Clean Your Vinyl Fence

A power or pressure washer is an ideal tool for cleaning the wood on your deck. However, there are some things you should know to prevent damaging the woods surface while cleaning. The following method requires a detergent for pressure washer.

  • Power washer

If you do not own a power washer, you can easily rent one for the day at many home improvement centers such as Home Depot. Begin by removing all furniture from the deck and sweep away any debris. Add the deck cleaner to the pressure washer per the manufacturers instructions.

Begin at the farthest corner of the deck and start up the washer. Make sure you are using the soap dispensing nozzle, and use a sweeping motion to distribute the cleaner across the deck boards. Many people find that is very labor-intensive, unless your deck is a small one.

Use a scrub brush to work the cleaning solution into moldy areas and corners. This method is also highly effective and the best way to clean black mold outdoors. A pressure washer is not usually practical when getting rid of black mold indoors.

Switch to the widest sprayer nozzle on the washer. Hold the nozzle two feet from the surface and move with the wood grain while using a sweeping motion as you move along the deck.

Finish up by giving the deck a thorough rinsing with clean water. After power washing the entire wood deck, you may want to apply a deck sealer if it hasnt already been done.

What Materials Do You Need

Power washing is often touted as the way to clean a vinyl fence. However, if you dont have a power washer, never fear. You probably already have the only tools you need to clean your vinyl fence. They are:

  • Your garden hose
  • A gallon bucket
  • Soap If you have the ingredients available, you can make your own mixture of powdered laundry detergent, powdered household cleaner, liquid bleach, and water. Otherwise, you can simply purchase a solution formulated for cleaning vinyl.
  • A brush with stiff bristles

Clean Vinyl Fence With A Pressure Washer

A pressure washer is one of the most effective tools you can use to clean your vinyl fence until it is spotless. This device will be your best investment ever as it will clean all the surfaces in half the time needed by the other methods.

You also have the option of choosing between a variety of pressure washers in the market.

Some are gas-powered while others use electricity. There is also a bit of difference between the strengths of different washers.

  • How To Use a Pressure Washer

We suggest using a nozzle type of pressure washer or one with a wand mechanism for water ejection. Start with a small segment of your fence, moving from top to bottom. Hold the nozzle firmly with both hands at least 3 feet from the fence and direct the beam of water perpendicular to it. By bringing the nozzle any closer to it, you risk damaging the rather fragile vinyl fence.

Wet your fence first then add cleaning solutions to the washer and spray your fence with it. Allow the washing solution to sit on your fence for three to four minutes. This time is needed for the dirt and grime to dissolve properly.

Some annoying stains might also need you to scrub them off using a washcloth. A bristled brush also works great for these stains. Change the mode of the pressure washer to rinse mode and wash the fence with clean water, moving from top to bottom.

Keep doing small sections of the fence in the same manner until the whole fence is clean.

Can You Paint Over The Mold

While many painters suggest painting over to hide the molds and green algae, in my opinion, you should NEVER do that because its not a long-term solution.

If you paint your wood fence without removing the molds and moss, the problem will return soon as it has not killed the exact roots of the fungus.

Even worse if you use water-based paints they can serve as a food source for molds and fungus which will keep on developing even more problems in the near future.

Also, it keeps on damaging your cedar fences, and the cost of fixing will increase gradually.

In the long run, you will be bringing down the value of your property just in case you are planning to sell it in the future.
