problem mold, and more likely to be due to a new building leak that was left unattended.
Good practice for the extent of and means of physical removal of moldy debris varies by material.
For drywall we remove all visibly moldy material and continue removing drywall to no less than the next adjacent stud, rafter, or joist.
For fiberglass or other porous building insulation which has been wet, we remove all suspect insulation and all insulation within 24″ of the suspect material. However if moldy and wet conditions were long-standing in a building, removal of all of the insulation may be necessary.
For building insulation that has been exposed to dusty conditions or high levels of airborne mold it is often more cost effective to simply remove the material, clean the surfaces, and re insulate than to spend that same money on testing the insulation for mold.
Generally it is less costly to remove and discard more material than to “finish” the job and then discover that it needs to be done over again because the initial work was insufficient.
Framing lumber, or roof or wall sheathing that is not rotted does not need to be replaced. Unless framing lumber has been actually damaged, such as by rot, replacing it due to mold contamination is not justified and wouldbe improper.
