How To Remove Mildew Smell From Towels And Clothes
by Jessica
Last month, our hot water heater had a major leak…what a mess! We grabbed every towel in our home to try and mop up the water and keep it from getting on our carpet. Well, one of those towels got left behind, and I found it a few days ago…it smelled sooo bad! I had noticed a mildew smell in our laundry room, and finally found the stinky towel wedged behind our washing machine. I threw it in the washer with my laundry detergent and washed on hot, but it still smelled like mildew. I decided to try an old trick that I had read about in one of my magazines that helped get rid of the mildew smell. Well my friends, this works like a charm! Let me show you how to remove mildew smell from towels and clothes too!
Here is the culprit…stinky mildew towel…yuck!
All you need is 1 cup of distilled white vinegar.
Turn your washer temperature to high, and start your wash. DO NOT ADD LAUNDRY DETERGENT! Simply pour your cup of vinegar into the wash and let it work its magic!
Put your towel in your dryer with a dryer sheet or dryer balls, and they should come out smelling fresh and new! If they do not smell better and have extreme mildew smell, throw back into the washer and instead of vinegar, add one cup of baking soda to the wash…still no detergent. This should completely rid your towel of the musty mildew smell!
Why Do Towels Get Mold And Mildew
Would you like to make a guess?Hopefully this is a no-brainer. As you recall, mold and mildew love moistureand towels provide plenty of that!
Most of us shower or take a bath and then hang our towel to dry in the bathroom. Some of us may even make the mistake of throwing the wet towel into the laundry basket or onto the floor.
When your wet towel hangs around in the bathroom not only does it increase the moisture in the air causing the humidity to rise but it simply doesnt allow the towel to dry in a reasonable amount of time. You have taken a wet towel, added moisture, and then given it an impossible task of drying quickly. Enter mildew.
Even worse is when the towel ends upin ball on the floor or in a laundry basket. You just completely stripped it ofits ability to dry.
If your towel is left damp for more than 12 hours it runs the risk of developing that mildew smell. Leave it for 24 hours? You might get actual mold on the towel.

How Do You Get The Mildew Smell Out Of Towels With Vinegar
Another common hack for cleaning towels is using vinegar. While this option may not seem as appealing as using baking soda, it can be rather useful if youve got really stubborn, smelly towels.
To use this towel cleaning hack, simply do the same as you would with the baking soda. Just add one cup of white vinegar to a load and wash your towels with no detergent or bleach in warm or hot water. If you notice that your towels still have a smell after using this hack, you can combine both hacks by first washing your stinky towels with vinegar, then running another load with the baking soda.
Extra Tip: If youve found that even after youve tried these tricks that youre still noticing a bit of an odor, you can also add a few drops of your favorite freshening essential oil to either of these hacks. To do this, just add three to five drops of essential oil into your load, and your towels should come out smelling fresher than ever. Some of our favorites to use are lemon and tea tree essential oil, which both have an uplifting and refreshing scent. The compounds in both of these oils also help in removing odor for good!
