How To Remove Mold From Garage Door

Cleaning White Rubber Weather Stripping

How to Replace a Garage Entry Door : Removing Brick Mold on a Garage Entry Door

The dish soap worked perfectly on the garage doors but didnt make a dent at cleaning the weather stripping. Not a problem, I sprayed on some shower cleaner and left it for 5 minutes. When I came back, they were clean!

The weather stripping doesnt look as good as new, but it looks 98% better than it did before.

All that with common household cleaners that I already had on hand. And like an hour of work. And no driving to buy something else just because it has the name Garage Door or House, or Siding, or Roofor any other words that would make me think I needed to spend my time driving and money purchasing.

My garage door weather stripping has some spots near the bottom that would not come off. I think its paint. Or maybe from me dragging something into my shop and rubbing hard against it and marking it upor something. Wes door didnt have them so its definitely something that Ive probably done, perhaps. Good thing I got up the gumption to do this task instead of asking him to do it. He definitely would have noticed and had 20 questions to which I would have no answers. I like to avoid those conversations whenever possible.

I also like to spend my time doing renovations on the inside of my home, not the outside. But this is something that needed to be done and it feels good crossing it off the to-do list!

p.s. Now that its cooling off, its time to check doors and think about replace weather stripping and winterizing windows.

Dont Mix Cleaning Solution And Bleach

A bleach-water mixture can be used for spot-cleaning especially tough stains, but it should never be applied while soap is still on the door or incorporated into your cleaning solution. If you need to apply a bleach solution to a stain, wipe off all cleaning solution in that area of the door first and then apply bleach that has first been diluted in water.

What Are The First Signs Of Mold On Garage Walls

In your war against mold growth on garage walls, you have to be vigilant at all times. You have to inspect your garage walls regularly so that you can spot the first signs of mold growth on your garage walls early on.

Mold spores are in the air, everywhere, all the time.

All they need is to land on the garage wall that will provide them with food and water. They may become visible in a couple of days. Within a week you will have an outbreak.

Since mold grows in dark corners they are difficult to spot. You are likely to smell mold growth, even before you see it. If mold or the mildew are present and thriving in your garage, you will notice the unmistakable musty smell associated with them.

Humidity is a factor in mold growth that can change significantly in your garage due to condensation, water leakage, rain, flooding etc. So you have to do a more thorough inspection of areas that are prone to high moisture and after heavy rains or garage flooding.

Some areas that are more likely to encourage mold growth are

  • Garage floor and drywall joint as ground water outside the garage can seep in and wick into the drywall
  • Garage ceiling and wall joints as the roof may have developed leaks
  • Under air conditioners and utility sinks, around drains & gutter spouts

Keep an eagle eye on these spots.

Your garage door is exposed to the elements on a daily basis rain, sun, wind, dirt and all of these can take a toll, even on the highest-quality door. Over time, the finish on your door can become dull and, in some cases, damaged or eroded. If dirt and grime are left on the door over long periods, it can speed up the erosion of the finish. While wood garage doors can and should be refinished periodically, keeping them clean means you can go longer in between refinishing. For doors made from other materials, you may not be refinishing them on a regular basis, but maintaining the integrity of the doors surface goes a long way in keeping the door in good condition.

How Do You Get Rid Of Mould On A Door

Is mould dangerous? is one of the first questions were often asked during discussions about managing and removing mould from doors. And the answer is that yes, it certainly can be. Most types of mould grow in damp conditions and appear as a collection of black, green or grey spots. Some of this mould is highly toxic, but much of it looks alike so it can be hard to tell exactly which kind of mould you have without an expert diagnosis. But even if your mould is not the highly toxic kind, most moulds will at the very least exacerbate breathing problems and cause respiratory irritation, so its always worth removing from your doors as soon as possible.

If you have a whitish coating rather than the dark spots, you likely have mildew on your door rather than mould. Mildew is another form of fungus that can be similarly bad for your health.

Wet & Forget And Shockwave Mold Treatments

Benzalkonium chloride and quaternary ammonium chloride are from similar chemical groups that disinfect surfaces and kill mold.

Wet & Forget is a benzalkonium chloride , and ShockWave is a quaternary ammonium chloride . These groups of chemicals are similar in nature and have varying abilities to kill different molds.

These chemicals work on wood, concrete and steel. While they do kill drywall mold, they can also kill the drywall during application. This is because BAC and Quat chemical applicators put a massive amount of water on the target. Unpainted drywall can absorb the water and disintegrate.

In any case, you need to dry that water out with a dehumidifier and fan to avoid creating more mold growths.

You always have the option of replacing that moldy drywall.

I have used Wet & Forget It on my home, deck, and ShelterLogic garage. I had a good experience with it in those places. For the attached home garage, though, you have to consider whether you can deeply wet a surface in order to kill the mold. You definitely do not want to add moisture to the garage with mold spores about. Too much water will break down unpainted drywall, so you dont want to use this product there. If you use a water applicator in the garage, have a fan and dehumidifier ready to get the garage dry again.

Popular BAC mold treatments:

  • Wet & Forget Moss, Mold and Mildew Stain Remover
  • Mold Armor Disinfectant and Fungicide

Popular Quat mold treatments:

  • Fiberlock ShockWave

How To Get Rid Of Mold On Plywood Or Osb Wall

How to clean garage doors

A garage wall can sometimes be made from plywood or OSB sheathing. Plywood, OSB, MDF etc. are organic building materials and are also hygroscopic .

If these have been painted or stained, then the paint or the stain will act as a moisture barrier. High humidity, condensation or even occasional flooding will not result in water penetrating the plywood.

Mold growth will likely be on the surface only. You can get rid of the mold on painted or stained plywood, by the same way, that you would use to get rid of mold from a painted wall.

But if the plywood was not painted and there has been some leakage or flooding in the garage, then the plywood would have become moist. The mold which starts off on the surface can grow inwards and take root.

In most cases you will be able to kill it using distilled white vinegar solution, rather than bleach or baking powder solution. If some spots remain, you could lightly sand the area to remove the mold that has penetrated the surface.

Get Rid Of Standing Water

Even if your garage is well-sealed, you can count on water getting into your garage due to wet boots and tires coming through. To prevent mould growth, regularly remove standing water with a mop, squeegee, or sponge.

If pooling is an issue in your garage, you may also consider improving the drainage system in your garage. This may involve installing a drain and adjusting the floor slope.

What Not To Do

Washing a garage door is a relatively simple process, but that doesnt mean you shouldnt be careful. Even the most durable garage doors can be damaged if you use the wrong cleaning solution or an abrasive sponge on the surface. So, as you prepare to clean your garage door, keep these helpful tips in mind:

Keep Your Garage Ventilated

Increasing the circulation of fresh air in your garage will not only help drive out musty smells, but also help regulate the temperature and humidity, making your garage less hospitable to mould spores. If you have a window in your garage, try to keep it open for a couple of hours at a time when the weather is nice. Alternatively, you can keep the garage door open for awhile.

If you dont have windows, or if humidity remains a problem, you may choose to keep a dehumidifier in your garage. This will help eliminate excess moisture from the air. The relative humidity in your garage should be maintained at 60% or less to protect against mould and mildew.

Natural light also helps to prevent mould growth. If you have windows in your garage, keep them uncovered to allow maximum light penetration. Its also important to keep these windows clean. The same goes for any windows on your garage door.

Know Your Mold And Mildew

Mold contamination on Building Surfaces: FAQs about ...

Mold can grow in your home wherever theres an abundance of moisture, especially when its allowed to remain for extended periods of time. Mold usually appears on walls, ceilings and floors of homes where moisture management is not at its best. In particular, basements, shower walls and windowsills are areas where mold commonly likes to live. Mold and mildew, for all intents and purposes, are essentially the same thing mildew is generically used to describe many minor mold problems in the home, such as on shower tile grout. However, some molds can become highly toxic to people if left to prosper. Mold can cause allergic reactions, asthma and other respiratory complications, and is especially a risk for small children, the elderly and those with existing respiratory illnesses or weakened immune systems. Mold can appear in many shapes and colors, none of which accurately determines the actual species of mold. However, it does commonly present itself in various tints of black, white, green or blue, and in many combinations of these and other colors.

Remove Mold From Drywall/painted Walls

Mold can often grow on drywall and painted interior walls, especially in areas where moisture and humidity are a factor, such as kitchens and bathrooms. Walls can also be affected if your roof or exterior walls are infiltrated by water. If the drywall remains wet, mold can begin to grow and penetrate the drywall throughout. When this happens, the drywall must be removed and replaced, as you will not be able to get rid of all mold under these circumstances.

When you clean your door, take a few minutes to inspect it, both inside and out. Think of cleaning as a reminder to check on all the moving parts the photo eye sensors and other parts of your garage door opener, the spring, the tracks and, of course, the surface of the door. Cleaning the exterior of your door also provides a better look at the doors surface. When your door is clean, youre more likely to notice if it has become damaged in some way. Mold On The Concrete Garage Floor

Mold does not grow well on concrete itself, but you may find it on concrete floors for a couple of reasons.

First, when concrete gets wet and then dries, mineral deposits are often left behind. These may look like mold by they really are not. However, mold may begin to grow on these mineral deposits .

Second, people often choose to paint their garage floors because they like the way it looks. Mold grows easily on most types of paint. In addition, it may be harder to see mold growing on a painted floor, depending on the color of paint, so you may not notice the problem until its gotten pretty bad. What Causes Mold To Grow In The Garage

In order to grow, mold needs three things: humidity, darkness and poor air circulation. The way you use a space also contributes to its spread. These are the most common causes of mold in the garage.

  • Bad door seals allow damp weather to seep inside.
  • Wet car tires and undercarriages drip water on the garage floor.
  • Summer heat combined with rainy weather increases humidity.
  • Cardboard and paper items stored in the garage feed mold growth.

Keep The Garage Organised

This is the place where you will keep most of the stuff that you do not use frequently. You need to ensure that this place is organised and get rid of anything that may lead to mold build-up.

Have some shelves where you can store your stuff instead of dumping them on the floor. Some garages are prone to flooding or leaking water challenges.

Storing your stuff in a raised area prevents them from dampness if this happens.

How To Get Rid Of Mold On Drywall

Drywall is basically powdered gypsum held together by two sheets of paper, like a sandwich. The paper is the food for mold and it basically grows on it.

The paper, visible to you, can get wet due to condensation or high humidity in the garage. Mold will start growing on this. If you detect it early, you can use a standard chlorine based mold cleaner or a bleach solution. They work fine for surface mold.

But they can not penetrate. So if the mold is in an advanced stage, then it is likely that the mold has gone deeper. You then need to use undiluted white vinegar. Vinegar has a strong odor, but dont worry. It will dissipate with time

In case of flooding or leakage, water will penetrate into the drywall because of the porosity. Actually even to areas beyond the flood or the leak, because of wicking.

So the paper on the other side would be wet too and mold can grow where you cant see it.

In this case you will need to remove the affected section of the drywall. Bag the cut out piece and dispose. Make sure it goes off in the garbage and does not leave any spores in the garage. Replace the cut out part with a new drywall piece.

If the damage is more extensive, you may have to change the entire drywall. Consider getting in the specialists at this stage. Also consider using a less porous, mold resistant building material.

How To Remove Mold From The Garage Floor

Homeowner tip: How to Remove Garage Mold Safely

Make sure that the white powder on the garage floor is mold and not efflorescence. Wearing goggles and a respirator, use a magnifying glass on the garage floor. Efflorescence is a harmless salt that rises to the surface from under the concrete. You can use a broom to sweep it away. Mold sticks to the floor and does not move under a broom.

Concrete grows mold because it is naturally porous and moist. Material such as minerals and dust fall on concrete, and the materials can get moldy. In this case, a broom might move the moldy material along. If you cannot tell if its mold, assume it is mold and clean it wearing protective gear, including an N-95 or N-100 respirator.

If a carpeted floor mat is moldy, consider throwing it out. Mold penetrates fiber and the infiltration can be hard to remove. You can clean fiber mold with Fiberlock Advanced Peroxide Cleaner.
