How To Clean Mold Off Carpet With Vinegar

What Is Black Mold

Housecleaning Tips : How to Clean Mold From Carpet

Black mold is a clustered fungal growth that can appear anywhere in your home. This fungus can spread like wildfire and can be highly toxic.

Furthermore, unlike regular mold, black mold tends to have a distinct odor thats hard to miss. The most common types of black mold are Aureobasidium, Nigrospora, Ulocladium, Cladosporium, Alternaria, Pithomyces, Stemphylium, and Dresclera.

Although not all black mold is necessarily toxic, some types can cause severe allergy flare-ups. It goes without saying that allowing it to spread can also cause irreparable structural damage to your home.

Why Does Mold Grow On Carpet

Mold is a fungus that spreads by releasing spores. Mold spores are everywhere, including in your house. To grow and develop into mold, the spores need moisture, which is why you often find mold in damp places like a wet basement or a poorly ventilated bathroom. Mold grows well on carpets because they are great at trapping moisture.

Once a carpet gets wet , moisture gets trapped in the dense fibers and tiny nooks and crannies that make up the weave of the carpet. Most carpets also have a backing that the weave is attached to. If the backing gets wet, or if moisture gets under the backing, the backing can trap the moisture under the carpet. Unless you actively work to dry a wet carpet using fans, a hot air drier or a dehumidifier, a wet carpet will stay wet. And it will not take long for a wet carpet to form mold.

There are many places in our houses where we do not look at the carpet regularly. There might be carpet in a closet or under a piece of heavy furniture that never gets moved. If the carpet in one of these locations gets wet, you might not notice it for quite a while, giving the mold plenty of time to grow and spread.

So How Do I Remove Mold With Vinegar

Using vinegar to clean mold out of carpets isnt a difficult process, but it does take time. There are two ways to go about using a vinegar treatment: with or without baking soda. Vinegar alone is a milder solution with a slightly shorter process, so its more well suited to very small mold and mildew outbreaks. The addition of baking soda is preferred for more severe cases, as the combination of the two products creates a much stronger cleaning solution. Both are safe to use on most types of carpet.

When treating mildew or mold, there are a few tools you should have on hand. You should also take care to wear some personal protection, both from the mold and the acidity of your cleaner. For any vinegar treatment, be sure to use the following:

  • Rubber or latex gloves
  • Trash bags

A shop vac and fan are optional but effective tools as well.

Once youve gathered the necessary equipment, its a good idea to start by testing a small part of the carpet to see how it reacts to a vinegar treatment. Simply choose a discreet section of the carpet and follow your chosen procedure according to the directions. Doing so gives you an idea of how vinegar will affect your carpet whether it may damage the material, alter the color or texture, effectively remove odors or make any other significant changes. If youre comfortable with the results, you can proceed to treat the mold outbreak.

Below Are The Steps To Using The Anti

  • Spray the area of the mold and about 6 inches beyond with the anti-fungal spray and let it sit for about an hour.
  • After one hour, blot it with a disposable rag so you can soak up the excess spray and let it sit for 24 hours. Dont try to dry it yourself, but instead set up the dehumidifier or have the heat turned up in the room so it will dry naturally. Leave the room as it is. Keep pets and children away from the area.
  • Clean a scrub brush that has a handle with warm soapy water so you know there is no mold residue left on there from using it. You dont want mold spores flying around.
  • Once the carpet has dried, repeat step 1. Use a clean rag to blot and let the dehumidifier or heat run for a few more days to ensure the mold is gone.
  • Check the carpet every few weeks to make sure it isnt coming back and again at the one-month mark.
  • Use a steam cleaner- you can use a steam cleaner to clean up the mold as well. The heat from the steam will kill the mold and the bristles on the brush will help loosen it up in the carpet.

Is Bleach Or Vinegar Better To Kill Mold On Carpets

[Guide] How To Remove Mold From Carpet

Both vinegar and bleach are capable of killing mold at the surface, but vinegar is often considered the better agent for the job. Bleach is a harsh chemical, and mold spores are living organisms the mold can actually react to bleach by running from it, delving deeper into porous surfaces for cover. When this happens, the mold spores can continue growing once the bleach is gone. Vinegar, on the other hand, is the natural product of fermentation. Unlike bleach, its much more mild and doesnt register to mold spores as a threat. Therefore, you can use vinegar to effectively kill mold on the surface before it retreats.

How To Remove Mold And Mildew From Upholstery

Jack White, vice president of technical services for Rainbow International, explains whats actually going on when you see mold on your comfy couch.

Mold has to have the right conditions to grow on upholstery. First, there must be an organic food source mold cannot grow on synthetic materials but it can grow on the soil embedded in synthetic materials. There must also be moisture. The organic material has to stay wet for a certain period of time for mold to begin to grow.

Given this knowledge, here are Whites recommendations for dealing with mold on upholstery:

  • If your upholstered furniture has water damage and a substantial amount of mold growth, it should be replaced.
  • If there’s only a small mold stain, you can try using a 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution. Blot it on the mold and allow it to work for a minute or so. Rinse solution from the area by alternately dabbing it with a damp cloth or sponge and a dry cotton cloth. This probably will not remove the mold, but it may help lessen the stain.
  • Consult a professional upholstery cleaner if the stain persists or reappears.
  • White also adds that silk, wool, antique or vintage upholstery should be cleaned by a professional.

How Problematic Can Mold Be On Your Health

Mold spores are tiny structures naturally found in the air. They are attracted to and rely on moist conditions to thrive. They also have no problem finding their way into your home. They can travel through doors, windows, heating and cooling systems, or even hitch a ride on your clothes or pets. Once they have found a conducive environment, such as your carpet, and have combined with the dust in your home, the perfect condition has been created for mold to grow.

Mold spores will exist in your home air in some capacity. Theyre everywhere and not really harmful at low levels. The key to successfully “managing” mold spores is keeping it from collecting in large numbers. To do this, one must deprive the spores of moisture, cellulose, and time.

When left untreated, mold can impact your health in several ways. It releases allergens and can even release toxic substances, called Mycotoxins. If touched or inhaled, it can result in throat, skin, and eye irritation, as well as coughing and a stuffy nose. In more severe cases, when coupled with a weakened immune system, mold inhalation can even cause respiratory infections or bronchitis, as well as exacerbate symptoms in asthma sufferers.
