This time, add 3/16 of an inch to the wall length, so your crown will be slightly longer than the wall. This will squeeze the corners to give your crown a better fit. Total pro tip. To cut these pieces of crown, turn your crown upside down on the miter saw and seat it on your miter saw diagonally, like itll sit on the wall. Now cut it at a 45-degree angle.

Cut Crown Molding Templates

Ive included a close up of each crown molding template. Use the crown molding you plan on installing in your home to create your templates because they not only make determining your cuts easier, they also come in handy when you are installing your crown.

Remember that your saw is set to bevel left at 33.9 degrees and the molding lays flat for all these cuts.

*The bevel is the vertical tilt.

The moulding shown here is a historical moulding design that you will find in many older homes and in this feature we show you how to make your own moulding, in a specific design, or to your own design specification to make crown moulding, a dado or chair rail, picture rails, or to create your own wood skirtings – and you can make all these using common router bits you will be able to buy at any Builders Warehouse or tool and accessory supplier.

Using this method you can replicate moulding or trim you already have in your home, or you can use this method to build up mouldings to fit in your home or to add to your furniture – in the exact design that you want.

This method lets you draw almost any design on a piece of paper and make it up without having to buy additional extra router bits. The bits you would use to create the profile are bits you may already have in your router bit set, and it’s just the size that changes. If you don’t already have these bits, it’s definitely worth investing in a set, as you can use these bits for all types of moulding profiles.

As an example and to create this particular moulding design we would set out the steps as follows:

1. The bottom part of the moulding would be cut with a core box bit.

2. The next shape is cut with a bullnose router bit.

3. Moving on you would use a larger core box bit for the large cover.

4. Above the cove is a ogee or roundover bit.

5. As you reach the top use another core box bit.

Crown Moulding Scarf Joint

Scarf joints are used to connect two pieces of crown moulding when the wall is longer than a single piece of the trim. Two pieces are cut at opposing 45-degree angles and overlap to create a splice.

• Swing the blade of the miter saw 45 degrees to the left.
• Place the first piece of moulding upside down on the saw with the scrap end to the right.
• Brace the flat top of the moulding on the base of the saw and the flat bottom of the moulding against the saws fence.
• Make a cut near the end of the moulding.
• To complete the splice, turn the blade 45 degrees to the right and place the second section of moulding upside down on the saw with the scrap to the left.
• Brace the moulding as you did before and make a cut near the end of the moulding.

Cut Outside Corner Miters

• Miter outside corners with the molding upside down.
• Cut the piece about 1/16-inch beyond the length mark and then shave off a bit if the piece is too long.

• Check the length at outside corners using a test scrap.
• When the length is right on, set the piece aside.
• Then cope, miter and test-fit the other outside corner piece.

Tips For Installing Crown Molding

• One alternative to miter cutting crown molding is coping. Because crown molding swells and contracts with the seasons, coped joints do not open up as much as mitered joints do.
• If you have an entire house of crown molding ahead of you, purchase a crown molding support: a brace that firmly holds the trim up against the ceiling.
• Purchase the longest possible crown molding, as this will help you span entire walls without patching together two pieces with scarf joints.

Install The Crown On Two Short Walls

Just nail that bad boy up right in the center with a nail gun or whatev. Nail it right in the middle and walk away because who are you to worry about a little sagging at this point? Youre a hardcore crown molding installer. Youre not fazed. Actually leaving the outsides loose will allow you to adjust them later. For crown to look right, it has to fit the wall and ceiling correctly. You dont want it to be too far from the ceiling or have a weird angle, so leaving the ends loose will give you some room to rotate these pieces so it looks right.

Square Cut Crown Moulding

Square cuts are the simplest and are used to create a butt joint, where the cut end of the moulding fits flush in a corner. Here is how to cut the types of moulding that rest true against a wall.

• Measure the distance from corner to corner on the first wall. Transfer the measurement to moulding.
• With the miter saw set to 0 degrees, make a straight cut to create the butt joint where the end of the moulding will be flush against the wall in the corner. Its this butt joint that a piece of coped moulding will fit against.
• This simple cut is to be used in between crown moulding corner blocks, as described below.

However, with the advancement of building techniques, its usage was reduced to only decorative purposes. Crown moldings have evolved from simple wood bars to elegant and fancy designs.

Crown moldings are usually made of plaster, wood, and composite materials such as PVC, polyurethane foam, extruded polystyrene, and vinyl. The cost, benefits, durability, and installation process for each material are different.

When building or renovating a home, you will need crown molding in large amounts, and you cannot make so much crown molding on a table saw. You can use a table saw, or miter saw to cut crown molding. So what to do when you need crown molding for cupboards in your workshop or your garage? Can you use a table saw to make crown molding? Yes. You can.

Large Router Bit Set = Very Good Value For $$$

Matching the existing pattern… If you are trying to match an existing pattern, you must first understand that it may have been made on a large machine that could have used as many as 5 or 6 different Bits in single pass process that produced what you are seeing.

If possible take a piece of the molding that you want to duplicate and go to the Router Bit isle at your local supplier and physically lay each Bit alongside the molding looking for a match.

You may find that one Bit that is “Off the shelf” comes real close… If so write down the name of that bit and check the other brands of Router Bits looking for an exact match. From Company to Company there are copyrights and specific patterns that are owned… But the Next company may have a Bit that is very close to that of a competitor… If you find a bit that is close to what you need it may be that the molding was made by a competitors version of the same bit. There are many Companies that make Router Bits… Freud, Bosch, Ryobi, and Skill to name but a few.

While you are checking… watch for Bits that duplicate one part of the pattern as it may be that you are in for a two or three pass ordeal to make your duplication.
