How To Treat Black Mold In Bathroom

Air Ducts / Hvac System

How To Remove Black Mold From Your Bathroom Ceiling

An HVAC systems ductwork is susceptible to moisture buildup and condensation, leading to mold growth. Air ducts require specialized mold remediation to avoid leaving airborne spores behind.

When you or an inspector discover mold in your HVAC system, turn it off immediately. Keeping it off helps ensure airborne spores dont spread through your home and cause health issues.

On average, mold remediation in an HVAC system and its air ducts costs between $1,900 to $6,500.

Beneath The Bathroom Sink

Mold growth can occur under a bathroom sink in 3 common scenarios. First, mold growth can appear after a leak from the water supply lines or the drain pipe. Typically a leak in the supply lines will cause mold growth and water damage to the bottom of the vanity/cabinet. A leak in the drain line is less common, but can occur in the cabinet or in the adjacent wall.

Second, mold can occur due to condensation. Typically this happens in a home with poorly or completely uninsulated exterior walls. These walls remain cool, while the interior of the home is heated. This temperature differential creates a surface below the dew point, and thus, condensation occurs. A moisture meter is helpful for differentiating condensation based mold growth from leaky plumbing. Except for extreme circumstances, the condensation based mold growth will not exhibit a measurable level of increased moisture in the wall. However, mold growth from a leaky pipe certainly will.

But looks can be deceiving. Damage from old leaks can leave stains that can appear actively wet. In the image below a moisture meter shows the moisture content of the cabinet is normal.

Notice the damage to the plywood beneath the countertop.

In The Bathroom Ceiling

  • Spray the moldy ceiling with an anti-fungal solution, and sponge it into corners as needed.
  • Let the solution dry for half an hour before cleaning and rinsing with fresh water.

Power Tip: Always wear wrap-around goggles when youre cleaning mold off a ceiling.

How to clean black mold from bathroom sealant

In this instance, we wanted to see what would happen if we sprayed bleach on some mold growth in a bathroom ceiling.

So, we identified an area with mold growth that was caused by high humidity and a bad exhaust fan.

We began by spraying bleach on the growth then used a sponge to scrub the area.

This was done until the growth was removed and the area was visibly clean. Then, we let the area sit for about a week without fixing the moisture problem.

What do you think happened after five days?

If you guessed that the ceiling was still clean because we applied bleach to the area, you would be wrong. In fact, when we returned to look at the ceiling, this is what we found.

Look at the picture below.

This is what it looked like when it began to regrow.

If you look closely, you can see how the mold appears to regrow in the direction of how the sponge was wiped across the surface of the ceiling.

Pretty much, this is what happens if you fail to fix the moisture problem and just attempt to use bleach to remove mold growth.

How Much Does Mold Removal Cost

Mold spores are a part of nature and float freely in the air we all breathe. Since they are microscopic they can easily find their way into your home, office, or commercial property. At this level trace amounts of mold spores are harmless. Its when those mold spores find a warm, damp, and often porous space that they can germinate toward becoming a potentially harmful colony.

If you have noticed signs of mold in your home or office, it can be hard to identify the severity and spot every source. Furthermore, attempting to remediate a severe mold problem on your own can potentially stir up the colony, sending new mold spores and potentially harmful mycotoxins into the air. You might end up cleaning away one mold colony, only to find that youve helped the spores to spread somewhere else.

Further compounding the problem is the fact that many of the cleaning products available at the consumer level are ineffective for long-term mold remediation. Even bleach lacks the potency to kill the microscopic roots of a mold colony once it embeds itself deep in a porous structure.
