However, adding Murphys Oil Soap allows you to remove several weeks worth of growth that may have accumulated due to disuse. When you have pool items that dont get used for several months out of the year, this solution works best to restore the wood just in time for summer.

How To Clean And Restore Old Teak Furniture

To clean and restore your old teak garden furniture, simply use our Teak Cleaner, which is specially designed to kill mould and mildew spores in teak, as well as brighten the wood, restoring it to its former glory.

Before using our Teak Cleaner, cover the ground under your working area. Eye protection and rubber gloves should be worn. Then you should follow these steps:

Teak wood naturally develops a silvery grey patina with time if left exposed to the weather elements outdoors. While this is an accepted natural process, you can keep it from happening by cleaning the furniture on a regular basis.

How To Clean Your Teak Garden Furniture

Teak is an ideal material for garden furniture due to its resistance to the outdoor elements. In contrary to most types of wooden outdoor furniture, that made from teak requires no protective treatments in the form of paints, varnishes and oiling because teak is naturally resistant to the outdoor extremes. This, however, does not mean teak garden furniture does not require cleaning. Unfortunately, no material is dust- and dirt-proof and teak is no exception.

Routine Cleaning

You do not need any special cleaning agents to keep your teak garden furniture clean and appealing. In most cases, hosing it off with plain water is all that is required to remove the dust and dirt. If plain water, however, does not do the trick, warm soapy water and a non-abrasive cloth or soft sponge does. Frequency of cleaning depends on your climate and the amount of dirt your teak garden furniture is exposed to but washing it once a week or every two weeks is usually enough to keep it clean and look inviting.

Substitute bleach for ammonia.

But do not mix ammonia and bleach together–because if you do, and breathe it…it’ll kill you! Seriously. No joke.

Use one or the other. Never mix both!

And then scrub the teak with the grain, using a hard bristle brush. Then rinse.

What you will notice, after the teak dries, is that the teak will miraculously show you its pristine, natural, just harvested color – without the stains.

Note: depending on how much ammonia you use, the teak grains will rise, giving the teak a somewhat rough texture.

You can then sand the teak with a fine grain sandpaper, or not. Because, eventually the teak will smooth out by itself.

Finally, if you want to apply teak oil to give your teak shimmer and shine, go for it.

Deep cleaning remedy #2:

Use oxalic acid .

But when its condensed into pure crystals its quite potent, and toxic.

In other words, wear gloves when rubbing oxalic acid into stains.

First step: wet the teak and then sprinkle on the oxalic acid.

Second step: scrub the stain with a Scotchbrite pad or a Bronze Wool pad. .

Third step: give the solution a few minutes to soak in.

Then thoroughly rinse the wood and let it dry completely.

Now, if that sounds like too much work, or too intimidating

Try using a household cleaner that contains diluted oxalic acid, like Bar Keepers Friend.

Can You Clean Teak With Vinegar

Yes!Vinegar is one of the most recommended stain-removing agents for teak furniture. As indicated earlier, you can use 1 cup vinegar and a gallon or 4 liters of warm water to create a cleaning solution for your stained teak wood.

The homemade vinegar-water solution is quite effective in removing mold, accumulated dirt, and grime from the furnitures surface. You can use this mixture for routine cleaning and occasional deep cleaning.

Maintaining The Golden Color Of New Teak Furniture

• Step 1. Prepare the area by laying down a tarp.
• Step 2. Prepare the furniture by cleaning it with two tablespoons of mild dish soap and a gallon of water or our Teak Cleaner to remove surface oils and dust. Allow it to fully dry. If your teak feels rough to the touch after cleaning, you can do a light sanding with 220 grit paper to remove any rough fibers or wood particulate. Be sure to sand with the grain to avoid “scratching” the teak.
• Step 3. Choose a sealing product. There are many color and finish options available on the market. We don’t recommend using teak oil . It’s always best to test any sealer on a small, hidden portion of your furniture. We recommend using a water-based sealer like our Golden Sealer. Shake the bottle for a minute to mix. Apply two thin coats with a soft cloth and wipe up any drips as you go. .
• Step 4. Outdoor environments are harsh. Any sealer will weather or wear away with time and use. It will need to be touched up or reapplied periodically . We recommend stripping down the furniture to the natural teak every few years using our Two-Part Cleaner or a similar product before reapplying a sealer. I have a friend who has an armoire given to him by his parents. It is made of teak and is about 45 years old. They got it in china many years ago. My friend had it in storage for a while, and upon getting it out of storage, he noticed it had mold growing on it. He scraped off most of it but says its still in the grain. He wants to be very careful with the finish which is some type of oil finish, but would like to know how to get rid of the mold.
