How Do I Stop My Grill From Molding
Mold is growing because theres something for it to consume, the only way to prevent it from happening is to clean your grill more effectively, or carbonize it before the fire goes out. Remember, hot air is less dense, so as the BBQ cools it will draw air in, hence the spores. Once there they thrive in the sheltered and often damp conditions in a closed-up barbecue.
Fortunately, there are a few steps you can take to lessen the chances of mold forming on your grill in the future.
Arguably the most important thing to do to prevent mold is to scrub your barbecue clean before you put it away. But its also a good idea to think about where youre storing it for the winter.
If your barbecue is staying outside, make sure you keep it away from direct sunlight. This is because once the temperatures begin to rise at the start of spring, mold can grow from any residual food left behind due to the temperature increase.
Additionally, you could consider storing your grill indoors. While we know that this isnt always an option for everyone, but if you can leave your grill indoors, you definitely should.
A garage or shed makes the perfect spot, as they offer protection from the elements all year round. Try to select a spot that is out of direct sunlight and without any leaks or drips. Be warned, a shed or garage with a leaky roof is the perfect breeding ground for mold.
Causes Of Mold On Grills
To start, as mentioned above, 9 out 10 times when mold appears on your grill is usually due to the use of a lid. Primarily a lid is used to preserve the outside of your grill. It keeps it from rusting, exposure to dust, moisture and dirt. However, the same lid prevents proper circulation of air and traps moisture within it, which are some of the causes of molds on grills.
First with a lid on your grill, most of the air is stagnant. If anything, only the open space has a continuous flow of clean air. In the end, this creates a good condition for the growth of molds that thrives on poorly ventilated surfaces.
Second, if you have a lid on your grill, in case of the occurrence of moisture, the moisture will be trapped within the grill. In this case, the lid covers the moisture preventing it from the full exposure to evaporation that is important to dry it. The result is the growth of molds and rust, which do well in the presence of humidity or moisture.
Other than that, another alternative to covering your gill with a lid is placing it under a shade during storage. With this, you do not risk the occurrence of mold because of moisture or poor air circulation.
Apart from using a lid, leaving grease on your grill may also create suitable conditions for the growth of molds. Grease functions the same way as moisture. As such, even without covering your grill, if you leave grease on your grill after cooking, you risk the growth of molds on it.
How To Clean Your Barbecue Grill
My husband is the “barbecue king” and we grill our food a lot.
There is nothing better than great food cooked outdoors with friends and family. The downside is the barbecue grill can get really dirty.
Barbecue grates are notorious for having burned-on yucky build up, especially if barbecue sauce or other seasoning is used when cooking. Because of this, I recommend you clean the barbecue grill twice.
Some people only clean their grills prior to cooking, or don’t clean them at all! Believe me, you want to clean the grill grates! If you don’t clean them, over time residue will accumulate and cause your food to stick – then the char you worked so hard to get just right – tears off.
It’s a big deal to me to keep the grill super clean, and not just because I’m picky.
We clean our grill before and after barbecuing. You get good results cleaning the grate after because the grill is hot which makes scrapping gunk off much easier.
We give the barbecue a quick clean before just to make sure it’s as clean as it can be before putting the meat on to cook.

How To Season A Blackstone Griddle
One of the best things you can do to your grill before you even use it is season it. Dont be thrown by the terminology here: this isnt a process of adding salt to its surface. Instead, its where we apply a thin layer of oil to the surface of the griddle. We then heat the oil and allow it to set.
What this does is create a thin layer shield over its surface, helping to prevent food sticking to it, and protect it against the threat of rust or wear.
Simply fill a bucket with warm soapy water, and use a dishcloth or rag to wash down the surface of the grill. This will help to remove any residue or dirt from it being in storage.
Leave the griddle out to dry for about an hour.
Now its time to start seasoning it. Apply a thin layer of oil across the surface of the grill, and use a cloth to spread it as evenly as possible. Cover every inch of the griddle, working into every area you can.
Turn the heat up on the griddle, onto medium-high heat. Allow it to heat and for the oil to smoke.
Once it starts to smoke, turn the heat off and allow it to cool. Wash down once again with warm soapy water. Allow to dry completely.
Your griddle is now ready to use.
Cleaning The Grill With Oven Cleaner
If you want to go all out in cleaning your barbecue grill using an oven cleaner will take care of a dirty grill, period.
The oven cleaner will get into all the nooks and crannies of the barbecue grill and do a great job getting the barbecue grill clean. .
Put the grates on a piece of cardboard, put on your eye protection, spray the oven cleaner, and scrub the grill with a plastic bristle brush. Rinse thoroughly and completely before barbecuing food on it.
You could leave the grill on the barbecue but make sure you don’t spray oven cleaner on anything other than the barbecue grill so as not to damage any part of the ignition system or the burners.
As you can see, there are many ways to clean up a dirty barbecue grill fast.
From a simple scraper, green cleaners to more heavy duty oven cleaners. You can clean the grates easily.
But the best part of cleaning your barbecue grill is having a great time in the backyard with good friends, family and great tasting food.

How To Position Your Grill Lids For Storage
Using a grill lid is essential to protect the grills interiors from dust and dirt. Besides, except for kettle grills, the grill lids are not removable for most BBQ grills.
The trick is to use a wedge to prevent the grill lid from completely closing. This opening will aerate the grill and prevent any moisture from building up. This will prevent molding and rusting on your grill.
The wedge can be made of any material that is softer than the grill itself. Materials like wood, plastic, and cloth work well to prevent the grill lid from closing.

Mold–tiny spores that grow in warm and damp environments–grows quickly on a variety of indoor and outdoor surfaces, including walls, floors, patio chairs and even your barbecue grill. Your grill’s grate, interior walls and lava rocks or charcoal is susceptible to mould growth due to food debris left inside of the grill and the enclosed environment when the grill is not being used. Mold growth needs to be removed before using the grill. If you don’t remove the mould, it will just continue to grow and spread.
Turn off the grill’s propane tank, if it is a gas grill.

If you have an extremely dirty grill with stubborn, caked-on grease or grime that doesnt loosen right away soaking the grimy grates overnight in baking soda and white vinegar can save the labor of scrubbing.
Try this method to deep clean your grates at the beginning of grilling season or use it after a cookout, especially if you cant scrub the grates right away.

We recommend never putting your cover in the washing machine, as we’ve had customers put their covers in the washing machine and have them turn out fine, while others said their covers were damaged from the harsh soap and agitation.
Grill covers are not the same as outdoor furniture covers. Upon the arrival of the warmer months, you do not need to use your outdoor furniture covers. But, grill covers should always cover your grill, except, of course, when you are using it to barbecue food.
