Removing Mildew From Cushions

To remove mildew from your outdoor cushions, first, determine whether you have fabric or acrylic cushions.

Fabric Cushions: To clean fabric cushions, dilute a 12 cup of bleach into 1 gallon of water. Use a spray bottle to apply the mixture, then clean the mildew off of the cushion with a scrub brush. Once you have removed the mildew, rinse the cushion with water, and leave the cushions out in the sun to dry for the afternoon. For deeper mildew, youll want to repeat the process several times.

If your fabric fails the spot test, never fear. There is a less harsh mixture that you can use. Pour a 12 cup of Lysol into a gallon of hot water and use this solution to scrub your cushion. You can then rinse it off with a mixture of 1 cup lemon juice and 1 cup salt dissolved into a gallon of hot water.

Acrylic Cushions: For acrylic cushions, mix 1 cup bleach and 2 cups of detergent into a gallon of water. It is easiest to apply with a spray bottle. Let is set for about 30 minutes before rinsing with water.

Help Removing Mold/mildew From Pillow

Unless it’s down-filled, you can throw it in the washing machine…normal cycle, detergent and a bit of bleach.

With that said, pillows are cheap. I’d get a new one.

Thanks might as well try to give it a wash if I need to get a new one anyway!

Nope. Bin it and replace it. You don’t know what that colonizing organism is, and why sleep with it next to your face???

If it’s a ‘regular’ pillow you can wash it in hot water. If your washing machine has a sanitizing setting use that. I’ve found that it’s best to have another pillow or small blanket/larger towel in the load so that the machine doesn’t get out of balance.

Don’t overfill the washer as you want it to rinse clean. In my machine which is front loading I only wash two pillows at a time.

You can add a small amount of vinegar to increase the cleaning power of your detergent. How much will depend on the washing machine. Vinegar will increase the amount of suds.

Then dry the heck out of it in the dryer.

I’d toss it. Not worth compromising my health if any unseen mold remains and pillows are cheap.

That sounds good! Let me give this a shot, if the washer does not do the trick.

How To Remove Mold And Mildew From Upholstery

Jack White, vice president of technical services for Rainbow International, explains whats actually going on when you see mold on your comfy couch.

Mold has to have the right conditions to grow on upholstery. First, there must be an organic food source mold cannot grow on synthetic materials but it can grow on the soil embedded in synthetic materials. There must also be moisture. The organic material has to stay wet for a certain period of time for mold to begin to grow.

Given this knowledge, here are Whites recommendations for dealing with mold on upholstery:

  • If your upholstered furniture has water damage and a substantial amount of mold growth, it should be replaced.
  • If there’s only a small mold stain, you can try using a 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution. Blot it on the mold and allow it to work for a minute or so. Rinse solution from the area by alternately dabbing it with a damp cloth or sponge and a dry cotton cloth. This probably will not remove the mold, but it may help lessen the stain.
  • Consult a professional upholstery cleaner if the stain persists or reappears.
  • White also adds that silk, wool, antique or vintage upholstery should be cleaned by a professional.
