How To Remove Mold From Grout With Bleach

Chlorine bleach is the most commonly used cleaning agent when it comes to DIY mold grout removal. It works well and not only kills the mold spores, but also disinfects the area and removes the buildup of soap residue from the tiles and grout.

    Method 1:

    • Mix one part bleach to four parts water in a spray bottle
    • Spray the affected area, wait for about 30 minutes, then scrub vigorously with a brush
    • Rinse with cool, clear water. Repeat the process, if necessary.

    Method 2:

    • Use a stiff bristle toothbrush to scrub bleach directly onto the moldy grout
    • Let the bleach sit for about 15-30 minutes, then rinse with warm water. Repeat as needed.

    Warning:

    • Bleach causes fading and discoloration, so it should not be used on colored tiles or colored grout
    • The fumes from bleach can be irritating to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract, so you need to wear a mask, safety glasses, and rubber gloves when using it. Keep the room well ventilated during the cleaning process and let the windows open for a couple of hours afterwards to make sure that all harmful fumes have left the room.

According to recent statistics, more than half of all the homes in the United States have mold, which means you are not the only one struggling with the rampant growth of all that icky mold in your home.

It usually takes less than two days to grow, and the more organic matter it feeds on, the faster it grows.

Unfortunately, not everyone knows the dangers that come with these mere living organisms, but the truth is, it can cause some serious health issues if it is not completely eradicated.

    Why Mold Develops On Grout

One of the most common places to find mold is between tiles, because the porous nature of grout is highly susceptible to microscopic growth. Whether part of a kitchen backsplash or bathroom detail, tiles usually see a ton of moisture. Rarely do we take the time to dry tiles or the grout between them completely after we cook or wash. If a damp room has inadequate ventilation and you don’t run a fan or dehumidifier, it quickly becomes the right environment for mold. Removing mold from the grout between tiles can be tedious, but it’s well worth it to avoid mold-related illnesses.

How To Get Rid Of Mold On Walls

Many people first notice theyve got a mold problem when they see it growing on their walls. Check in the corners near the ceiling and floors in rooms with high moisture levels, such as kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and basements.

    Youll need:

    Scrubbing brush

    Method:

Step 1: Make a solution of one part bleach to three parts water in the spray bottle.

Step 2: Saturate the mold and surrounding area on the wall.

Step 3: Let the solution soak into the mold for 10-15 minutes.

Step 4: Using the scrubbing brush, remove the mold and stains.

Step 5: Repeat as necessary to remove all the traces of mold and mildew.

Step 6: Make a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide in the second spray bottle.

Step 7: Spray the cleaned surface and allow it to absorb and air dry.

This method works because it addresses the visible mold, as well as the underlying roots that often go untreated. Surprisingly, vinegar and hydrogen peroxide are both more effective at killing mold roots than bleach. Because they work best on different types of mold, try to use them together to cover all the possible varieties of mold you might be dealing with.

Pro Tip: If you dont have hydrogen peroxide at hand, you can also clean mold with vinegar and baking soda instead.

Tip: If there’s mold on the caulk that seals around your tub, faucet, sink or toilet, the safest thing to do is remove the caulking.
