How To Remove Mold From Drywall

How Do I Clean Mildew on Concrete Floors? : Bathroom Cleaning & More

Removing mold from drywall can be tricky because if drywall gets too wet, it is ruined. In fact, its often easier to cut out the infected section of drywall and replace it, rather than trying to treat the mold directly. If the drywall feels soft, its beyond saving. However if you do want to clean the drywall without removing it, heres what to do.

Youll need:

Method:

Step 1: Brush the mold off the drywall using the scrubbing brush. Try to remove as much as possible without getting the wall wet.

Step 2: Make a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. Spray it onto the area until it is damp, but not soaked.

Step 3: Wait 10 minutes then use a medium-bristled brush to clean the wall using circular motions. Dont scrub too hard or youll damage the drywall.

Step 4: Wipe down the wall using household disinfectant wipes.

Step 5: Allow the wall to dry. In high-humidity environments, set up a box fan directed toward the wall to dry it as quickly as possible.

If the drywall is stained when dry, use a primer or stain block before repainting. Consider a mold-resistant paint to provide extra protection, and reduce humidity in the room to stop mold from returning.

3. Maintain humidity levels

Humidity levels are not challenging to maintain as long as you have a working dehumidifier. However, it is not advised to fully rely on your humidifiers.

Yes, cleaning concrete with vinegar will remove oil from concrete. You wouldnt believe it, but if youve had an oil spill in your garage, it will work.

Vinegar will remove mild oil stains from concrete. You might be able to remove even the deepest oil stains if you mix vinegar with dish or laundry soap.

To do this, mix half a cup of vinegar with soap and water. Pour the mixture onto the concrete and sprinkle it with sawdust. The sawdust will absorb the oil, and you can wipe the oil and sawdust carefully away after all of the oil has been absorbed. This will take about 30 minutes for unfinished concrete.

How does this work? The vinegar eats away at the cement in the concrete that binds its molecules together. The oil gets leached out of the concrete and absorbed by the sawdust so that when you sweep it away, most of the oil will be removed. Be careful not to sweep the dirty sawdust onto your clean concrete, or youll be cleaning that with vinegar next!

Which Is Better To Kill Mold Vinegar Or Bleach

We covered that both bleach and vinegar are great for killing mold on concrete. Now lets talk about which is better.

Vinegar, generally, is much better than bleach at killing mold. The EPA does not recommend using bleach to kill or remove mold, except in some specific circumstances.

Bleach only kills the actual mold, not the membrane found underneath that helps the mold grow and spread. Additionally, when you use bleach on a porous surface, mold membranes will move deeper into the surface to avoid the bleach.

Vinegar kills 82% of mold species and it even helps to prevent future mold outbreaks. Unlike bleach, vinegar penetrates porous materials and kills the mold at the roots. If you use vinegar, your mold is likely gone for good, but if you use bleach, you should expect to see that mold again.

Remove From Concrete Floors

For concrete floors, commonly in basements or the garage, be sure to start by scrubbing the area with a broom to loosen up the moldy surface. Then, mix water and detergent that does not contain any ammonia ingredients. Pour it onto the floor and work the mix with a broom or scrub brush to ensure it is getting into all the grooves to help removal.

Fill a bucket with clean water. Begin to mop up the area of affected concrete. Once the area dries, you can visibly see how much mold is left on the concrete, if any. Next, you will add a water and bleach mixture to the concrete area. Allow it to sit and then rinse again.

The last measure is to add trisodium phosphate to your bleach mixture. Once you saturate the concrete area with this, it should kill any that remains. You can allow this to dry. This removal method should kill what exists and prevent any further outbreaks on the concrete. Read our full guide on how to remove black mold from concrete.

How Do You Prevent Mold From Growing On Concrete

The best way to solve a mold problem on concrete is to prevent it from happening in the first place. One way to do this is by eliminating the key element mold needs to grow, moisture.

For concrete patios, driveways, and walks, cut back foliage that creates shady areas on a driveway or walk that never see the sun.

Also, check for cracks in the pavement that can collect water and cause mold growth. Fill these cracks using a concrete repair product.

For areas where this isnt possible, consider treating the concrete with an acrylic sealer designed for outdoor use. This prevents moisture from penetrating the driveway or walk, eliminating the environment mold needs to thrive.

For indoor areas, fix leaky pipes that are causing mold growth. For basements that flood, consider using a product such as Drylok to prevent moisture from entering the basement when it rains.

If that isnt an option, a dehumidifier is also an excellent means of keeping the humidity level in a basement in check, preventing mold growth. Remove materials that can get wet and breed mold growth, such as cardboard, wood, cloth furnishing, and area rugs.

Also, check the areas around the foundation of the home. If the earth is not properly graded to cause water to flow away from the house when it rains, grading may be required. Keep leaves and other debris from piling up around the foundation, which can trap water and direct it through the foundation and into the basement.
