Studio by Brown Jordan Outdoor Area Rug Care

Many detergents use Borax to increase the freshness of laundry and reduce the buildup of mildew in clothing. Its high pH levels are what kills mold in carpet fast, making it an effective solution to counteract water damage and even the toughest mold spore. The following recipe uses Borax and white vinegar, which is also an excellent way to kill black mold.

  • ½ cup of white vinegar
  • 4 cups of water

Mix the ingredients in a bucket. Soak a soft towel and dampen the moldy carpet with the cleaning product. Leave the solution for 30 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Dry the carpet thoroughly to prevent the wet carpet from causing additional mold growths or water damage.

Why Outdoor Rugs Go Moldy

Weve talked a few times about how easy it is for outdoor furnishings to go moldy, especially in rainy climates. To avoid this, we buy special patio rugs that are designed to be water resistant and live outdoors happily. Synthetic outdoor rugs are also specially made to prevent mold growth. So why do we still see mold developing on our rugs?

The answer is unexpected. Its not the rug itself that goes moldy: its the dirt trapped between the synthetic fibers that causes the problem. Dirt, grass and bits of plant get trodden into the outdoor rug, and because they can get moldy, they do. Spillages and food crumbs are another common cause of mold growth in outdoor rugs and furniture.

Moist outdoor conditions encourage mold, so while the synthetic fibers themselves are water and mold resistant, the foreign bodies trapped within them arent. Unless we keep on top of shaking, sweeping and cleaning our rugs, they will continue to attract mold growth, whatever theyre made from.

Synthetic materials dont guard against other unwelcome visitors, such as moss and algae. Again, if the conditions are right , these two will also invite themselves into your outdoor rug. This doesnt have to be rain: it can also be humidity, dew, water from tending to your plants, drinks spillages

Prevention is definitely easier than cure however, if youve noticed unsightly green areas starting to develop on the rug, there are a few things you can do to get rid of it.

What Is The Best Outdoor Rug Material

We highly recommend you choose a carpet made from 100% polypropylene.

This material is an all-time favorite among home designers. It is basically plastic, but that shouldnt scare you, since manufacturers were able to create wonderful designs out of it. Safe to say, outdoor rugs can be as beautiful as indoor rugs.

Let this bleach and water concoction sit for 15 minutes before rinsing it out with water. This will extinguish those mold colonies and let you shower in peace.

Lather And Gently Scrub

Mildew Resistant Round Outdoor Rug Pad

Much like your indoor rug, outdoor rugs can benefit greatly from a gentle scrub. First, check the care instructions to make sure that soaps won’t damage the materials. Always refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations, which can usually be found online if the tag is missing.

Next, choose a preferred cleaning solution. DIY cleaning solutions, like diluted dish soap, white vinegar, or baking soda, work well for most outdoor rugs. For most messes, a simple mix of a few drops of liquid dish soap in warm water should do the trick. Both white vinegar and baking soda are great ways to remove mildew or mold from an outdoor rug just be careful not to don’t overdo it as you might diminish the rug’s original color.

Club soda is another popular choice, especially for absorbing acidic stains like red wine. For sticky stains, tough spots, or greasy messes, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda mixed into a paste can be used as a spot treatment. Alternatively, there are many specialty or store-bought rug cleaners to consider, including pet-safe, green, and eco-friendly varieties.

After lathering, use a soft-bristle brush to gently scrub spots or the entire surface, as needed.

Outdoor mold is literally everywhere. Moldplays a huge role in our ecosystem and has since the beginning of time. Itisnt going anywhere.

How To Clean An Outdoor Rug

Everyone remembers to wipe down the tables and chairs when they’re getting ready to host a backyard party, but the outdoor rug often gets neglected. Over time, things like dirt and mud from shoes, dust, smushed berries and ketchup stains combined with the outdoor elements can make your outdoor living space look not-so-inviting.

Fortunately, indoor outdoor rugs are made to stand up to the elements, dry quickly, resist mold and mildew, resist fading and clean easily. There are two popular varieties of outdoor rugs, and both will last a long time if they’re cared for properly. Brightly-colored synthetic rugs are made of Olefin, propylene, acrylic and nylon. These varieties have a way of making you think they’re clean when they’re wet, but dirt rises to the surface once they’ve dried. Natural rugs are a strong choice when it comes to texture and durability, but should not be exposed to as much moisture as synthetic rugs. Although outdoor rugs are typically mold and mildew resistant, the dirt and moisture that accumulates on them is where these pesky fungi can grow.

It’s easiest to use one cleaner that addresses everything from grease to food stains to mildew smells. Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner is a cleaner, degreaser, deodorizer and stain remover that powers out dirt and grime on washable surfaces.

How Do I Clean An Outdoor Rug

Yesterday, I pulled my outdoor rug out for the first time this season! It doesnt have any stains, but was a little musty from being in the shed all winder. So I sprinkled it with baking soda and let it sit for awhile in the sun. Then I brought my shop vac outside and vacuumed the whole rug. The baking soda absorbed all the ordors and its good to go!

If you have deeper stains from dirt or mildew, you can still use baking soda for cleaning that out too! Which is great since its eco friendly and affordable .

Many rugs will have care instructions on the back, but what Ive found is that most rugs can be cleaned with the following steps

  • Pressure wash the whole rug
  • Pour the baking soda to where ever there are stains or dirt marks. Dont be afraid to use a lot of backing soda!
  • Scrub the sections where the baking soda was poured on. Make sure to run the brush in the same direction as the fibers go on the rug to avoid damaging it. Any scrub brush will do, but a will make this job easier.
  • Finish up by pressure washing the rug once again to rinse off the baking soda.
  • Note, its always a good idea to clean up spills right away by spot cleaning them with a rag, water, and baking soda. Using a leaf blower is a quick way to keep dirt from settling into the base of the rug .

Also, rugs should be cleaned from stains before theyre stored for the winter.

  • Prepare your Simple Green solution. Mix 2 ounces of Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner with 2 cups of water in an empty spray bottle.
  • Rinse the rug. It’s best to lay the rug on a sloped surface, like outdoor steps, so the excess water can drain away as you’re hosing it down. An even better option would be to rinse the rug while it’s hanging over a patio chair, fence or railing.

  • Rinse one more time. Rinse the entire rug one more time, either laying flat or hanging.
  • Dry. If possible, hang dry your rug outside in the sun. Flip it regularly to ensure each side gets completely dry.

How To Stop Your Patio Rug Getting Mildew & Mold In The First Place

As ever, prevention is better than cure, and a regular cleaning routine should prevent mold, mildew and moss in the first place. We wouldnt dream of not vacuuming our dining room area rug regularly, but seldom think to clean the one under our yard patio table. We all simply treat our outdoor furnishings differently to our indoor ones.

So, the first thing to do is change that mindset: our outdoor rooms need housekeeping too. The most important thing to prevent mold is to keep its hosts away, and we can do that by shaking or vacuuming all those bits of dirt, plant and crumbs out of the fibers. A smaller rug can be picked up and shaken, or hung over the line and beaten, like our grandmas would have done.

When its being used frequently , give it a good vacuum once or twice a week, making sure its dry first. Then, every month or so, give it a wash with vinegar and water, or even vinegar, water and baking soda for an extra-good clean. Make sure you spot-clean spillages and stains: soapy water for grease and a salt and water scrub for coloured stains.

If your rug gets wet, dont leave it on the patio or porch floor to dry, but loop it across the fence or washing line to let both sides dry. This will prevent moss and algae developing. If you dont have anywhere to hang it, lay it flat on sunny concrete or pavers, turning it so both sides get dry. Dont dry it with any form of drying appliance, as that can damage synthetic fibres.

    • The baking soda will then absorb the moisture and bad odor coming from the mold.
    • Vacuum and scrub your carpet with vinegar and a stiff bristle brush the next day to completely remove it.
    • Make sure that your vacuum has a HEPA filter that can collect any remaining mold spores.

Rinse The Outdoor Rug With A Garden Hose Or Pressure Washer

Again, you can use a bucket of water if you dont have a hose. Just make sure to absorb all the sitting water with dry towels.

To remove mold, you might also consider using bleach or a steam cleaner. However, both of these are risky.

Bleach only works well on white outdoor rugs, and even then, its difficult to work with. Bleach can also irritate the skin.

A steam cleaner may shrink the rug and damage it depending on the temperature of the steam.

So, its best to consult your manufacturer before you use bleach or a steam cleaner.

When Should I Call A Professional Carpet Cleaner To Get Mold Out Of Carpet Instead Of Cleaning It Myself

How to Clean your DuraCord Outdoor Rug

Sometimes a mold infestation is too much for us to tackle on our own. Mold can have detrimental effects on a persons health and is not something to disregard when it comes to your family. Calling a professional cleaner is imperative in these situations, and the only way to start the mold remediation process.

How do you know when to handle the mold problem yourself, and when to call in reinforcements? Patches of mold should only be dealt with by hand when they cover an area smaller than 10 x 10 in space. A professional carpet cleaner should treat anything more significant.

Some patches of mold may not appear significant at first, so if you are unsure of where the source of mold came from, you should double-check for mold growth. For mildew caused by pet stains, spills, or other known origins, it will not spread far if you catch it soon enough.

If you are unsure of the source, however, peeling back the piece of the carpet will help. If the mold has spread into the floorboards or wood on the walls, its time to call a professional.

Safety is the number one priority when managing mold problems and when getting rid of mold in carpets. If the mold has spread to other areas of the house, a mold remediation or removal service may be necessary. Otherwise, these nine different solutions will work great and save you money in the process.

    • 5 drops of lemon essential oil

Mix the ingredients, shake well, and spray the area. If you are concerned about bleaching the carpet, test a small square first to determine the effects of the solution.

  • Products that include an “encapsulate” treatment or “mold barrier” are designed to leave a clear barrier on the carpet fibers, preventing future mold growth. This is recommended for carpets kept in humid conditions.
  • A mixture of bleach and water can be used instead of a commercial solution. Mix half a cup of bleach with a gallon of water.XResearch source You may want to use color-safe bleach and test it on a corner of your carpet first to make sure that it will not cause discoloration.
  • 2Try a carpet cleaning product. Carpet cleaning products that contain deodorizers will remove the mildewy smell as well as fighting the mold itself. Follow the instructions on the product label, since products vary.
  • Some people report success with Vanish detergent products for carpets.
  • 3Apply chlorine dioxide products cautiously. Some mold removal products are based on chlorine dioxide, but be aware that this chemical can alter the carpet’s color. Test first on a small area normally covered by furniture, following the product label’s instructions.
