How to Make Silicone Molds

TAP Silicone RTV’s are used in molding are two-component, room temperature curing elastomers.

TAP Silicone RTV’s silicone elastormers have specific properties which provide users with many advantages

Polycondensation type TAP Silicone RTV System is supplied as base and catalyst, polyaddition type TAP Platinum Silicone is supplied as Part A and Part B.

Each of these types have specific features that means it must be chosen according to the user’s requirements.

Curing starts once the two components are mixed at a rate that depends on the operating conditions. The ideal conditions are 23°C ambient temperature, 50% relative humidity

In order to comply with dimensions it is preferable to use moderate temp. 23 – 30°C and in any case no less than 20°C minimum 30% humidity comply with the recommended catalyst dosage

What Is A Silicone Mold

Mold is a kind of container with a hollow cavity. In most cases, a liquid material can be poured or forced into the container and then hardened , making a solid object in the shape of the mold cavity.

Molds can be made of different materials like tool steel or aluminum. They can also be made from silicones, a group of polymers made up of siloxane that is sometimes used to make products like flexible protective casings, gaskets and contact lenses.

Silicone molds are not as durable as metal ones, but they are affordable, easy to make and highly flexible. This flexibility, coupled with the fact that few materials adhere to silicone, makes it easy to remove molded parts from within the silicone mold.

How To Make Silicone Molds With Template

The negative muld with original mold is perfectly suited for the production of a duplicate. For such a project you need a frame. This ensures that the silicone does not spread uncontrollably after pouring in. If you want to build the frame yourself, orient yourself to the dimensions of the object you want to reproduce. Since silicone is quite expensive, this procedure makes sense in order not to consume unnecessarily much of the material. Your self-made frame has to be absolutely tight. This is the only way to ensure that the silicone does not flow out into possible cracks or underneath edges during pouring. Instead of using a frame, you can also use empty plastic packaging to pour in the resin.

Now you can place the blank in the frame and prepare the silicone. As always, you should follow the manufacturers instructions carefully. Then spread the mixture evenly in the frame and let it harden. The mold can then simply be removed from the frame.

Negative Forms With Original Shape

If you would like to produce a duplicate of an object, the best way to do so is to make a negative mold with an original shape. For this purpose, you usually need a frame so that the silicone, which is later poured in for molding, cannot spread out uncontrollably. You can, but do not necessarily have to build a frame yourself. Empty plastic packaging is also suitable for this.

However, if you do want to do it yourself, you should build the frame according to the dimensions of the object to be duplicated so that you do not waste silicone unnecessarily. This is quite expensive and it is annoying if too much of it is lost. It is essential that the frame is tight so that the silicone cannot escape, or flow into cracks or under the edges. Now put the blank into the frame.

After preparing the silicone, following the manufacturers instructions, pour it into the frame. Make sure that the mass is evenly distributed everywhere. Now the silicone hardens and can be easily removed from the frame.

Removing Your Casting From The Mold

How To Make Silicone Molds For Resin Casting

Now comes the part that is crucial for the success of your project, removing the casting from the mold. You need to be sure that your casting resin has cured properly, and then you can start to demold your item from the mold. Carefully pry the casting free from the mold, making sure you do not damage it in the process, and if you have followed all the above instructions, it should just pop out.

The items are always much easier to remove if you spray some mold-release onto your mold before you start to cast. Now it is time to clean up, you can now dispose of the popsicle stick, gloves, and cup and leave the syringe to soak overnight in a basin of hot soapy water, and clean it the next day.

Mix The Two Parts Of The Liquid Silicone

I decided to make a block mold. But I probably should have chosen a glove mold. More on that in a bit. So I mixxed up my two-part silicone first. If youre doing a block mold, ETI recommends estimates how much silicone youll need using uncooked rice.

To do this, put the item in the container youll use, then add rice. Once the item is sufficiently covered, pour the rice back out and measure how much you needed. Thats how much silicone youll need.

Measure Mix & Pour Silicone Mold Rubber

Based on the new dimensions of the mold box, we determine that approximately 40 lb of TinSil 80-15 Silicone Rubber is needed to make the mold.

As mentioned previously, TinSil 80-15 has a mix ratio of 1A:10B. The components are measured by weight and then mixed thoroughly.

NOTE: Do not attempt to measure products with 1A:10B mix ratios by volume always measure by weight.

Because of the quantity of rubber needed for this project, we mix two separate batches using a turbo mixer.

The rubber is mixed until a uniform color is reached. NOTE: Avoid hitting the sides of the mixing pail with the turbo mixer as this can introduce air into the mixture.

The batches are then mixed by hand with a Poly Paddle. NOTE: It is important to scrape the sides and bottom of the mixing container several times, as this is where unmixed material tends to cling.

The silicone is poured into the lowest point of the mold box and allowed to rise.

The rubber is poured until it reaches at least 1.0 above the highest point on the sculpture.

We allow the rubber to cure at room temperature for ~24 hours. Heat lamps can help speed the cure. NOTE: Demold times vary by product. Check product Technical Bulletins for this information.

Molds negative impressions of parts that can be filled with material are an integral part of manufacturing. In fact, the majority of the worlds plastic parts are made via injection molding.

But while metal injection molds are expensive and can only be made by professionals, flexible silicone molds are highly affordable and can be made at home or in the office. And they have myriad uses, from professional-quality vacuum casting of prototypes to low-volume wax casting for jewelry making, to at-home applications like baking and confectionery making.

This article looks at the relatively simple process of making a silicone mold, discussing its applications and advantages for both professional and personal use, as well as offering tips on silicone mold making at home.

Pour Into Mold Part One

Molding Silicone. LET

Supplies Used: Mixed silicone, prepared mold box and master

Pour silicone into the first half of your mold box.

When pouring, pour slowly into one corner of the mold box and allow the silicone to run to other parts of the mold box as it fills.

Stop when the silicone reaches the top of the first half of your mold box.

Once you have poured your silicone place small keys into the silicone. These will create negative spaces and allow the mold halves to fit together once poured. We will remove them before pouring the second half of our mold.

Prep Your Cheesecake Pan

First things first before we can mix our silicone we need a container to pour into! For this salad plate mold I decided to use a cheesecake pan but well need to seal the bottom so no silicone gets out.

You can use whatever container fits your item but youll need to fit your item inside the container with space on either side for the silicone mixture to flow over and underneath. Youll also want to be able to remove the silicone mold once its cured so be aware that if you use a plastic container you may have to cut the plastic container open to remove your newly formed mold

Which is why I like to use a spring loaded cheesecake pan! It opens easily to let you remove the mold and you can re-use it time, after time, after time.

Simply take your electrical tape and firmly seal any gaps in the bottom of your pan and youre good to go!

Select A Mold Making Method & Mold Rubber

Mold Making Method

For this sculpture, we select the poured block mold method.

Here are the reasons that we are eliminating other methods:

Brush-on Mold: We are concerned that air bubbles may form in the intricate details on the base of the sculpture. Also, brush-on molds tend to have thick and thin spots thin spots end up being weak points in the mold.

Poured Blanket Mold: One of the steps in the poured blanket mold process is to form a layer of clay on top of the original model . This step would most likely deform the clay original.

Based on the shape of the sculpture, we also know that the mold will require a cut in order to remove the original sculpture and subsequent castings.

Mold Rubber

For this particular project, we also know that we want to use a silicone mold rubber because it does not require release agent when casting polyurethane resin. Release agent can be difficult to apply in intricate areas and it may be difficult to remove from the casting. Residual release agent can prevent paint from sticking to castings.

Platinum-Cured vs. Tin-Cured Silicone Rubbers

Polytek silicone falls into two general categories: platinum-cured and tin-cured. Basic comparisons between the two options are in the table below:

Platinum-cured silicone rubbers have advantages compared to tin-cured silicone rubbers , but can suffer from cure inhibition when exposed to certain materials. Sulfur, for instance, is a known inhibitor and is present in some modeling clays.

Construct Mold Box & Prepare Sculpture

To begin, a plywood mold box is constructed at the proper dimensions and then sealed with petroleum jelly.

NOTE: It is a good idea to taper the inside of the mold box so the mold can be removed more easily when the mold box is turned upside-down.

Pol-Ease® 2500 Release Agent is then applied to the clay sculpture.

NOTE: Use Pol-Ease® 2300 if making a polyurethane rubber mold.

The mold box is placed around the prepared sculpture to verify that the dimensions are suitable.

We estimate the amount of rubber needed for the mold with the following calculation:

Volume of Mold Box = ~1,716 in3

Volume of Sculpture = ~84.78 in3

Volume of Mold Box Volume of Sculpture: 1,716in3 84.78 in3 = 1,631.22 in3

1,631.22 in3 ÷ 23.7 in3/lb =68.8 lb of TinSil 80-15 Silicone Rubber

68.8 lb is a large amount of rubber and we realize that there is opportunity to reduce that amount by adding corner inserts and other block-outs.

We add a number of block-outs, but still maintain at least a 1 space between the sculpture and mold box walls/block-outs.

Once all of the block-outs are secured, the mold box is removed to seal the new plywood additions with petroleum jelly and caulk all edges with warmed plasticine clay. Caulking the edges helps to prevent leaking when liquid silicone is poured into the mold box later.

The sculpture is placed back into the mold box and then the mold box is secured with screws.

Casting Resin In The Diy Liquid Silicone Mold

Make Your Own SILICONE MOLDS on a BUDGET -TESTING 4 METHODS

I wanted it to be a bit easier to get my resin succulent out of the mold, so I use a pair of small scissors to strategically cut the opening out a bit more and then used a small syringe to fill the mold with green-colored resin. After that cured, it was time to get it out.

Long story shortI had to cut the mold up pretty badly to get the resin succulent out. Kind of defeats the purpose of springing for silicone that makes reusable molds, right? But it was a trial and error process. I now know that for an item like this, it would probably be best to do a glove mold or a multipart mold. Nonetheless, you can see that I actually was able to replicate the succulent! Pretty cool.

This was definitely a fun process, and I enjoyed working on a new skill. Hopefully some of my mistakes help you if youre Googling around wondering how to make your own silicone mold. I highly recommend both of the products I tried out! Good luck!
