Add Paint To Mixing Bag
Begin by placing a generous amount of acrylic paint into the heavy-duty zip bag. Theres no hard and fast recipe, but in this tutorial Ill be working with ratios, so use one part paint. To scale up or down, just consider one part a smaller or larger unit of measurement, i.e. teaspoon, tablespoon, cup, pint.
I add paint for two reasons: 1. added pigment makes it easier to visually gauge when the mold material is mixed and ready to pour, and makes it easier to get a sense of the thickness of the silicone in a particular area of the mold. 2. Normally, silicone is catalyzed to cure via exposure to moisture in the air. The addition of craft paint integrates moisture directly into the mix, which means your silicone mold will cure as quickly as one hour, instead of the 24 hours normally needed for pure silicone.

Let Cure And Remove The Object
After my mold was done curing, I used a popsicle stick and a spoon to pry it out of the container. The good news is that this silicone cures really well. It was very tough and strong. The bad news is that that meant I couldnt easily get my succulent out of the silicone. I didnt leave enough of an opening at the top.
Heres what I did. First I cut off the corners to hopefully give me more leverage to pop the succulent out. No dice. So I decided to pry the succulent out. Its a good thing I wasnt keen on keeping the succulent, because I ended up pulling some leaves off in the process. Oops! Definitely leave a bigger opening than I did!!

How To Make Your Own Chocolate Silicone Molds
Step 1: Prepare the water
Fill your bowl with room temperature water and dish soap. We recommend using 1 part dish soap to 10 parts water.
Step 2: Make your silicone mold
Squeeze a good amount of silicone into the water. Knead the silicone for roughly 5 minutes or until it is no longer sticky.
Remove the silicone from the water and pat it dry. Shape it into a disc. You can now mold your disc as you would like using tools. Alternatively, you can place an item in the silicone, like a toy car, pebble, or egg whichever shape and size youd like.
Allow the silicone to harden before removing the item and using the mold. Make sure that it is clean.

Helpful Hints For Creating Silicone Molds
- If you do not have the time or energy to make a frame for your silicone mold, you can use any old Lego bricks that you may have lying around. Lego bricks are ideal for building a fitted frame around your mold, underneath which you can place your wooden base plate.
- Your silicone needs to be kept at a suitable temperature while it is curing. Room temperatures below 64 degrees Fahrenheit will take a long time to cure, whereas higher temperatures can cause the silicone to become clumpy or to dry too quickly. The ideal room temperature is one that falls between 64- and 68-degrees Fahrenheit .
- If you want to determine how much silicone you need, fill your fully-prepared frame with uncooked rice. The rice should cover the item to be molded by about 1 cm. You can then carefully pour this rice out into a bowl and weigh it. The weight of the rice should be close to the amount of silicone you will need.
- If you are a beginner at mold-making, you should try not to do too many projects at once. It is better to begin with simpler items first and allowing yourself the time to experiment before moving to more complicated pieces.
Materials For Making Silicone Molds
First, lets have a look at the different materials that you will need to make a silicone mold. There are quite a few but most are rather easy to get and all of them can be easily ordered online.
As a whole, the materials for making silicone molds are two-part silicone for mold making, MDF or acrylic sheets for making the walls, disposable measuring cups, some steering sticks, an old brush, a hot glue gun, a digital scale, and some air dry clay or polymer clay.

Remove Your Silicone Mould From The Housing
When it comes to removing your mould, you will initially want to score along the edges to release any suction from the sides. I start by carefully scoring with a Stanley knife then sticking an old butter knife along and levering underneath. Depending on the size of the item you’ve moulded, this should provide you with enough room to put your fingers underneath and pull out the mould.
If your design is stuck and you’re struggling to remove it, you can of course destroy the housing, it just means you won’t be able to reuse it again later.
You now have a silicone mould which should accurately represent the template you just moulded!
Silicone Molds With Undercuts
Silicone molds with so-called undercuts can be a particular challenge. Blanks with undercuts have clearly visible, protruding corners and edges that can get in the way when they are removed from the mold. If these undercuts are relatively small and you are using soft silicone , these edges should not cause any major problems. A little more tricky will be the case with larger undercuts. In this case it is advisable to make a two piece or even multi piece mold. You should decide in any case for the flexible soft silicone rubber and pay meticulous attention when removing the object that it is not overstretched.
If it is not possible to remove the blank in the normal way, you can cut the silicone mold at one edge and then remove the blank. The resulting cut can then be closed by attaching some very tight rubbers to the mold. This makes it very easy to remove the cast part from the negative mold later.

Measure Resin And Add Dye
Supplies Used: Resin , measuring cups, measuring sticks, dye.Just as with silicone you will need to measure each part of the mixture taking into account the volume needed to create a part.
If you have made several molds, you can mix a larger quantity of resin and pour several molds at once.
Add dye to the part of the resin mixture specified in the instructions.
How To Make A 1
A 1-part mold is usually best to use for items that have one flat side with no details on it. This side will be laid flat on a surface and the silicone will be poured on top of the item.
Later the epoxy will be poured from that side and level itself through gravity creating a flat side right where it was on the original item.

Negative Forms Without Original Form
In this technique, the silicone is placed in a basin or bowl containing a mixture of detergent and water. There it becomes a malleable mass with which the blank is enclosed. The silicone mass should not be used too sparingly, otherwise the form becomes unstable and brittle.
Think of an opening to remove the object or a place that can be cut open after curing.

Where To Buy Silicone Molds
You can find silicone molds everywhere. I order a lot of my special ones from Amazon, but I also pick up molds at the dollar store, grocers, crafting stores and kitchen supply shops. Im always on the look out for unique and special molds.
Note, molds vary in quality and construction. Not all molds will work for all projects. For instance something with a lot of detail may not work well for making bath bombs, but is great for soaps. Some molds are thicker and stiffer construction making it harder to remove items, but also making them better for really packing in materials. They all have their uses. So I suggest collecting all of them!

Apply A Mold Release Spray To The Entire Model And Half Of The Finished Mold
Then use a mold release spray to spray the whole model and the other part of the mold with it.
, but any decent mold release spray will do. I tried a lot of them and this far all of them worked quite well.
The mold release spray will make it possible to separate the two parts of the silicone mold from each other.

Hey guys! Im sharing a product review and tutorial today. Its been a long time since Ive done one of these reviews, so Im excited to dig in and try something new: making my own silicone mold. Im specifically making this mold for use with resin and will be using and reviewing ETIs EasyMold Silicone Putty.
Place On A Level Surface And Leave To Cure
Place your silicone template onto a level surface to cure. It is important the surface is level to ensure any future pieces you cast with that mould are also level.
Gently tap the sides of your housing to bring any additional air bubbles to the surface. You may also notice some micro-bubbles which you can pop with your mixing stick or a cocktail stick.
Depending on the silicone you have used, it will need several hours to cure. The silicone I use is set within 5 hours, however, I usually leave it a full 24 hours to ensure it’s solid.

Working With Epoxy Resin
For working with epoxy resin, the resin and a corresponding hardener are the basic requirements. Depending on which project you want to devote yourself to, other materials such as different color pigments will be added. Often polished silicone molds are also needed. There are practically no limits to creativity when it comes to shaping: Cubes, balls, pyramids, stars, hearts, flowers, coasters and all kinds of figures. Anything is possible and can be filled with epoxy resin to create beautiful works of art or gifts.
In the form of your choice you give the finished epoxy resin mixture. Either we use the mixture crystal clear, or colored with liquid colors or pigments. You can then add various elements such as glitter, stones, shells, flowers, etc. if you wish. After hardening, carefully remove your finished work from the mold.
How Do You Make A Homemade Mold Out Of Silicone
Mold Making Materialallows you to create custom silicone molds for shaping food items. The productcomes in two parts that, when mixed together, cure from a liquid silicone to a flexible, high strength rubber, perfect for DIY molds.Simply mix equal amounts of Part A and Part B until the color is one, consistent, blue hue.

Can A Silicone Mould Be Reused
A silicone mould is not a one-and-done item. It is a product that can be used time and time again over a sustained period of time. Of course, the longevity of the silicone mould is dependent on the quality of materials used to make it which is why our tutorial features the highly rated Mold Star 15 by Smooth-On.
Removing The Finished Silicone Casting Mold
- The curing time of the silicone mold depends on the silicone used and its size. It can vary between one and 24 hours. If you want to check if the silicone is completely cured, you can gently press it into the mold with a finger. If you notice that the mass has hardened, the silicone mold is now released from the frame. If it has been thoroughly treated withmold release agentor oil, this is usually no problem. For the final straightening of the edge, it is best to use scissors, a carpet knife or a scalpel.
- In order to keep the silicone supple and to maintain it, you can rub it with talcum powder after releasing it from the frame and after each use.

Measure Out The Silicone
The volume of the silicone needed for the model is equal to the volume of the 3D printed model subtracted from the volume of the mold box.
You can calculate the volume of your mold box by multiplying its width, length, and height. The best way to do this is to use a program that automatically calculates the volume of a 3D model like Netfabb or Solidworks.
Put on your safety goggles and gloves because measuring and mixing silicone can get messy.
Since silicone comes in two parts , which are the base and the catalyst, you have to mix both together thoroughly before the silicone can be used for casting. Each silicone brand has a mix ratio.
This mix ratio determines the amount of base mixed with the amount of catalyst. There are two ways you can mix silicone, namely:
Most silicone brands include measuring cups in the silicone package. For mixture by volume ratio, a certain volume of part A, the base, is mixed with a certain volume of part B, the catalyst, according to the silicone mix ratio.
An example would be the Lets Resin Silicone Mold Making Kit from Amazon which has a mix ratio of 1:1. This would mean, to create 100ml of silicone, you would need 50ml of part A and 50ml of part B.
