    What Is Rotational Molding

The plastics molding technique, rotational or roto-molding, is excellent for producing hollow objects. Although it is a casting technique, it does not use pressure as most other plastics processing does. Because the processs molds dont need to withstand pressure, they are reasonably cheap and may be produced in relatively short batches at a very low cost.

A wide variety of goods are produced using the roto-molding process. Since almost any shape may be made, the method gives the product designer a great deal of creative freedom. There are literally thousands of uses for moldings, and there are virtually no size restrictions.

Molds, ovens, cooling chambers, and mold spindles are often included in all rotary molding systems. The item is manufactured using molds, which are commonly composed of aluminum in a medical plastic injection molding company. The caliber of the mold being utilized has a direct impact on the products quality and finish.

The portion is heated in the oven while being rotated to give it the desired shape. The spindles are mounted to rotate and create a homogeneous coat of plastic inside each mold, and the part is placed there until it cools.

    Best Coolers For Keeping Ice

There are no better coolers on the market than roto molded coolers for keeping ice and ice stored in a roto molded cooler can stay frozen for 3-10 days, depending on the size and outside temperature.

Ice retention performance that rotomolding creates lets you keep your drinks cold, but also keep fish and other game from spoiling on fishing or hunting trip.

It also doesnt matter whatever extreme weather condition, rotomolded coolers will keep ice frozen for a long period of time, up to 5 days on average.

Which Cheap Rotomolded Coolers Are Best

I think that for the price RTIC makes the best rotomolded coolers on the market. They offer coolers that are comparable in size and features with Yeti coolers but are much more affordable. RTIC coolers are typically around $100 cheaper for a comparably sized cooler that will function pretty much the same.

RTIC coolers also look really similar to Yeti coolers, so similar in the fact that they were sued by Yeti and forced to make their coolers with a different design so that they no longer look like Yetis cooler models. With that said RTIC is still selling their coolers that look really similar to Yetis design. That may only last until they get rid of their inventory of existing coolers, Im not sure. For right now though you can get a rotomolded cooler with comparable performance to Yeti coolers at a much cheaper price.

Rotomolded Coolers Are The Most Durable

Rotomolded cooler walls are thicker than other cooler walls, making them stand up against tough conditions. Since rotomolded coolers are crafted in one hollow piece, they are durable and more resistant to cracking than other types of coolers.

Compare this to coolers made through the injection-molding process they are made in two pieces and then fit together with insulation. This creates lines that can more easily be broken or cracked.

    Molds For Rotational Molding

Every product produced via the rotational molding process requires a mold, or a tool.

Once the rotational molding design process is complete, the next integral step to going into production is for a mold or tool for rotational molding to be completed. It is critical that the molds be designed accurately and completely for the process in effort to keep the process efficient and on track. While molds can be fabricated, cast or even machined, sometimes the time table for the project will dictate which process is used to create the tooling if there is time constraints surrounding the project. Mold costs are typically the determining factor of the project, which will dictate the selection of the mold manufacturing process. Also finding a rotational molding supplier that operates an in-house mold or metals shop is integral to the success of most rotational molding customers, as they can build, modify or repair molds in house, eliminating down time for repairs, transit, etc.

Chapter : Types Of Rotational Molding Machines

The standard set-up of a rotational molding operation consists of an arm or cradle, which carries the mold, single or multiple ovens, and cooling chambers. The only difference among the machines is in the direction where the mold travels, following the sequence of the rotational molding process. The machine types used in the rotational molding process are the following:

    Materials Used In Rotational Molding

Polyethylene is the most common plastic that is processed via rotomolding. However, the process has given way to several more materials recently. These include:

One thing to keep in mind, however, as far as materials are concerned is that the process is one of the faster growing part production methods – so it’s likely that engineers will incorporate more materials into the process as technology continues to advance.

Which Rotomolded Coolers Are The Cheapest

    ARM Low Temperature Impact Test

RTIC is going to be hands down the cheapest rotomolded cooler manufacturer. I am not paid to say this about RTIC this all comes from research that I have done in comparing different cooler brands. Some people have complained that the latches that come with RTIC hard shell coolers are not as nice as with Yeti hard shell coolers which may be a bit of an inconvenience but something I could put up with if Im going to be saving money.

Another gripe that was mentioned about RTIC coolers vs Yeti coolers specifically was that Yeti has a better dealer network for warranty work compared with RTIC coolers. If you have a warranty issue with Yeti coolers you send your cooler off to a Yeti dealer and they send you a replacement cooler until they can confirm the warranty issue with the product.

With RTIC coolers they are direct to consumer seller so if you need to use your warranty for them you have to ship your cooler off, they will review if the issue with the product is valid and if so send you a new one. During that time though you would be without a cooler, not a deal breaker but something to keep in mind.

The Cooling Phase Of The Mold

After melting is done at the required level, and the timing is perfect, the mold is detached from the oven and then cooled. Typically, cooling is usually done with water, air, and sometimes a combination of both. During the cooling process, the Polymer solidifies the required shape and then gradually contracts before the operator eventually removes it from the mold. It is essential to measure the cooling time because faster cooling causes the Polymer to distort. Note that the cooling process is quite lengthy and may take up to ten minutes.

Other Considerations For Rotomolded Polyethylene Boats

While these vessels have numerous benefits, they aren’t appropriate for all situations. For kayaks and the like that are regularly going to go through strenuous conditions , more specialized and durable materials will be better in the long run.

However, for anyone that wants an inexpensive vessel that can survive harsh conditions on occasion, rotomolded polyethylene exceeds in both of those categories can make an excellent pick, especially if you care about sustainability.

    Thermoforming And Blow Molding

Thermoforming works by heating a sheet of plastic. It is heated up to the point where it becomes flexible enough to be pliable. It is then molded into the desired shape and trimmed.

Blow molding works a little like conventional glass blowing. The plastic is heated until it is molten, and then it is filled with air. The air forces it to expand into a mold, making it conform to the shape of the mold. It is then cooled and ejected from the mold.

This used to be more common before the advent of rotomolding but has not becomes more of a relic than a common cooler forming process. Very few coolers are made using this process and they are characterized by a very inconsistent thickness.

Both of the methods above share many of the disadvantages that injection molding has. As a result, they arent very popular in the industry and do not yield high quality coolers.

    Advantages Of Rotational Molding Services

    Rotomolding from Gregstrom

With its low tooling costs and quick tooling modifications, rotational molding a process also known as rotomolding or rotocasting is ideal for prototyping and for both low and higher volume production runs. Rotomolding tooling ranges from simple two-piece sheet metal molds to multi-piece aluminum molds with articulating features.

Rotomolding is flexible enough for projects ranging from small, intricate designs to large, complex parts and assemblies. Many rotomolded shapes are impossible to produce by other methods. Moreover, because theres no pressure in the rotational molding process, hardware made of various materials can be molded-in for strength and durability. Other plastics molding processes just cant support molded-in hardware like rotomolding can.

Rotational molding also supports a wide variety of surface textures and colors. Rotocasting or rotomolding even supports uniform walls without the thinning in the extremities thats common to other processes. Designers like how Gregstrom can create rotomolded parts with undercuts and multiple walls, too. Rotationally molded parts can also be filled with polyurethane foam for added strength or insulation.
