Go Into It Knowing That Any Indoor Air Sample Is A Blip In Time

The first thing to remember is that an air test, just like any other way of testing for mold in an indoor environment is a blip in time. Essentially a moment is captured, cultured and/or analyzed from an environment. Even with multiple samples taken, this can be a problematic foundation from which to base judgement. An air sample, whether on a petri dish, or in a vacuum cassette, grabs a momentary sample from an ever-changing environment. If site conditions arent controlled and taken into account, how do you know if your sample is viable? The answer is, you dont. A number of factors inside a home are extremely variable and affect indoor mold counts. Individual air samples can show tremendous variation from minute to minute. This should make ok airborne mold test results a thing to always view with skepticism when looked at alone. They are just a piece of a bigger puzzle and should be regarded as such. Many more factors must be taken into consideration when evaluating a living space for mold.

So what about something more practical, like mold testing? Does this fall into the category of a hoax, or an attempt to make people believe they have a mold problem when they really dont? Or is mold testing truly reliable and accurate?

When mold testing is performed by a real professional, samples are collected and transferred to a scientific laboratory, where they are fully analyzed using modern mold testing equipment and microscopes. Because mold professionals have so much experience and knowledge, theyre usually able to determine very quickly what kind of mold youre dealing with, and what the best solution may be.

Variation In Airborne Particle Levels As Windows Or Doors Are Open Or Closed

This photograph of an open window in a New York City high rise office building displayed an enormous convection current – notice our low-tech demonstration?

The tissue taped to the underside of the window sash is blowing outside in this photo.

When this window was opened the level of indoor airborne particulate debris of all types was increased significantly, and further, any problem particles from lower floors were at risk of being drawn up into and through this office even though there was no problem reservoir in the office itself.

For details about the effects on airborne mold testing when a window is opened

see AIRBORNE PARTICLE COUNTS vs WINDOWS, DOORS

We would expect that opening the windows in a building to “air it out” will result in an indoor airborne particle level which is qualitatively and quantitatively similar to outdoor air. In some cases this is quite true if ventilation is long enough and if there is not an usual indoor mold reservoir in the room where testing is performed.

But opening the windows on the upper floor of a residence and certainly opening the windows in a tall building will usually cause a considerable increase in upwards moving air by convection currents in the building.

Warm air rises from lower to higher areas, exiting at the open window on the upper floor.

The two photographs shown here were taken by stereomicroscope examining two sequential airborne mold and other particle traces in air samples collected just minutes apart.

Mold can grow anywhere it finds moisture and organic nutrients, like wood or paper, to feed on. You may find it in a corner of your bathroom, laundry room, or basement, or any space that doesn’t have quality ventilation. If you come across mold, it’s imperative to remove it quickly and safely, as mold can be detrimental to your familys health. However, it can be a little difficult to know if mold exists in your home , which is where at-home mold testing comes in.

Mold testing kits help you detect and even identify growing spores in your home, through samples collected via the air or from the surface in question. Some give you results right away, while others ask you to package the samples and send them back to a lab for professional examination. With the resulting information, you can get the peace-of-mind that you’re looking for while making all of the necessary arrangements to remove the harmful fungi, or know your cleaning efforts were effective.

Here, the best at-home mold tests, that are both easy to use and effective.

Variation In Airborne Particle Levels In Heating And Air Conditioning Ducts

Mold Test Kit

How much variation in airborne mold or dust level do we see inside heating and air conditioning ducts and air handlers?

The photograph above shows a one liter airborne particle trace collected inside of a heating furnace return air plenum using a Burkard Personal Air Sampler.

The photograph below shows a second particle trace collected in the same location, with the same volume of air, with one difference: we tapped lightly on the side of the air plenum during the sampling process.

Even before counting the number airborne particles of any type per liter of air it is obvious that even modestly aggressive sampling can make a large difference in the level of particles seen in the sample result.

We conducted this test during a post mold remediation clearance inspection of a previously mold-contaminated air conditioning system.

The remediation contractor vehemently disagreed with the procedure of tapping on the ductwork during testing, informing us that “… his hygienist never did such a thing”.

We agree that consistency in test methods is important in order to be able to compare one mold test with another.

However if we’re looking for the presence or absence of a significant mold or allergenic dust reservoir that should have been removed, a little aggressiveness in sampling can be useful and in fact more accurate as well.

Pets Smoking And Crafts

If you have pets, a smoker in the home, do crafts that require glues or have other concerns regarding air quality. Regardless if you have symptoms or not, it is good to regularly check your air quality from time to time to make sure that the air you breathe is safe. After checking your air quality, you may become interested in a top-rated air purifier for pets or an efficient air purifier for smoke.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, consider an air quality test to make sure they arent caused by pollutants in your home:

  • Nausea
  • Hypersensitivity and allergies
  • Dizziness

If you have allergies and know the symptoms you experience when they are triggered, and you notice them increasing at home, its time to do a test of the air quality in your home. Unfortunately, most of the symptoms from bad air quality are similar to a common cold or flu, and many people brush them off. However, if they continue and no medication is working to reduce the symptoms, they are most likely caused by polluted air.

Does Dyson Purifier Remove Mold

Dyson air purifiers and fans cant remove active mold growths, but the filters do remove airborne mold spores. This improves your air quality and may reduce the chances of mold growing in your home. Mold is trapped in the filter, so it no longer circulates freely in the air. Keep reading to learn more.
