Baking Soda And Hydrogen Peroxide

The Best Way to Clean Shower Grout Mould and Mildew

If baking soda alone isnt quite cutting it, or if you think youll need a stronger solution, adding hydrogen peroxide could help to lift the stubborn mould from your tiles.

How to apply

Apply the baking soda as above, except in this instance pour over the hydrogen peroxide until the paste begins to bubble. This will assist with loosening the mould. As with the baking soda application, rinse with warm water and repeat if necessary.

Why Shower Grout Gets Moldy

Most tile grout consists of a mixture of cement, sand and water. These substances are porous, which is why grout tends to accumulate dirt and grime. Grout in a shower area may be exposed to other substances from bath, body and personal care products. The combination of these products, moisture and food sources for fungi may lead to the development of mildew or mold.

Fungus that appears white, gray or yellow in color and has a fluffy or powdery texture is usually mildew. A simple test that can distinguish mildew from grime involves dabbing a paper towel dampened with chlorine bleach on a spot of the growth. If this area turns lighter in color, the contamination is mildew.

Mold may be any color, but the species most likely to grow in warm, moist environments may be dark green, brown or black. Fungus that appears black at a certain stage of the growth cycle may not necessarily be toxic black mold, also known as Stachybotrys chartarum. Mold inspection or testing may be helpful for determining the cause and species of the mold in your shower.

How To Get Rid Of And Prevent Bathroom Mold

Learn how to remove and prevent mold from growing in your bathroom in the future.

Mold is infamous for producing spores that, when inhaled, can cause anything from rashes to headaches to respiratory problems. At-risk groups such as the very young or old and people with compromised immune systems, mold sensitivities and allergies, or asthma can have serious reactions to mold.

What Is Mould And How Can It Affect You

Best Way to Remove Mold and Mildew from Tile Grout

Common bathroom and kitchen mould, also known as black mould, refers to several different species of fungi that thrive in warm, moist environments. The most common species is Stachybotrys chartarum, which can spread through an entire room very quickly typically within 24 to 48 hours. Beginning to grow as soon as its spores land on a damp material such as plaster, drywall or grout, it colonises in under two weeks and can grow in size at a rate of one square inch per day.

Characterised by a distinct musty damp smell and dark green/black colour, these types of mould are not harmful in themselves, but can release dangerous toxins into the surrounding room. Breathing in these toxins can cause a number of different health issues, including respiratory problems and asthma attacks for those who suffer with this ailment. If you are exposed to this mould for a long period of time, you become increasingly at risk of developing black mould poisoning. Symptoms mirror that of a common cold and include coughing, breathlessness, a sore throat, a runny nose and even nosebleeds. Unsurprisingly, people who suffer with lung disease or a weakened immune system tend to have a higher risk of being directly affected by these toxins.

Ways To Prevent Shower Mold

  • Practice good ventilation. Open the bathroom window when showering. Turn on the exhaust fan when showering and leave it on for 30 minutes afterwards. Keep the bathroom door open when showering if possible.
  • Shower drains contain biofilm and cellulose materials such as soap scum, body hairs, and oils and lots of moisture so they can be a breeding ground for black mold. It is important to keep drains open and clear of cellulose materials. Remove any hair after showering and pour a little vinegar down the drain weekly to keep the drain clean and prevent mold spores from developing.
  • After showering wipe down the entire shower including all your shampoo and soap bottle.
  • Once a week spray the shower with EC3 Mold Solution Spray or Remedy Mold Treatment Spray to kill any new mold spores that may be trying to root.
  • Clean your shower from top to bottom every 14 days at a minimum. Weekly is better but no one has time for that! So shoot for every two weeks.
  • If possible, DO NOT USE one of those suction cup non-slip mats in the shower. Those are a mold magnet.

Using Bleach To Remove Mold From Grout

For grout that is white beside white tiles, we suggest a recipe of bleach and water. You can effectively clean tile grout, kill the mold fast and clean up the shower at the same time with this most basic of household cleaning agents.

    • An old toothbrush or scrub brush

This is a good basic recipe for making the most out of your grout cleaner needs. Mix the ingredients in a plastic bucket while wearing safety glasses. After you rub the paste on the mold, let the bleach sit for at least a half-hour to soak into mold spores and other dirt.

Find an old toothbrush. Soak it in the bucket of vinegar and water, and use your scrub brush on the mold. Let it sit for 30 minutes, and attack it again. The now-dead mold and soap scum should come off without a problem.

After this, you should feel safe showering once again. If you have more mold in the house, like in the laundry room, you need to know what gets rid of mold elsewhere in the house. These recipes prevent mold build up in the future, so we dont breathe in mold spores.

Black Mold In The Shower Method And Product : Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Another product you can try is a regular toiler bowl cleaner. I have had great success using that as well. Use it the exact same way as method 2, in conjunction with a paper towel.

But instead of soaking it, just pour the toiler bowl cleaner right on the spot, and then add the paper towel to kind of keep it in place.

There you go, three methods and products that you can try to clean that black mold in the shower or bathroom or even kitchen tile.

    Happy cleaning!

NOTE: For extremely tough moldy spots you may need to use a combination of all three of these methods and products. Start with the cheaper methods first, like bleach and toilet bowl cleaner. Again the gel works amazingly on grout on tiled walls.

Gently Scrape The Top Layer Of The Grout

If you find stubborn, embedded mold in the grout, you can use a grout knife to gently scrape the damaged layer of grout off of the surface. However, do this cautiously since the tool is perfect for removing grout, and you only want to remove the upper stained layer. Removing too much will encourage mold growth in the future.

How To Remove Mold From Grout With Bleach

Chlorine bleach is the most commonly used cleaning agent when it comes to DIY mold grout removal. It works well and not only kills the mold spores, but also disinfects the area and removes the buildup of soap residue from the tiles and grout.

    Method 1:

    • Mix one part bleach to four parts water in a spray bottle
    • Spray the affected area, wait for about 30 minutes, then scrub vigorously with a brush
    • Rinse with cool, clear water. Repeat the process, if necessary.

    Method 2:

    • Use a stiff bristle toothbrush to scrub bleach directly onto the moldy grout
    • Let the bleach sit for about 15-30 minutes, then rinse with warm water. Repeat as needed.

    Warning:

    • Bleach causes fading and discoloration, so it should not be used on colored tiles or colored grout
    • The fumes from bleach can be irritating to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract, so you need to wear a mask, safety glasses, and rubber gloves when using it.
