Mould Removal With Vinegar
Many choose vinegar over bleach or other chemicals because it is 100% natural and safe. It does not emit any dangerous fumes into your home like most chemicals do. Like bleach, it can also kill and prevent future mould growth, but only if applied regularly to areas prone to mould around your home. When cleaning with vinegar, gather these items and follow the steps:
- Ladder
- Scrubbing brush
- Plain water and clean cloths
Step One: Pour the vinegar into the dry spray bottle and spray a good amount on to the mould-infested areas. Allow it to sit for an hour before you move on to the next step.
Step Two: Using a clean cloth soaked in plain water, wipe away the mould from the walls and ceilings. You can also use a scrubbing brush with firm bristles as it is more effective in removing hardened fungus and stains.
Step Three: Use a dry, absorbent cloth to soak up moisture by dabbing or pressing against the cleaned areas. Keep the windows open to dry the area quicker and allow the vinegar smell to go out.
Step Four: To help prevent mould growth using vinegar, ceiling corners and other areas where mould is likely to grow should be sprayed once or twice a week using the same vinegar in the bottle.
Clean The Entire Ceiling
Now that you have cleaned the hard stain areas, you can now clean the entire ceiling. You can use the same cleaning mixture you just made a spray the entire popcorn ceiling or you can make some more in a large cleaning container. Pour 5 tablespoon dawn dish soap in the bucket, half cup bleach, half cup vinegar, and then add warm water.
Dip the microfiber cleaning attachment of the mop in the water and wipe down the entire ceiling until you are satisfied that it is clean and dust and mold have been removed. After the ceiling has dried, you might have a few spots that need paint touch-up and a little fill-in. You can either leave it or get a small amount of paint and do the touch-up yourself.
If you want to prevent other stains from coming back, you can use oil primer sealant to prevent this from happening again. This cleaning method will remove grease, mildew, smoke stains, and other things.

Tip 9 Cover Up The Mess
Bathroom ceilings are often painted in light colors, so probably white, beige, neutrals, or pastels. So even after youve removed the mold, your bathroom ceiling may still be stained. Double-check to ensure all the mold is gone before you remove the visible evidence. Youll have to sand off the stains, apply chemical treatments, or paint over those unsightly marks.
Painting is the most common option, especially because bathroom ceilings are rarely made of wood. This is why you have to double-check that all the mold is gone. Otherwise, the mold spores will be trapped beneath the paint and may continue to grow, eventually poking through.
Tip 2 Confirm The Cause
There are two main triggers for mold moist air and flowing liquid. In your bathroom, mold is likely to be caused by humidity. The bathroom is often steamy during use. So if multiple household members share a bathroom, its moist for most of the day. You need good air circulation, an effective HVAC system, and maybe some bathroom fans to keep it dry.
Alternatively, the mold on your bathroom ceiling may be caused by a leaky pipe. You can tell the difference because moisture mold resembles speckles of black spray paint splashed on your ceiling. Its mostly concentrated at the edges of the bathroom ceiling. Wet mold looks more like a large spreading stain. Itll be yellow or brown, circular, and centralized around one spot.

What Can You Use To Remove Mould From Ceilings

Spray the entire ceiling, not just the moldy areas, as the beginnings of an area of black mold growth are invisible to the naked eye. Let the undiluted vinegar soak for at least an hour, rinse, and repeat. This will start to remove the stains.
Mould Removal Using Bleach
Bleach is perhaps the best option for the removal of mould. Not only is it a good cleaning agent, but it also kills the mould and bacteria, sanitising the walls and ceilings to prevent mould from returning. Heres what youll need when using bleach to clean your walls and ceilings:
- Gloves
- Ladder
- Mask or scarf
Step One: Put on the gloves, cover your nose and mouth with a mask or scarf and make a solution of one part bleach and ten parts water in your bucket. The gloves serve as protection for your skin as excess contact with bleach can cause skin irritation or burning, while the scarf will prevent you from inhaling the harsh fumes produced by bleach. Its also a good idea to keep all the windows open for maximum ventilation.
Step Two: Dip one end of the cloth into the solution and squeeze it gently to remove some of the water. Get up on your ladder and start wiping away the mould from your walls and ceiling, re-dipping other ends of the cloth until you have removed all the mould. Avoid using too much force to ensure damage-free wall and ceiling cleaning. You can make a fresh solution if the water gets too dirty or simply use more cloths. For any hard to reach places or intricate areas, consider using an old toothbrush to clean.

Tip 4 Verify Leaks Vs Nails
When you notice a yellowish-brown patch on your bathroom ceiling, youll assume its a leaking roof. It may not be. If your bathroom roof has nails or rivets, these bits of metal encourage condensation. This is expected because metal is a good heat conductor. But if this condensed liquid consistently drips onto the same spot on your bathroom ceiling, it may seem like a leak.
Visual inspection is the only way to be sure. Your roof plumber has to access the ceiling and confirm whether its a leaking pipe or merely a dripping metal fastener. The latter is easier to resolve because you can replace the dripping item or insulate it in some way to reduce damage. Use a moisture meter or a touch-test to see whether the whole ceiling is moist or just the nails.

What To Wear To Clean Mold Safely
Before even choosing a cleaning product, you should know what kind of safety equipment to wear to clean a moldy surface.
The basic equipment consists of an N-95 respirator, goggles or eye protection, & protective gloves with long cuffs.15 Long pants, a long sleeved shirt and waterproof boots are important to wear as well.15 Closed toed shoes are a good substitute for boots, especially if you are working on a small area of mold.15
Mold is a respiratory irritant and allergen, so a mask with a N-95 respirator is important, especially if you know you are allergic to mold.
