Is Starbucks Coffee Mold Free

Growing Environment Elevation Elevation Elevation

Starbucks thanks frontline workers with free coffee for the month of December

The environment where the coffee beans are growing plays a role in the number of Mycotoxins in the coffee beans. Mold spores are far less likely to grow at higher elevations so buying coffee beans that have been grown and harvested in the mountains is a simple way to decrease the risk of Mycotoxins in your coffee. Select coffee beans from the countries of Ethiopia, Columbia, Kenya, Guatemala, Sulawesi, & Papua New Guinea.

How To Brew The Perfect Cup Of Clean Coffee

Grind

For the freshest taste, grind your Clean Coffee immediately before brewing. We recommend a burr grinder for the best results and suggest a coarse grind for longer brewing methods such as French Press, medium coarse for drip, and a finer grind for fast brewing methods such as the Moka Pot .

Brew

According to the Specialty Coffee Association, the ideal ratio of coffee to water is 55g ground coffee per liter of water.

We recommend using 1 tbsp ground coffee per 8oz cup, increasing up to 2 tbsp for a stronger brew.

Sip

Clean Coffee is rich, smooth and lacks the bitterness common to many coffees, so you can enjoy it black, with a touch of cream, or blended with MCT oil, collagen, and superfoods for a functional alternative to a traditional breakfast!

Savor

Take the time to savor the full flavor and rich aromas of Clean Coffee while feeling proud to be drinking the worlds best cleanest coffee!

Acrylamide In Coffee Is Linked To Cancer However You Can Control The Amount

Just when you were overwhelmed by toxins from fungus, you also have to learn about another carcinogen inside the coffee, acrylamide. Acrylamide is linked to cancer and coffee is one of your major exposures to it, followed by baked goods and fried potatoes. Make these selections to cut down on acrylamide in your coffee.

  • Pick dark roast vs. light roast
  • Choose arabica beans vs. robusta beans
  • Select brewed coffee vs. espresso or french press coffee
  • Brew it freshly from beans vs. instant

Acrylamide in coffee varies from 5 parts per billion per cup to 605 parts per billion per cup. Dont worry, this is all reflected in our investigation. Weve included the rest of the results from the FDA in our brand investigation to reflect the brands that were lower in higher rankings. Sadly, your hazelnut instant coffee brands need to get pitched.

A Problem With Detection And Testing

A great French study found analytical problems will seriously impact the amount of OTA detected, especially at the levels close to the limits from the EU legislation. Underestimation of OTA could be highly dangerous for health. There is disagreement over the level of OTA in coffee because laboratory techniques, including those used for regulatory purposes, suffer from problems with OTA turning into other substances at high pHs, and from less toxic OTB, which interferes with the test. Complexities like this are why a 2009 review says no single technique stands out above the restit is impossible to use one standard technique for analysis and/or detection . The best techniques are tricky to do in the lab and they are expensive.

This is why some people especially those new to OTA testing have a harder time finding OTA in coffee compared to others. OTA is not always in coffee, but it is often present, and my research shows it is just one of the mold toxins in coffee that has effects on stress levels and performance, even at levels deemed to be acceptable in the countries that bother to regulate it. No agricultural product, including coffee, is 100% mycotoxin free, but with a lot of work, it is possible to control levels until they are below the threshold where they cause most problems in most people.

Introducing Kion Coffee: The Best Toxic Free Coffee

I love, love, love Kion Coffee! Kion Coffee is in the worlds top 3% of all coffee beans, known as Specialty Grade.

Specialty Grade coffee is an important distinction for me because it means transparency. Where the beans are sourced, the date of harvest, and the varietal of the beans are all traceable.

Kion Coffee is ethically sourced, meaning the farms are sustainable and the farmers are treated equitably and paid fairly.

It is roasted to a medium roast, which ensures the least amount of the harmful acrylamides we talked about earlier.

Kion Coffee is packed in nitrogen-flushed bags that are sealed to ensure the highest levels of antioxidants and the freshest coffee you can find!

Pah: Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Coffee

Another health-harming toxin to look out for in your morning brew is Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons .

So what is the problem with PAHs? They’re why health experts recommend you limit the amount of charred foods you consume – PAHs are classified as probable carcinogens by the US government and short term exposure to PAHs is linked to cancer.

When it comes to coffee, PAHs are created when coffee is roasted at high temperatures for long periods of time. Unfortunately, this means that dark roasts commonly contain higher levels of PAH.

Here are a couple things you can do to reduce your exposure to PAHs:

  • Choose a medium or light roast bean
  • Look for coffee that is roasted in a smokeless machine to reduce harmful compounds like PAHs
  • Choose coffee that tests for the absence of PAHs

What Its Like To Drink Bulletproof Coffee Every Morning For Two Weeks

Ostensibly, these products are designed to give you energy and help you shed a few pounds from your waistline, as long as you adhere to a Paleo-esque, zero-carb lifestyle. For the uninitiated, Bulletproof Coffee is essentially grass-fed butter, MCT oil, and coffee brewed with specially treated beans that then get thrown into a blender. The resulting slurry is like a warm milkshake. It does not taste bad.

Anyway, back to the article: Gizmodos Brent Rose does a great job of digging through some of Aspreys more dubious claims. One that caught my eye was the Bulletproof® Upgraded Coffee beans, which are said to undergo a special treatment process to strip them of mycotoxins. Heres Rose:

Indeed, mycotoxin levels in American coffee beans arent nearly the insidious plague that Asprey might have you believe. Yet a bag of Bulletproof® Upgraded Coffee on Aspreys website, for example, sells for $18.95. A tipster who claims to have a friend who works at a small roaster called Portland Roasting Coffee told me that you can procure an awfully similar bag from Portland Roasting Coffees website, where Asprey allegedly sources his beans from, and get the same thing for less than $10. It is very good coffee.

For what its worth, similar allegations about Bulletproofs dubious benefits have been floating around on the Internet for years now, and Asprey has personally responded to them on BPC forums and elsewhere. Heres one example:

Ethical Bean Coffee Sweet Espresso

Beans: ArabicaOrigins: South and Central America

As you might have guessed from the name, Ethical Bean Coffee is a company that’s devoted to organic brews.

They only buy from fair trade farmers who harvest their coffee under natural, shaded canopies, and all of their beans are free of chemicals, preservatives and synthetic fertilizers.

As for their Sweet Espresso product, it’ll be a great pick-me-up when you’re craving something sweet. You can taste everything from toffee to baker’s chocolate in its flavor profile, and all of its notes are grounded by a full-body brew made from a dark roast.

You can add milk to make it even sweeter and creamier, but this is entirely optional. It depends on how you take your coffee in the mornings.

Another great thing about the Sweet Espresso flavor is that it can be brewed in drip machines as well as espresso makers.

It’s pre-ground, so you’ll have to be careful with pouring and spilling, but you can make it work with just about any coffeemaker that you have in your kitchen. You don’t need a fancy machine to get your next fix!

Whats the Bottom Line?

Ethical Coffee Bean is a guilt-free way to indulge your sweet tooth. It’ll provide the sugary notes and caffeine content of an excellent espresso, but it’ll also be fully organic and good for the environment. Everybody wins with Ethical Coffee Bean!

What Are The Cleanest Coffee Brands

Starbucks offers free coffee to frontline workers through May 31

QUESTION: What are the cleanest coffee brands? I am looking for coffee thats free of pesticides, but also free of mycotoxins. Jules F

ANSWER: People choose clean and/or organic coffee brands for many different reasons. Perhaps they want to know that their money is going towards a sustainable and environmentally friendly product. Maybe they just enjoy the taste of organic coffees more than big corporate coffee. Or maybe its all about getting a clean, unadulterated product that you can trust. In your case we know youre looking for organic and mycotoxin free.

But what does clean mean in general, when it comes to coffee? Just to be clear, were not talking about dirty coffee beans, as in, covered in actual dirt. Clean coffee is coffee that was grown without chemical pesticides. Getting pesticide free coffee is one of the main reasons why people buy organic. If you purchase organic coffee, you can be sure that you are getting a product free from a long list of chemical pesticides, which includes Endosulfan, Paraquat dichloride, Permethrin, and more.

Another seal to look for is the Bird-Friendly label from the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center. This seal ensures that your coffee was grown in accordance with the Smithsonians suggested outlines on using shade for coffee growing habitats, which requires 40% shade coverage even after pruning of the growing area.

Mold In Coffee During Roasting

So, you think mold only grows on green coffee beans? Think again. The mold toxins can also form in the roastery. There are multiple steps when roasting the beans.

Each step offers mold opportunities to grow in warm temperatures and plenty of time to multiply, especially when there’s no airflow .

And if that isnt scary enough, heres one more mold-maker: heat shock proteins . When subjected to high heat, they can undergo changes that render them toxic mold growth promoters.

Well, this is certainly exciting news for our taste buds!

But the fact that there are coffee mold spores present isnt necessarily a health issue. Not all mold is harmful to your health.

However, certain types of mold produce nasty compounds called mycotoxins: the nasty culprits behind potential health issues.

Waitmy Coffee Is Dirty Why Clean & Organic Coffee Is So Important

According to the National Coffee Association, roughly 62% of Americans drink coffee daily. You are my people! And maybe this is just me trying to justify my own addiction, but there are numerous health benefits to consuming it:

  • Rich in polyphenol antioxidants
  • Associated with improved liver health
  • Boosts physical and cognitive function
  • Can help you live longer

Of course, not everyone reacts well to coffee and its best to drink it in moderation. But I can personally attest that it makes me a better and happier human being.

What Is Ochratoxin Where Is It A Problem

Ochratoxin is a class of several different chemicals belonging to the fungal toxins known as mycotoxins. Unlike other fungal toxins, such as mushroom poison, mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by mold, and we unintentionally ingest them in food.

Mycotoxins are documented to cause substantial suffering by disease and death in humans and animals, but the real impact is likely far more than we currently comprehend. In developed countries, with our plethora of food and the diversity of our appetites, we avoid the acute and disastrous effects mold toxins have today in the developing world. However, despite our current comforts, mycotoxins are still in our food supply. Are these toxins affecting your health and your performance?

There are two main forms of contamination of agricultural products by ochratoxin, known as ochratoxin A and ochratoxin B. In shorthand these are referred to as OTA and OTB in most scientific literature. Ochratoxin B is less common and less toxic than OTA. OTA is produced most often by two Penicillium species on poorly stored cereals or by a wide range of Aspergilli in variety of products, including wine and coffee . .

Aspergillus ochraceus in particular contaminates dried foods, but more importantly seems to be the culprit along with A. niger for contaminating green coffee beans . Because of this, it is well established that OTA and other mycotoxins are present in green and roasted coffee beans .

    Instant And Ground Coffee

Nescafe is a huge multinational brand of coffee owned by Nestle.

We commend Nescafe partnering with for the Rainforest Alliance, the Sustainable Agriculture Network , and the Common Code for the Coffee Community , but they do not offer organic certified coffees. Therefore, their coffee may contain chemicals and mold.

They only offer instant coffees, ground coffee, or pods so again, freshness is a concern.

What Kind Of Mold Grows In Coffee

Coffee beans harbor toxic mold known as Ochratoxin A and Aflatoxin B1. Generally, high doses of OTA and Afla B1 are pretty bad for your health because they are extremely toxic to your kidneys, and they suppress your immune system. Additionally, it is also a carcinogen. The good thing is that the levels of OTA detected in coffee are too low to cause you harm. So, you shouldnt worry much about your safety.

Starbucks wants to remove paper cups

Now that youre educated on all things clean coffee, its finally time for the FUN part! I admit, I have known about clean coffee for a while but still chose to just buy from local coffee shops .

But Ive actually been dealing with some gut issues and trying to avoid yeast so I wanted to up my coffee game and find ones that are beyond organic!

Plus, some of my readers have asked for recommendations. And I am honored! I am picky about coffee, which my husband can attest to. You will not catch me drinking Folgers or gas station coffee. Im very annoying to travel with because we HAVE to go out of our way to find THE best local coffee shops

While youre reading this, keep in mind that we might have different taste preferences for coffee! I gravitate towards a light roast thats bright, vibrant, and fruity. Light roasts tend to have more of an acidic kick, too. But rest assured, if youre a dark roast lover, there are plenty of options for you here!

To Put This In Perspective: Mycotoxins Are In Other Crops In Larger Amounts Its Ubiquitous

I know we covered a lot about mycotoxins, but to the average person, this isnt going to matter. Coffee is actually on the lighter end of food that is contaminated with mycotoxins. Grains and peanuts are far more problematic.

The American Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that 25% of the food crops in the world are affected by mycotoxins, primarily aflatoxins. The crops that are most affected are corn, cottonseed, and peanuts. But you are also getting a dose in coffee beans, beans, rice, tree nuts, and wheat.

One of the other problems with mycotoxins is they get into other parts of the food supply through animal consumption. If the dairy cow consumes hay or other crops with mycotoxins, then they will pass through to the milk & meat. The same goes for eggs & chicken.

    Is Starbucks Coffee Fair Trade

    Yes,

Starbucks is one of the biggest purchasers of fair trade certified coffee in the world. That is an undisputable fact. This is not to say that fair trade coffee is exploitation free. I can only comment on my own experience from 10 years ago and comments made by Thai coffee farmers.

They were, to be quite frank, not at all pleased with the low price paid by the company. Some felt it was rather exploitative given the price paid for a cup of coffee in their outlets.
