Is Mold On Wood Furniture Dangerous

Yes, it is. Apart from being unsightly, mold on wood furniture can be dangerous to you and your family members. The allergenic mold type gives off a musty smell that causes coughing and aggravates allergic or asthmatic conditions. Other effects are rashes, dizziness, and breathing issues that affect your respiratory system. Itchy eyes, hay fever, and nasal congestion are other health effects caused by molds.

The pathogenic type of mold on your wood furniture can lead to severe diseases in your household members, especially those with weak immunity in their systems. They can suffer from skin irritation, athlete’s foot, organ infection, and nail problems.

If the mold on your wooden furniture is toxigenic, take special care. Because of mycotoxin substances, it may cause severe harm. Exposure to these substances is through inhaling, touching, or ingesting. Some deadly illnesses it can cause are cancer, liver damage, hormonal disorders, and nervous system disorders.

Mold also leads to wood damage as it penetrates the cloth on the furniture. If there is no cloth, it will still find its way into the wood, leading to the wood’s rotting. This will weaken the furniture over time and cause harm to individuals who use the furniture when it breaks.

Apply Vinegar Instead Of Bleach

Housekeeping Tips : How Do You Clean Mold From Wood Furniture?

Vinegar is the best natural mold killing treatment for the surface and sublayers of porous materials such as wood. Most mold remediation experts recommend diluting distilled white vinegar in a 5% to 6% cleaning vinegar solution in water or spraying onto moldy wood at full strength.

Be aware that full-strength or diluted vinegar may have the potential to damage waxed wood or other delicate finishes. If you are not sure whether to clean mold off of any article made of wood or wooden surface, consult with a mold restoration expert.

Apply a vinegar cleaning solution to materials that tolerate this treatment and then wait a full hour for the substance to sink in before scrubbing and wiping the surface. Reapply diluted or full-strength vinegar as needed before toweling off wood and speeding up drying by running fans or a dehumidifier.

Unlike bleach, vinegar penetrates deep into wood grain to eliminate every trace of mold. Chlorine bleach is only effective for disinfecting surfaces, and the water in this cleaning solution could be absorbed into wood and sustain fungal growth. Wood treated with bleach may also become damaged and discolored while remaining susceptible to mold regrowth.

Spritz With Distilled White Vinegar

For a small amount of mold growth that has not left severe stains or penetrated the wood, distilled white vinegar can kill the spores. Use a spray bottle to lightly mist the wood with the vinegar. Allow the vinegar to air-dry on the surface for at least one hour. If there are no stains remaining, use a good wood cleaner, such as Scott’s Liquid Gold, to nourish the wood. Then, buff the surface with a soft cloth.

You can keep humidity under control and at the same time to surround your home with plants that absorb moisture: fern, ivy or chamaedorea .
  • waterproofing: if waterproofing is done correctly, it can prevent mold from appearing inside the home. There are many types of materials that are used for waterproofing and it is recommended that this be done by a specialist so as to remove the problem of water infiltration through the walls.

How To Remove Mold: Mold Remediation (DIY)

If you have mold on your wood floor or ceiling, you should first figure out where it came from. This implies that youll need to look for any indications of water damage that could have caused the mold.

After that, you must clear away any furniture from the room. It exposes the whole area affected by mold.

To remove mold, begin by filling a vinegar, washing detergent, and water spray bottle halfway with water. Spray the afflicted area with vinegar for 10 minutes, then rinse it clean. This will eliminate any existing mold before mold can spread further.

When the mold is gone, use a clean, wet cloth to wipe away any solution. You may return furniture to its normal position when the floor has fully dried. However, we recommend checking the area every few weeks to make sure the mold hasnt returned.

If the mold has spread through the wood floor or ceiling, you can use hydrogen peroxide or a professional chemical solution. After saturating the affected wood with a solution for a few minutes, use a hard bristle brush to scrub away the mold.
