How To Remove Mold From Curtains

Removing Mould From Curtains

How to remove mold from a shower curtain

Begin by vacuuming or brushing your curtains to remove the mould or mildew. You may want to do this outside or wear a mask to prevent the harmful spores from being inhaled. If you choose to use your vacuum instead of a brush then remember to dispose of the vacuum bag after use.

Once you have removed as much of the mould with your vacuum or stiff-bristled brush you can begin the washing process. If your curtains are machine washable this should be a relatively easy task. Ensure you follow the washing instructions correctly, its also recommended that you wash each curtain separately to stop any contamination.

If your curtains are dry clean only, then take them to a professional. Make sure you inform your chosen dry cleaner about the mould or mildew. This is extremely important as some dry cleaning processes could make your problem worse.

Once washed its then time to dry your curtains. If youre lucky the above steps should be all that’s needed to rid your curtains of any mould spots. However, just to be on the safe side its recommended that you let the curtains air dry. Dont risk putting your curtains through the dryer just in case theres still mould present as blasting the mould with hot air could make it harder to remove.

Removing Black Spot Mould On Curtains

We have large good quality blackout curtains for our patio doors but I’ve noticed on the lining at the bottom they’ve got patches of black mould. Just wondering if dry cleaning is the only option to clean them up or at least kill off the mould even if they remain a bit stained? Or is there another option? We want to get new vertical blinds but don’t want the mould possibly transferring onto them from the curtains.

I’ve used this to get rid of mould in this type of situation. There is a risk it might bleach the curtains. It doesn’t normally bleach stuff but sometimes it does so it might depend on the fabric. I have found it very effective for getting mould off curtains, net curtains, and I even had a lovely Batik and it got it off that without bleaching the picture. You could maybe try it on a small part of the fabric first to see? If it is just the lining that is mouldy I personally would risk spraying a small part of that and leaving it for a while to see.

I got it off using vanish for whites laundry powder. It was at the bottom so I sort of scrunched up the curtain and put a washing up bowl of the stuff between the curtain and lining and soaked it then scrubbed. No dry cleaners would take them, they all said it was impossible. They came up perfectly.

How To Prevent Mould And Mildew

The best way to treat mould and mildew is to work to prevent it occurring at all. There are a few steps you can take to prevent both, each of which may differ slightly. Maintaining an even inside temperature throughout your home helps to prevent moist air from condensing in colder areas such as windows.

A good way to keep moisture out of the air is to invest in a dehumidifier which helps to keep the humidity levels in the home between 30-50%.

There are other things you can do to keep moisture levels low in your home such as avoiding bringing wet clothes and shoes inside or drying wet clothes inside. Make sure to keep your home ventilated by having windows open during the day to prevent moisture build up and make sure your window coverings are good quality as this helps to keep the inside temperature regular and prevent condensation.

Regular cleaning of windows and window coverings can help deter mould and mildew removing any that is beginning to form before it affects your curtains or spreads anywhere else.

What Are The Steps For Removing Mold From Shower Curtains

The method you use to clean your shower curtains may vary slightly depending on the cleaner you choose, but theyre all extremely similar. Typically it involves scrubbing down the curtain, then letting it set for a bit so the cleaning agent has time to kill the mold and lift the spores away. In most cases, you should do this on both sides of the shower curtain before rinsing and drying it.

Use this handy step-by-step guide with any of the above cleaners to rid your shower curtains of pesky mold. First, gather your tools:

  • Cleaner of choice
  • Spray bottle, bucket or bowl
  • Stirring utensil
  • Scrubbing brush or other textured cleaning tool
  • Rubber gloves
  • Face mask

Once youve assembled your materials, find a flat, waterproof area to clean your curtain on. If possible, take the curtain outside or into a well-ventilated space. If you have nowhere else to go, spread the curtain out as best as you can in the tub. Prep the bathroom or other area by opening any windows and exterior doors. Interior doors should stay closed and sealed off if possible, even if this just means stuffing an old towel in the gap between the door and floor. If you have a box or standing fan, turn it on high facing outside in an open window or door to get the air circulating. Now youre ready to start cleaning:

  • Remove your shower curtain from the rod. Take out the rings and inspect them for mold as well. Set both aside.
  • Leave the cleaner to set on the curtain for 10-20 minutes.
  • Washing A Shower Curtain In The Washer

With me, this shower curtain would have ended in the bin ...

Most shower curtains and liners can be machine washed to remove soap scum, buildup and mold. While washing your shower curtain in the washer is quick and easy, you still may have to do some spot scrubbing to remove all the mold.

    • Remove the rings and shower curtain from the rod and fold inward into halves or quarters to keep mold spores from spreading around your home.
    • Place your shower curtain or liner into the washer with a few towels to protect them from the washing cycle
    • Add ½ cup of baking soda with your laundry detergent and run the washer.
    • Wash shower curtains and liners on the lowest gentle setting and remove them prior to the spin cycle and allow them to drip dry.

Is Vinegar Or Bleach Better For Killing Mold

Both bleach and vinegar do kill mold and remove the stains leftover. Each of the cleaning solutions also has a very distinct and pungent smell. Vinegar is usually diluted in water and then applied to fabrics with a spray bottle. Bleach, on the other hand, is typically added to washing machine cycles.

The most significant difference between these cleaning agents is that bleach will only kill mold on the surface of objects. Using bleach removes surface mold, but it is a less appealing cleaning option because it doesnt kill the spore at the root, which leads to the reappearance of the mold. Vinegar, on the other hand, penetrates porous surfaces like fabrics and kills mold spores inside the fibers, making vinegar a better choice to kill mold on curtains. The most effective time to include bleach in your cleaning is during the machine washing phase.

Make A Tea Tree Oil Mold Removal Formula

Unlike ammonia or bleach, tea tree oil is not corrosive. It also contains natural antifungal and antibacterial properties, making it another effective option for future mold prevention.

You only need a small amount of tea tree oil. Combine one teaspoon of the oil with one cup of water. Pour the ingredients into a spray bottle, shake thoroughly, and mist the affected area.

Tea tree oil is typically a very effective solution but these oils do not always provide the same mold-killing properties. When purchasing oil, look at the active ingredients.

The tea tree oil should contain at least 30% terpinene 4-ol and no more than 10% to 15% cineole. Naturenics Premium Organic Tea Tree Essential Oil offers the right combination, increasing the power of the oil for dealing with mold.

    Mold Resistant Shower Curtains

Most resistant liners are made of polyester, vinyl or plastic, which are treated with chemicals. While they do seem to delay the formation of mold, they wont protect indefinitely. The reason is that the soap scum and bacteria that will eventually coat the resistant liner is what the mold will actually feed on. So, yes, the resistant ones do work, but only until they get a bit grimy. The trick is to clean them frequently and spray with a vinegar solution after each shower. Be sure to close the curtains completely after use so that they will air dry.
