The most common type of mold found on shower caulking is black mold, but you may have also noticed a pink substance on caulk in a shower or on shower walls.

Both can be harmful to your health, although that pink slime isnt actually mold at all.

If you see pink on caulking, that usually indicates a bacterium called Serratia marcescens. This bacteria feeds on soap scum in damp bathrooms and isnt as harmful as the black mold.

It can pose health issues if it gets into an open cut or to people with pre-existing conditions, however.

Black mold is nastier and a common cause of allergies when present in a home. It can cause sneezing or red eyes in healthy individuals with prolonged exposure but is far more harmful to anyone with a repository condition.

Mold Cleaning Trick #: Baking Soda And Bleach

Its important to note that bleach does not kill mold, it simply removes the stain created by mold. Vinegar, as mentioned above, is a great way to kill mold. Start with the vinegar method and then move onto this method for the best results.

• Mix 1 tsp liquid soap and 1 cup baking soda. Add several drops of an essential oil, such as lavender, peppermint, citrus, etc.) and then add enough hot water to create a paste.

• Next, in a separate bowl combine 1 part bleach with 2 parts water. Add mixture to a spray bottle.

• Use the bleach solution to spray the affected areas in your bathroom. Let it sit and dry.

• After the solution dries, respray the area with your bleach solution and this time get in there with a scrub brush.

• Rinse the wall, and if you still see mold, go at it again repeating until the mold vanishes.

• In some cases, grout or caulking must be replaced.

Safety Precautions For Removing Mold From Bathroom Walls

Mold contains harmful toxins. For maximum health and safety, we recommend:

• Wearing old clothes you can throw away or deeply wash afterward
• Wearing an N-95 respirator, as well as gloves and eye goggles
• Wrap and tape moldy carpeting in plastic, then double bag it before throwing it away
• Use an old fan as a ventilator while youâre working. You will need to throw this fan out once youâre done to avoid circulating mold spores
• Moisten the mold with a sprayer before removing, as this helps control airborne spores
• Switch off HVAC systems and furnaces, and be sure to cover their ducts before mold removal

How To Remove Black Mold In Shower Drain

Shower drains contain cellulose materials via soap scum, body hairs, and oils and lots of moisture so they can be a breeding ground for black mold growth!

Its important to keep drains open and clear of cellulose materials. Treat the drain with vinegar and/or baking soda and water solution periodically to keep it clean and prevent mold spores from developing.

The important thing is to NOT pour bleach down your drain, and to take your time with the process.

Vacuum

Before you clean shower mold, you will want to clean your shower walls with a vacuum with a HEPA filter. This can help remove any loose mold rather than just moving it around your shower.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is an effective, gentle inexpensive cleanser. You can use baking soda to make your own shower cleaner. Use one cup of baking soda, one teaspoon of liquid soap, a few drops of essential oils, and enough water to make a paste. Spread the paste over the mold and allow to sit for a few minutes, then wipe away with hot water. Do not forget to clean mold from the shower door. This should remove most of the mold.

Bleach

For the mold that was not removed by the baking soda paste, you should try bleach. Make a solution of 1 part bleach to 2 parts water and put in a spray bottle. Spray directly onto the mold and allow to it to dry. Spray again and then use a scrub brush to remove the mold. Rinse with water. If there is still mold left, repeat the bleach process.

Bleach can be dangerous. Make sure to wear gloves and keep the bathroom ventilated to prevent inhaling toxic fumes.

Replace Caulk or Grout

If you cannot get rid of all of the mold, you may want to consider replacing the caulk or grout in your shower.

If you try the vinegar method along with the baking soda method, make sure to keep your bathroom well ventilated, as the mixture of the two results in the production of carbon dioxide, which can be toxic in large quantities.

Use the natural mold remover spray on finished, painted, or wallpapered surfaces. Spray the area well, then immediately scrub it with a clean cloth or brush to remove the surface layer of mold. • Remove the shower drain cover if there is one. If not, skip to step two.
• Spray the drain cover and/or the drain rim, inside, and stopper with peroxide.
• Allow it to sit for a few minutes.
• Using a toothbrush or the like, scrub all the mold you can see off the drain and components.
• Rinse well, dry, and replace the drain cover.
• Spray the drain generously with EC3 Mold Solution Spray or Remedy Mold Treatment Spray.
• Allow it to air dry.

Look for loose shingles or other damage that could allow water to enter your attic or home. Keep your foundation clear. Dont stack firewood or other items against your homes foundation, or youll encourage water collection there that will seep into your basement walls.

Fix cracks promptly. If you find gaps in your foundation or siding, fix them immediately to keep water out of your home. Clean your gutters in the Spring and Fall. Clogged gutters cause water to pool near your foundation, leading to water damage that causes mold.

Remember, mold wont go away on its own. If you find signs of it growing on your walls, you need to take prompt action to remove it with these easy homemade mold-killing sprays. Then keep it from coming back by controlling your homes humidity levels, promoting good air circulation, and cleaning routinely to remove mold spores.

What Is Pink Mold

Black mold isnt the only colorful invader of shower caulk. You may notice pink blotches appear on shower caulking over time, developing in a way similar to mold.
