How To Treat Black Mold On Trees

Does Sooty Mold Spread

How to Get Rid of Black Sooty Mold Naturally with Dish Soap

Sooty mold is a fungal disease that can spread to any area of an infected plant that is coated with honeydew. Honeydew is the sweet, sticky substance that is secreted onto plants from small, sucking insects such as aphids, whiteflies, scale, and mealybugs. Large infestations of these pests can lead to plants covered in honeydew. Sooty mold fungal spores adhere to the leaves of infected plants by sticking to the honeydew on the surface of the foliage. Sooty mold fungus then quickly spreads to all of the areas of the plant where honeydew is present.

To kill and remove sooty mold fungus from affected plants, destroying the pests responsible for the infection is first and foremost. After the pest infestation is contained and destroyed, sooty mold can then be removed from the affected plants. If sooty mold removal was successful, the plant should remain free of any signs of the fungus. Sooty mold cannot spread without the presence of honeydew, so if the mold starts to come back, that means that the pests that caused the fungus are still present.

Ants Are A Garden Alarm

A colony of aphids will leave loads of excrement on the leaves. Ants seek out that as their food source. Ants cannot and do not pierce into the leaves of plants. They eat the honeydew.

The relationship between ants and aphids is symbiotic. They rely on each other for survival.

Ants need the honeydew for food. Aphids benefit from their protection.

If the colony of aphids is big enough for an ant colony to warrant protecting them, they will fight off ladybugs and even lacewings to secure their food supply.

As the ants do not eat aphids, and the honeydew gets dropped, it lands on any plants under the tree canopy.

A trail of ants can signal that there are aphids or another sap-sucking insect nearby.

Since ants feed on the honeydew and not the sap, there will be ant trails beneath aphid colonies.

Crepe Myrtle Aphids Treatment

Luckily, very few insects attack crepe myrtles, but they can cause serious problems when they do. According to experts at the Clemson University Cooperative Extensions Home and Garden Information Center, the most common is the crepe myrtle aphid, which is especially common in South Carolina.

Aphids secrete a sugary substance called honeydew on the leaves of the tree, which can thoroughly coat it. A particular type of black fungus feeds on the honeydew, and it can cover and then destroy the leaves. Without its leaves, the tree cant properly make food and will eventually die. If you have a bad infestation of crepe myrtle aphids, wash the honeydew and fungus from your plant using mild dish soap diluted in plenty of water.

However, because aphids are very difficult to control with insecticides, using one isnt a viable solution. The best way to protect against aphids is to attract their natural predators by cultivating plants they like. Natural predators of aphids include ladybugs, green lacewings and parasitic wasps. As unpleasant as some of these insects can be, they have their purposes. In addition to aphids, Japanese beetles can threaten crepe myrtles. The best way to deal with Japanese beetles is to set a trap. Just be sure you dont set it too close to your trees. Otherwise, you may accidentally draw the beetles in.

What Parts Of The Trunk Are Most Susceptible To Mold

Getting rid of Black Sooty Mold!

The lower trunk is the most susceptible to mold and mildew because it is closer to the ground and often has more moisture. The upper trunk is less likely to be affected because it is further from the ground and has better airflow.

Also, the side of the trunk that is facing the ground is more likely to be affected than the side that is facing up. This is because the side facing the ground is less likely to receive direct sunlight, which can help to prevent mold growth.

The north side of the trunk is also more susceptible to mold because it is usually cooler and has less sunlight.

Obviously, this is the only case for the trees in the northern hemisphere. For trees in the southern hemisphere, the south-looking side of the tree will have less sunlight and be more susceptible to mold.

Identification And Symptoms Of Sooty Mold Fungus

Identifying sooty mold fungus is fairly easy. If you notice a dark gray to black sooty coating on the foliage and fruit of a plant, shrub, or tree, chances are, sooty mold fungus is the culprit. If you notice the presence of honeydew on the leaves, branches, and twigs of one of your plants, you may have time to keep the fungus from forming. If you notice the presence of aphids, mealy bugs, or other tiny insects on your plant, you might even be able to prevent the spread of honeydew by treating the plant for pests before they have a chance to coat the leaves with their sugary-sweet substance.

The symptoms of sooty black mold are simple and easy to see. The affected plants become covered in a sooty layer of gray or black grime. The mold is powdery and sticky and the layer is relatively thick. The dark color and the thickness of the fungal growth blocks photosynthesis, which keeps the chlorophyll from functioning properly, which can eventually cause the leaves to wither and die. Though the leaves of affected plants are sometimes casualties of sooty mold fungus, the plants, shrubs, and trees live on long after the fungal growth has come and gone. Soot can be removed, leaves can be regrown, and plants that have been the victims of major infestations can make miraculous recoveries with proper treatment.

Give Tree Enough Space

Trees planted too close together are more susceptible to mold because they cannot get enough sunlight. When trees are close together, they also create a microclimate that is more conducive to mold growth.

To prevent mold growth, make sure to plant trees at least 20 feet apart. This will give them enough room to grow and receive the sunlight they need.

How To Control Sooty Mold

In home gardens, sooty mold is an unsightly cosmetic condition that usually wont cause permanent damage to your plants especially those that are well established.

If you control the insects that produce honeydew, you cut off the food source for the fungi and the sooty mold will typically disappear on its own.

Treatment with fungicides is not recommended. Fungicide applications may kill the fungi and reduce the spread, but will not remove the black coating from the plant or prevent a future outbreak.

The Effects Of Honeydew On All Plant Leaves

Aphids and similar sap-sucking pests pierce the leaves to feed on the sugary sap. The sap inside leaves is just like sugary water. It is a rich source of carbs for soft-bodied insects.

As Newtons law taught us: what goes in, must come out. Sap goes in, honeydew is the excrement.

This is a sticky substance that coats the leaves. Aphids do not poop where they feed. They drop their droppings to lower leaves away from their feeding ground.

The Sticky Connection Between Aphids and Sooty Mold

Mold spores are typically arent harmful to trees. But if there are people and animals in the vicinity that are allergic to mold, it can cause respiratory problems.

That said, what is observed as mold on a tree can be other organisms that are harmful.

Also, if mold growth overtakes a large portion of the trees trunk, it can cause the tree to become structurally unsound. This is because the hyphae that mold uses to penetrate the bark can also damage the trees vascular system.

A tree with a large amount of mold growth may eventually die if the mold continues to spread and the tree is unable to get the nutrients it needs.

In some cases, mold cover on a tree can actually increase fruit or flower production. The increased production is due to the fact that the mold and mildew are providing extra nutrients for the tree.

However, increased production is not always a good thing. In fact, it damages trees by taxing their energy and resources.
