First, lets have a look at the different materials that you will need to make a silicone mold. There are quite a few but most are rather easy to get and all of them can be easily ordered online.

As a whole, the materials for making silicone molds are two-part silicone for mold making, MDF or acrylic sheets for making the walls, disposable measuring cups, some steering sticks, an old brush, a hot glue gun, a digital scale, and some air dry clay or polymer clay.

Here is a list of all of the materials for making silicone molds:

  • Air Dry Clay or Modeling Clay

If you are not sure where you can get all of these materials and what brands are best for mold making then don´t worry. Here are my personal choices for all of the materials and tools and where you can get them.

What Are The Differences Between The Various Aeromarine Products Mold Making Silicones

The AM128 Pourable Silicone Rubber is our best silicone for making professional molds. With its long work life and slower cure, it is easy to work with and is the most durable silicone we have. Youll be able to use this mold for longer production runs of urethane casts. Our AM128 Brushable Silicone Rubber is similar to AM 128 Pourable Silicone but sold with a brushable catalyst so you can save time when working on a vertical piece or an exterior façade. The AM125 Silicone Rubber is a quick curing silicone mold for one-off applications. It is good for people who are new to mold making. Its 1:1 mix ratio by volume makes it simple to produce one part block molds from. AM115T Silicone Rubber is a translucent silicone that cures to a frosted clear color making it possible for you to cut around parts. The AM150 High Temperature Silicone Rubber can be used to cast low melt metals like bismuth tin and pewter. The temperature range of the AM150 is -50 to 500F. The temperature range indicates the heat of the materials that can be poured into the silicone. Our Food Grade Silicone Rubber is primarily used for making hard candy, lollipops, chocolates, and fondant art. You can also use it for making frozen ice decorations. CopyFlex® is a food grade, liquid silicone rubber that was designed specifically for mold making. Unlike many liquid silicones that have complicated mix ratios and very thick consistencies, CopyFlex® is easy to use because equal amounts of both catalyst and base are combined to produce a silky smooth, low viscosity liquidsilicone rubber that reproduces the finest details. A 1:1 mix ratio is very convenient for large projects and also enables moldmakers to easily pour molds that may weigh as little as two ounces. Conventional liquid siliconemold making rubber often has a cure time of 24 to 36 hours which is very long when compared to CopyFlex® which will cure in four hours at 70 degrees F.

Remove The Clay After The First Part Of The Mold Has Cured

Next, remove the bottom of the mold and try to keep the walls intact.

Then remove all of the clay inside of the mold but try to keep the item and the sprue place holders in place when possible.

This step is really messy and annoying but with a little patience, you will be able to get all of the clay out.

Grease The Silicone Mold

Okay, wait a second I thought you said silicone baking molds were nonstick? Before you bite my head off, hear me out.

Yes, silicone baking molds are nonstick. But that doesnt mean theyre going to work perfectly every single time. They can also become less nonstick after multiple uses, especially if washed in the dishwasher.

In my opinion, it is always better to be safe than sorry. So, spritz on a dash of your favorite cooking spray and put your mind at ease.

And yes, it only takes a little bit unlike some of the other pans you may be using.

Measure Out The Silicone

The volume of the silicone needed for the model is equal to the volume of the 3D printed model subtracted from the volume of the mold box.

You can calculate the volume of your mold box by multiplying its width, length, and height. The best way to do this is to use a program that automatically calculates the volume of a 3D model like Netfabb or Solidworks.

Put on your safety goggles and gloves because measuring and mixing silicone can get messy.

Since silicone comes in two parts , which are the base and the catalyst, you have to mix both together thoroughly before the silicone can be used for casting. Each silicone brand has a mix ratio.

This mix ratio determines the amount of base mixed with the amount of catalyst. There are two ways you can mix silicone, namely:

Most silicone brands include measuring cups in the silicone package. For mixture by volume ratio, a certain volume of part A, the base, is mixed with a certain volume of part B, the catalyst, according to the silicone mix ratio.

An example would be the Lets Resin Silicone Mold Making Kit from Amazon which has a mix ratio of 1:1. This would mean, to create 100ml of silicone, you would need 50ml of part A and 50ml of part B.

How Do You Get Soap Out Of Silicone Molds

For starters, confirm that your soap has cooled down completely. It can take from six to 24 hours, depending on the size of the mold youre using. Typically, loaf molds take more time to cool down.

Once your soap has hardened and has cooled down, you can get it out of the silicone mold by following the steps described below.

  • Pull each side of the mold to break the airlock.
  • Once done, please proceed to flip over your mold on a clean surface.
  • Use your hands to press the back of each cavity. If youre using a loaf mold, pull on each side of it with your palms or in the middle. Do it gently not to damage the soap.

If the soap seems to have cooled down but doesnt get out of the mold, you can store it in the freezer for 10-20 minutes. Then, you can try again and see if the soap comes out again. Repeat as many times as necessary.

Tempering chocolate is a process of heating and cooling the chocolate so that it can be used in various molds. Tempering makes the chocolate less sticky, which allows it to be molded more easily. The reason to temper chocolate is to make sure that it doesnt stick up when its being used in a mold. Tempering also helps to create a smoother finish on the finished product.

Lets Resin Silicone Mold Making Kit

    Place The Mold Box Around Modeling Clay

    • Spread out the modeling clay on a sheet or any other flat material in such a way that it will completely cover one of the open faces of the mold box.
    • Add registration keys, which are small holes to the modeling clay for easy alignment with the mold box.
    • Place the mold box on the spread out modeling clay with one of its open faces resting on the modeling clay.

    The modeling clay is there to prevent silicone from pouring out of the mold box.

    Remove Model And Sand Supports

    This step is required to smooth the 3D printed model. The more well-defined the model is, the more well-defined the silicone mold cast from it will be. Support marks may be a pain to get rid of, but it must be done to make standard silicone molds out of any model.

    You should be careful while sanding your model, especially with resin 3D prints, so you dont deform the model.

    Using Silicone And Cornstarch

  • 1Squeeze out some construction silicone into a dish. Buy a tube of pure silicone from a home improvement store it usually comes in a syringe-like container. Squeeze some of the silicone out into a disposable dish. You will need enough to cover whatever you wish to mold.XResearch source
  • You may also find construction silicone labeled as silicone caulk. Make sure that it is not the quick-set type.
  • If the silicone did not come with a syringe, you will need to get a caulking gun first. Insert the tube into the gun, cut the end off, then poke a hole in the tip.XResearch source
  • 2Pour in twice as much cornstarch. If you can’t find any cornstarch, try cornflour or potato starch instead. Keep the box handy you might need to use more.XResearch source
  • If you want a more colorful mold, add a few drops of acrylic paint. This will not make the mold any more or less effective.XResearch source
  • 3Put on a pair of plastic gloves and knead the two together. Keep kneading until the silicone and cornstarch come together and form a putty. It may be dry and crumbly at first, but keep kneading. If it is too sticky, add some more cornstarch into it.XResearch source
  • You may have some cornstarch leftover in your dish this is fine. The silicone will have picked up all the cornstarch it needed.
  • 7De-mold your object. Hold the silicone mold by the edges, and gently bend it back and away from your item. Flip the mold over to pop the item out. If you need to, use your fingers to pry the item out.

    Carve Some Registration Marks In The Clay

    Next, you have to carve some registration marks into the clay all around the item.

    These registration marks will ensure that both halves of the finished mold will fit together as accurately as possible.

    I usually use the back side of a big brush to press some round dots in the clay all around the model. The more of these marks you do the easier it will be to align the two halves later on.

    This is also the time to put in two round pieces that will go from the model all the way to one of the walls. These will create the sprue for casting our mold later on.

    You can use a piece of small pipe or a very thick wire as a placeholder for the sprue.

    Choose a place on the item that has very little detail and then press the round piece, in my case, its a thick wire, in the clay so that it runs from the surface of the item to the closest wall.

    Then you will need another sprue where the air can escape from the mold when you pour the resin in.

    So use the round piece, again I used a thick wire, and run it very close to the main sprue to the same wall. Don´t run the second sprue too close to the first one!
