How To Hang Pictures From Crown Molding

Using And Decorating With Picture Rail

How To Hang Artwork From Picture Molding

Of course, once you have pictures or other with appropriate picture wire or cords, rearranging and swapping out artwork should be as easy as unclipping or unhooking the suspension system from one item and refastening to hardware on the new item. Because artwork should be hung at eye level, you shouldnt have to climb a ladder to accomplish these rearrangements.

A few other decorative points youll want to consider with your picture rail include:

  • Painting picture rail moulding to match your crown moulding and other trim will help it blend in. This matching technique is traditional and gives the most sophisticated look.
  • You can also paint picture rail moulding to match your walls. Especially in more modern homes that may not have ornate crown moulding, matching any trim to your wall color will lend a sleeker overall look that puts focus on the artwork displayed.
  • Just because you install picture rail, it does not mean you must use it. In newer homes constructed with drywall, picture rail isnt necessary to preserve the structural integrity of your walls. Dont feel guilty if you just like the look and dont plan to use it for its functional purpose!

You Bought The Art Now What Tips For Hanging Art In Your Home

Do you have art that’s just sitting around, or, worse, stuffed in a closet because you’re not sure where to put it or how to hang it?

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I believe that art was meant to be shared with others. So grab your art, read my tips below, and let’s get going!

While I firmly believe there is no right way or wrong way to decorate your home, I do think there a lot of right ways to hang and display art.

I spent all four years of college assisting in my school’s art gallery. I had an internship at a custom framing shop. As an adult, I have lived in eight different apartments/ homes. The best way to make a new place start to feel like home is to hang your art on the walls! And I’ve had a lot of experience doing it .

Here are my favorite tips I have learned over the years and rounded up from some of my favorite home decor blogs on how to correctly hang wall art in your home!

FIRST, my personal favorite, most important tip:

Do not hang your art too high! I repeat: do. not. hang. your. art. too. high.

You may be asking, “but, Jen, is there a correct height to hang art?”

Yes, yes there is. And the number one problem I’ve seen over and over is that people hang their art too high!

In the photo below, these 2 pieces are acting as one large piece of art, with the small gap between them hitting at 60″.

Q: How do I measure how high to hang my art on my wall?

You will need a tape measure, a pencil, and your artwork that is ready for hanging.

How Do You Attach Molding

Install the Moulding Locate and lightly mark the wall studs. Measure the distance between two inside corners and cut a piece of moulding to fit between the corners. Continue installing pieces until all the moulding is up. After all the moulding is up, touch up any raw edges with a light coat of finish.

Do They Still Make Picture Rail

This type of molding was once an elegant way of hanging artwork on hard-to-penetrate plaster walls. Popular in New England and Southern townhouses during the Victorian era, picture rails may seem like a quaint throwback, but they can still look fresh today and serve a purpose.

What is the formula for hanging pictures? When hanging something at an average eye level, position its center 57 to 60 inches from the floor. Use the following formula: Divide the height of the frame by two from that number, subtract the distance from the top of the frame to the hanging hardware add this number to 57, 58, 59, or 60.

    How to Hang Crown Molding

    Hello AT,

Im trying to hang pictures on my wall. My ceilings are 10 feet 6 inches. I have 14 inches of ceiling moldings and wall, then 4 inches of crown molding, then its 100 inches to the baseboard and 8 inches of baseboard. I have panel moldings at 10 inches below the crown molding and 10 inches up from the top of the baseboard. At what level should I hang the pictures? I heard someone say 54 inches, but from what? From both floor and ceiling, it looks really low. Is there a rule about where they should hang within the panel moldings? thanks, Alex

Our rule of thumb is to hang all pictures at 57 on center. This is gallery height and roughly the average human eye level.

To do this you measure up 57 from the floor . You want your pictures center whatever size over this point, so measure your picture top to bottom, divide it in half,

subtract whatever distance there is between wire and top of frame and then add that number to your 57. That is where you put the pin in.

As far as panel mouldings go, we would just use these to center pictures left to right. As far as 57 on center looking low, everyone hangs their pictures too high, so it seems odd at first. Dont worry, its correct. MGR

    • Before nailing the molding to the wall, bore two pilot holes through the point of the miter joint. A 4d finish nail chucked into your drill works well here.
    • Then apply glue to the miter joint and fasten each piece of crown with 6d or 8d finish nails top and bottom.
    • At the corner joint, tap 4d finish nails through the pilot holes.
    • Set all the nails.

While its typically found in old houses with plaster walls, it can be a fun way to dress up plain drywall and give it a fancy old-world feel for very little money. I recommend installing by nailing to every stud with a 2 1/2 15 ga. nail if you plan to hang anything of significance. 18 ga. brad nails, no matter how long, just wont have the holding power you need for this hard working molding.

    More On Corners And Copes

Outside corners The joint at an outside corner is formed by two simple miter cuts, but making them fit takes several steps. Don’t rush the processoutside crown molding corners are usually prominent, and so are mistakes. If the crown molding will have a varnish finish, select two pieces with similar grain patterns.

Double copes If your room doesn’t have any outside crown molding corners or require scarf joints, you’ll finish the job with a piece that’s coped on both ends. This isn’t as tough as you might think. The key is to start with a piece that’s mitered to the right length. Miter both ends and hold the piece in place to check the fit. Then cope the ends as usual.

Scarf joints On a wall that’s too long for a single piece of molding, you’ll have to ‘scarf’ pieces together. The angled cuts of a scarf joint are less visible than square cuts. If you plan on a varnish finish, select pieces that have similar color and grain patterns. Cut and install the longer piece first so the shorter piece can overlap it at the joint. Glue the joint.

Odd-angle corners Coped joints only work in square crown molding corners. If you have nonsquare inside cornerssuch as 45-degree corners in a window bayyou have to miter them. Treat odd angle outside corners just like square outside corners.

    Where We Went Wrong

While we technically were correct in our method of hanging the picture frame boxes, we made a few mistakes Ill never make again.

I realized our first mistake as soon as I started painting.

Lets just say that my first instinct to paint the walls before hanging the picture frame moulding was correct.

Any time the moulding is more than 1/4-inch thick, always, always, always paint the wall first!

Otherwise, you need to cut in with a brush around every. single. piece. of. moulding.

Which wouldnt have been as bad if I didnt need three coats of paint to completely cover up that blue

I soon noticed another mistake we made in planning the spacing of the boxes.

You see, we have crown and neck moulding throughout the lower level of our house.

The neck moulding begins four inches below the crown, so I decided we should use the same spacing for all the boxes.

The top edge is four inches below the ceiling.

Theres four inches from the wall to the edge.

    The space between the boxes?

    Four inches.

Wanna guess the distance from the baseboard to the bottom box?

If you guessed four inches, you get a gold star!

    But.

Guess how much space you need for our mini paint roller to fit between the trim

That would be four and a half inches.

    Doh!

Which means I had to use a brush to paint all the wall spaces on the outside edges of the boxes.

Okay, so thats not a huge mistake, but if wed thought to check the spacing with the paint roller the painting wouldve been so much faster!

Kari Annes dining room looks like it is out of the pages of a magazine.

Although her molding on her windows is similar to mine. Its not exactly the same. My molding is way far away from the ceiling and the molding sticks out from the wall at least 4 inches. Theres almost like a shelf type quality to it. Take a look These are all of the moldings in my living room. I think in this room I will hang the curtain rods just like Kari Anne did, very close to the ceiling. Each curtain can drape between the windows.
