Silicone is usually a white color, sometimes called caulking that fills the space between a sink, countertop, or the tub, shower, and the wall. The growth of the black mold often happens on silicone in the shower and throughout the bathroom, as it is a difficult area to keep dry and clean. Clean this area as you see the mold start to form to prevent it from getting out of control.

Removing Mold From Bathroom Ceiling

How you remove mold from your bathroom ceiling depends on the surface. Youll likely need to replace the moldy part if its a porous material like wood, drywall, or popcorn.

Mold in the ceiling is often caused by poor ventilation or water leaks. If you have pipes in the ceiling, consider checking to see if theres a leak. You must also ensure that your bathroom fan is working correctly.

If your ceiling is made of a non-porous material, you can try the following to remove the mold:

1. Prepare the Bathroom

Start by opening a window and turning the fan off. Protect yourself by wearing gloves, goggles, and preferably a mask.

Use a step stool, chair, or ladder to reach the ceiling. If the ceiling is painted, use a scraper to remove the paint from the molded area.

2. Mix a Solution

In a container, add two cups of hot water, a quarter of a cup of vinegar, and two tablespoons of borax. Give it a good mix to dissolve the powder.

3. Apply

Dip a two-sided sponge in the solution and apply it to the area. Use the rough side to scrub the mold away. Have a clean, damp cloth at hand to rinse every once in a while.

Repeat the process until the mold is gone. You may need to replace the solution if it becomes dirty.

4. Reapply

When the area is clean and mold-free, spray the solution onto the entire area. Allow the borax and vinegar to dry on the ceiling this will help to kill any leftover mold and spores.

5. Repair the Ceiling

What Is Black Mould And Why Does It Form

Mould is a fungus that grows in damp, warm conditions, such as a bathroom, where there is very little airflow. It can start as mildew, a white form of fungus found on a flat surface.

The growth of black mould on bathroom walls and ceilings is due to excess moisture, which may start with condensation building up over time following a shower or bath. The warm, moist air meets a cold surface and clings to it, like windows.

Mould can build-up for many reasons, apart from a lack of ventilation in your bathroom these include leaking pipes, poor insulation or if condensation has not been removed following a shower.

How Can I Identify Mould In My Bathroom

How to Remove Black Mold from Bathtub

There are various ways of identifying mould in your bathroom. Remember, mould forms from the inside out, so if you can see it, the issue may already be severe and will need fixing as soon as possible. Below are tell-tale signs of mould forming in your bathroom:

  • Smell: A constant damp smell, even when your bathroom looks completely dry and clean, is a sign of mould forming. This can be down a hidden leak in a pipe or a build-up of moisture.
  • Dark Appearance: If your wall or tiles look brown and muddy with a damp and slimy looking appearance, this could be black mould growing.
  • Damaged Walls: Crumbling plaster, off-coloured walls, blistered paint or cracked tiles, or warped walls may mean that moisture has got into the walls, causing mould to grow.
  • Unstable Floors: If your flooring feels soft and spongy – perhaps under tiling – you may have moisture underneath, result in mould forming.

How To Clean Mould Off Bathroom Sealant

For sealant, similar to grout, you may need to replace it entirely. If the mould is on or around your tiles, you should be able to scrub or brush it away with your cleaning solution, potentially bleach-based or borax for its strength.

Like removing grout, use a flat-headed screwdriver to lift it away and apply new sealant. Remember to clean the tiles, grout and sealant regularly.

When using bleach, remember that it is a toxic substance that can cause eye, lung and skin irritation. Take great care and make sure you have enough ventilation to remove fumes.

A handy trick is to roll a few pieces of toilet paper into a sausage shape, pour the bleach onto the affected sealant and let it soak in. Place the toilet paper on top, allowing it to absorb the bleach. Leave it for 12 hours and then remove it. You may need to repeat it. Watch the video below for an example.

How To Remove Mold And Disinfect The Area

Once youve identified bathtub mold, removing it is a simple step-by-step process.Step 1: The first step is to thoroughly dry the mold in your bathtub which means wiping the surface of your tub and sealing off your bathroom to any excess moisture. Different types of mold respond to different cleaning agents but if you have black mold in your bathtub, the most common infestation, a simple bleach solution should suffice.

Step 2: Mix bleach and water together to form a solution then while wearing rubber gloves and goggles, thoroughly wipe the surface of your bathtub to kill all remaining mold. Its imperative never to mix bleach and ammonia as this can be hazardous.

Step 3: After scrubbing the bathtub clean with a plastic brush and bleach, use pure water to rinse down the area to ensure all mold and cleaning agents are removed from the surface. If cleaned properly, a visual inspection of the area should determine the mold has been removed.

Step 4: The final step of your bathtub mold removal is to then thoroughly dry the bathtub then make sure no moisture re-enters the room for at least 24-hours. The combination of decreased moisture and bleach should thoroughly remove the mold in your bathtub as well as disinfect your bathtub area.

Safety Precautions For Removing Mold From Bathroom Walls

Mold contains harmful toxins. For maximum health and safety, we recommend:

  • Wearing old clothes you can throw away or deeply wash afterward
  • Wearing an N-95 respirator, as well as gloves and eye goggles
  • Wrap and tape moldy carpeting in plastic, then double bag it before throwing it away
  • Use an old fan as a ventilator while youâre working. You will need to throw this fan out once youâre done to avoid circulating mold spores
  • Moisten the mold with a sprayer before removing, as this helps control airborne spores
  • Switch off HVAC systems and furnaces, and be sure to cover their ducts before mold removal

Do You Need To Use Protective Equipment When Cleaning

When using powerful cleaning products, you should always use the right protective gear to prevent potential accidents.

When working with vinegar or bicarbonate of soda, youre safe without any protective equipment but with any bleach mixture, you should wear gloves and protective eyewear at the minimum.

With ammonia, you should also wear a respirator and if you dont have one, its inadvisable to continue with that product.

Don’t Miss: How To Detect Mold In Your Home

What Didnt Remove Mold

When we first moved to our current house, I did a little research and experimented with a number of methods touted to remove mold from shower caulk. Im sure there are even more techniques than the ones listed below, but heres what did not work for me:

  • Saturating the affected area with straight ammonia. This may be incredibly effective, but personally, I detest the smell too much to even try. And since I often use bleach when cleaning I figured it was better just to stay away from this one completely since combining bleach and ammonia produces toxic gas.
  • Spraying with vinegar. This method proved completely worthless for my situation, although I believe it has some merit as a mold preventative. I do love vinegar for glass cleaning though! Take a look at this DIY cleaner I use.
  • Making a baking soda paste with water. I found this only minimally effective on tough mold. Baking soda is a great natural cleaner, though, and the gentle abrasiveness was good for cleaning the tile and some mildewy spots.
  • Combining baking soda and vinegar. Lets talk about this for a minute because I see this combination recommended all the time online. Baking soda and vinegar cancel each other out. This is just basic chemistry, yall. Combining baking soda and vinegar produces carbon dioxide and salty water .

How to Get Rid of Black Mold in Your Shower Caulking

You might think finding black mold in the bathroom is confined to the grout and caulk. Unfortunately, black mold can also be found in the jets and drain of your porcelain or other types of bathtubs. When using a cleaning product, you need to pay special attention to these areas. Spray the cleaner directly on spot and scrub with a soft brush. Be sure to rinse and wipe away all the grime before using the jets. You also need to inspect all areas of tile. If your toilet is close to the tub, its sometimes hard to see mold growing in the corners.

    Is Shower Mold Toxic

Due to the way bathrooms and showers are constructed today, the black mold you see in your shower is less likely to be the really hazardous type of mold. This is because your shower areas and surfaces dont have cellulose which is required for most of the really hazardous types of mold to grow.

That isnot to say that one of the more toxic molds cant ever grow in your shower. Theycan. If you have a bigger issue in your bathroom or home and THOSE spores haveinfiltrated your shower then your shower can become a breeding ground for somereally bad mold. But regular ol mold in the shower usually more allergenicthan anything.

Removing The Mold From The Ceiling

Depending on the severity and the location of the mold, you may need to set one hour or two aside to complete the job. Hereâs how to clean mold from your bathroom:

  • Once you have selected your cleaner, close doors leading to the rest of the house.
  • Put on gloves, goggles, and a face mask. While this may seem excessive, black mold, known as Stachybotrys, can be harmful to your health, causing flu-like symptoms like diarrhea, headaches, memory loss, and respiratory damage.
  • Scrape away paint in the moldy area to expose fungus growing beneath the surface.
  • Apply your chosen cleaner. Make sure you scrub the cleaner into the surface, regularly rinsing your brush or scourer.
  • Dry the area thoroughly when finished. Leaving a wet surface will just encourage more mold to grow.
  • Repaint if necessary

Black Mold In The Shower Method And Product : Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Another product you can try is a regular toiler bowl cleaner. I have had great success using that as well. Use it the exact same way as method 2, in conjunction with a paper towel.

But instead of soaking it, just pour the toiler bowl cleaner right on the spot, and then add the paper towel to kind of keep it in place.

There you go, three methods and products that you can try to clean that black mold in the shower or bathroom or even kitchen tile.

    Happy cleaning!

NOTE: For extremely tough moldy spots you may need to use a combination of all three of these methods and products. Start with the cheaper methods first, like bleach and toilet bowl cleaner. Again the gel works amazingly on grout on tiled walls.

How Do You Remove Mold From Shower Caulking

How to Prevent (and Treat) Mold and Mildew in Your Bathroom

Depending on how widespread your mold infestation is, theres a fairy simple remedy to eradicating the problem.

Step #1 Gather suppliesYoull need bleach, a mask, gloves, toilet paper and vinegar for this process.

Step 2: Start by first venting the area by opening up a nearby window and put on a mask and gloves. Then you want to take bleach and pour it directly onto the mold on the caulk.

Next take toilet paper, or cotton balls depending on how large the area of mold is, and place directly on the caulk. If youre using toilet paper, you want to roll up the toilet paper into a thin snake basically and set it on the caulk. Using toilet paper or cotton balls keeps the bleach where it needs to be and wont allow it to evaporate.

Step 3: let this sit for 12 hours or overnight. Since bleach is so strong, Id do this first thing in the morning, that way you can allow the windows to stay open all day, ventilating the space.

Step 4: Remove the toilet paper or cotton balls. You should find that the mold has vanished.

If you only had a minor mold problem to begin with, you can stop here. However, if your mold issue was fairly large, continue on to the next steps.

Put vinegar in a spray bottle and spray area affected with mold.

Let sit for a couple of hours. Then rinse with warm water.

If caulk doesnt come off easily, apply caulk remover to allow caulk to loosen from tub and tiles. Use a utility knife to remove the caulk once its softened.
