How To Make Resin Molds At Home

There are so many sizes and types of molds you can choose from to suit your project. But, if you want to get more creative, you can make your own molds right at home. Before starting, you need to ensure you have all the necessary materials. These include:

• Casting resin
• The item that you want to replicate
• Razor blade

• Mix equal amounts of both putties until the two colors are thoroughly combined.
• Carefully form the putty around the item to be transformed into a mold.
• To obtain total hardness, let it cure for 24 hours.

Tip: You can also heat-cure the mold in an oven at 350-degree F for a half hour.

Now that you know everything about molds and how to make them, its time to get a little information about the basic types of resins.

Using Hdpe To Create A Casting Mold

This is a great options for both small and large castings! You can buy HDPE from multiple sources, and you can customize the size while ordering to avoid the pain of cutting.

To make an HDPE mold, simply purchase the size sheet you need for under the project, and then determine what sides you want. If you are planning on screwing this mold together, you want to make sure you purchase thick enough sides to be able to put screws into it. What I like to do is to use clamps on all sides of my molds this allows me to re-use the pieces more times.

What are the advantages of an HDPE casting mold? HDPE is super durable, a lot of cutting boards and similar items are made out of this. This means that you dont have to worry about breaking. Another great aspect is perfect smoothness and straightness you decide the size so no cutting and sanding. What about the disadvantages? Honestly the biggest one is price. It is a little more expensive than wood and table. This also plays a role if you need to screw it together rather than buying clamps. Screwing into HDPE wont usually be as forgiving or fixable as wood.

How To Waterproof The Epoxy Resin Casting

So, how do we waterproof an epoxy resin casting? First, using clamps or double checking your screws can prevent this. If youre doing the sheathing tape on wood method, make sure to just slightly go past the edges where the casting mold comes together. If all else fails use hot glue. Thats right. A simple cheap craft hot glue gun around the inner edges of the mold can water-seal and prevent that incredibly easily .

Everything You Need To Know About Casting Resin Molds

Casting resin molds are used for making a specific mold of an object youd like to replicate or display. Resin is then poured into the mold in order to replicate the molds exact shape. This then makes a 3D object you can display wherever you choose.

Casting molds usually require a certain type of epoxy, more specifically, casting resin. This is also known as deep pour resin. This type of resin allows for thicker pours as it has a slower curing process.

Table top and coating epoxies, on the other hand, can be used for molds as well. Just keep in mind it will likely require multiple pours as usually they only allow up to 1/4 inch thickness per application. More on that here.

You can use casting molds to make just about anything! Many people make a mold to fill the resin and then submerge meaningful objects into the resin in order to preserve and display them. You can also make a replica of an object and spray paint it or add dye to make a beautifully artistic piece. Silicone Mold Making: With And Without A Template

There are two ways on how to make resin moldseither with or without a template. In both methods, youll use a blank to determine the empty spaces of your mold.

A template is a kind of frame that contains silicone to prevent it from overflowing when you pour it. Youll place your blank in the template frame and then pour the silicone over it. After the silicone hardens, you can simply remove the mold from the frame. A template is helpful if youre creating duplicate molds to ensure each one is the same size and shape.

You can also create a mold without a template.

In this method, you place the silicone in a mixture of water and detergent so it remains pliable. Then, you take the silicone and wrap it around the blank, ensuring you sufficiently cover all areas. Depending on what shape you are trying to achieve, you can either leave an opening so you can remove the object later, or you can cut the mold after it hardens.

How Long Does It Take To Cure After Casting Epoxy Resin

This will depend on the type of epoxy resin and hardener you got. As a general rule of thumb, it will take no less than 24 hours. I believe waiting for most large projects at least 5-7 days to be the safest and surest way that you wont run into any issues while curing. By 7 days, your epoxy resin will be completely hardened and ready to sand, cut, etc

Slip Your Resin Jewelry Out Of Their Silicone Molds

For perfect-looking jewelry, your timing is key here. You dont want to remove your resin creations too early or theyll become warped. Dont touch the molds for at least 24 hours after making them. Some resin may be set by then, but typically the longer you leave it, the harder it will get. If you leave them for too long, say a week or so, it may be hard to do the next step, which turns these little pieces into wearable jewelry.

Test one piece to see if its hard enough, and if it feels firm and not flexible, its time to take them out of the molds. For flat molds, it should be simple enough to pop the resin out. But for the long, skinny molds, sometimes it can be hard to extract the resin. The trick I use is to squirt some baby oil or vitamin E oil into the sides of the mold, wiggling it down into the mold as I do it to loosen the resin. It takes some patience, but you dont want to risk ripping the mold or breaking your jewelry. Once its well lubricated, itll slide out easily.

Silicone Mold Putty Vs Liquid Silicone

There are two ways to create DIY Resin Molds that well outline here using silicone putty and liquid silicone. Silicone is used for epoxy resin molds as the polymer doesnt stick to it. There are, of course, pros and cons to both methods. Both materials, however, involve making a negative mold of an object to then fill in with epoxy resin to create the finished piece desired. What Is The Best Epoxy Resin For Silicone Molds

When working with epoxy resin, the resin and a corresponding hardener are the basic requirements. Depending on which project you want to devote yourself to, other materials such as different color pigments can be added. Polished silicone molds are also often needed to provide a glossier finish to your finish product.

There are practically no limits to creativity when it comes to shaping: Cubes, balls, pyramids, stars, hearts, flowers, coasters, and all kinds of figures. Anything is possible and can be filled with epoxy resin to create beautiful works of art or gifts.

INCREDIBLE SOLUTIONS Pourable Plastic Clear Casting Resin

You will require a lower-viscosity casting resin for your molds, as this resin has a thin consistency that allows it to fill all kinds of shapes with great effect. This resin has been formulated specifically for the purpose of pouring into a cast, and can be poured in layers of up to 2 inches thick.

This resin will cure crystal-clear unless a color is added. This particular resin is especially compatible with pigmented mica powders. You can mix your resin liquid and hardener according to a 2:1 ratio.

Different Types Of Resin Molds

Instructions for making a mold with EasyMold Silicone Putty:

Preparing the surface

Since the surface of these wood buttons are rough and porous, we coated them with a sealer. Using a paintbrush, apply a coat of liquid glue over the surface of the wood button.

If the glue settles at the top of the buttonhole, poke it with a toothpick.

Take time ensuring all crevices are coated and then when the glue is dry, turn buttons over and seal the other side. Allow glue to dry fully before proceeding with the silicone putty.

Creating the Mold

EasyMold Silicone Putty has 3 minutes of working time at regular room temperature, which means you need to work quickly. Read the instructions on the packaging prior to starting any resin project.

Mix only enough to make one mold at a time. Measure equal sized amounts of components A & B.

For these 3 long driftwood buttons, my components were each about two tablespoons each.

Quickly knead together the components until it is a uniform color, free of any swirls. This process takes about a minute.

Roll the kneaded components into a ball and then flatten so you have enough to wrap fully around the sides of the driftwood button.

Press putty firmly around the button.

Leave the button inside the mold for about 25 minutes while it cures. Remove the button and the mold is ready to be used!

Cut And Assemble The Form

When I make forms, I like to have two pieces of the material of my choice available- one that I can cut from and one that I will use as the base. You will want to cut the sides to be higher than the thickness of the table pour . Most tables are poured between 1.5 3. This means if you do a 4 side, you will not have to worry about the height of the walls for most pours you will complete while using this mold.

After you have cut the form, you will begin the assembly process. Place the walls of the mold on top of the base . Placing the walls on top will help mitigate leaking. It is less likely that epoxy will slip through a sealed form if it does not also have extra gravity playing a role. This will also help the base stay level.

To ensure that the form is sturdy and secured, I usually screw the walls in from underneath the base, making sure the screw heads have a divot to go into . This also helps prevent any slipping later on in the project.

Luckily, epoxy resin is an excellent choice for something as exacting as 3-D letters because its self-leveling and fits into every corner of a mold without needing to be coaxed. Letters and numbers come out smooth, shiny, and free from gaps.

What Material Is Best For Resin Molds

Polyurethane and Polyester Resins As mentioned in the previous section, silicone rubbers are generally the best option for casting these materials. Upwards of one hundred parts can be cast in these molds. If you only require 10-20 cast parts, then you might opt to use less-expensive polyurethane mold rubber.

Help My Resin Jewelry Has Bubbles And Blemishes

If you notice bubbles or blemishes in your cured resin jewelry, its too late to fix it. Sorry! Make sure you pop all bubbles that emerge in your resin for about 10 or so minutes after pouring it. This is normalits just air escaping. As for blemishes, be extra careful that your hands and workspace are super clean. Turn off any fans.

How To Make Resin Molds Some Considerations Before You Start

Before you start casting the mold, you should think about your project. For example, the choice of the right silicone mass depends on the nature of the blank. The following considerations should be made in advance:

• What is the surface of the blank like? Is it very smooth or does it have grooves, edges or ornaments? This is important in order to decide on the optimum hardness of the silicone. If the surface of the blank is irregular, you should use a soft Sillkon so that the resin casting can be removed from the mold later.
