Hallmarks Of A Healthy Home

The first step in cleaning black mold is to identify the source of moisture that’s feeding it it could be a pipe, roof or foundation leak, or condensation from an appliance. Stop any leaks, and dehumidify any areas affected by mold growth.

Next, seal off the room where the mold is located shut doors tightly and cover vents, doorways and other areas where air can escape with plastic and duct tape. Place an exhaust fan in front of any outdoor-facing windows or doors to vent the space and push spores outside. Note: Be sure to wear a N95 respirator or mold-spore-rated facemask and cover all exposed skin, including hands, when cleaning black mold.

Lightly spray the mold with water to limit the amount of spores that will become airborne. Scrub the mold with a brush, rag or sponge and soapy water. Be sure to scrub all adjacent areas as well, as not all spores will be visible. Finally, thoroughly scrub the area with bleach, a professional mold removal product or vinegar. Note: Never mix cleaning agents as this could create a toxic gas, use only one product at a time.

After cleaning black mold, place all equipment and debris in a heavy-duty trash bag, and, if possible, exit through an outdoor opening rather than the main home area, to prevent distribution of spores inside.

Taking these steps while cleaning black mold should help to eradicate the problem and ensure that the process is safe and effective.

What Happens If You Clean Black Mold? What To Know

When youre cleaning up in the kitchen after a meal, its pretty obvious to see which dishes need to be washed and which do not.

Generally, anything that has been used gets loaded into the sink or dishwasher for cleaning after that one meal, but what about your reusable water bottle?

You know the one you bring to work every day or the one that sits in your gym bag waiting for your next workout how often are you cleaning those?

Reusable water bottles can fall in a grey area in terms of needing to be washed after use. We say to ourselves, its only water, and we use the same bottle for an entire week without thinking to clean it.

Without staining or leftovers, water bottles make the decision to wash them a bit more unclear. Some coloured or patterned water bottles can make it difficult to see what the inside of the bottle looks like, but if you only knew what could be dwelling in there…

The next type of area that might get black mold is in the shower at the base of the tub and the silicone sealant or caulking. It is very common to find black mold in this area, especially if not diligent in cleaning the area.

Again normal bathroom and shower cleaning agents wont do a good job after the fact, but if used before the black mold develops it will keep the area clean.

For this area, the gel didnt work as well, I tried that first. So I went for the cheaper method.

Begin by pouring some bleach in a container, I am just using my old Rubbermaid Tupperware type container. Then make sure to wear gloves, take a sheet of paper towel and fold it lengthwise, then dip it in the bleach completely.

Ring it out a little bit so it is not dripping like crazy.

Apply the bleached-soaked paper towel to the base where the black mold is. Press it in really well and tight. If you have tough hard water or mildew stains on the top of the tub you can try it on there as well. However, it may be prone to removing the finish. I havent run into that problem yet, but it may happen.

Then let it sit for 1 hour to even overnight. Really tough stains will take longer. You can always reapply after as well.

This did a great job. I wound up doing a few applications and let it sit overnight. Just needs another round and it should be perfect.

Dust and debris that accumulate on concrete surfaces become sources of food for mold, thus facilitating their growth. What Causes Black Mold On Concrete

Mold can grow on concrete for a number of reasons. Like other types of mold, black mold grows in areas where the conditions are right for them. Black mold will grow on surfaces with high moisture, which may be due to leaks in windows, roofs, pipes, and water tanks. The spores of black mold are transferred from one place to another through wind, animals, or water sources. If a wet concrete surface is exposed to black mold, the mold will thrive. Black mold reproduces quickly, and a small patch of it can multiply within a short time. This means that your concrete surface could be covered in black mold within a short time.

If the concrete is in a basement, the black mold may be caused by a leak from outside or faulty plumbing. Homes with high humidity also tend to have problems with mould growing on surfaces as well. Outdoor concrete, such as a patio, usually grows mildew when it doesnt dry completely after its been soaked. This is typical of concrete thats well shaded.
