Good question. In most scenarios, a clearance sample is collected within the containment/ remediation zone. This is to prove the mold spore counts have returned to normal levels. Occasionally an additional sample is collected from outside the remediation zone to check for cross contamination. I cant think of a scenario where one would only collect a sample from the adjacent rooms and not within original remediation zone.

In many cases, very short-term sampling for mold spores is performed. However, the results may not represent actual exposures. Spore counts and culture results are often included in indoor air quality reports. These do not capture the full range of exposures.

What building occupants react to is unknown. It may be:

  • Compounds released into the air when wet building materials break down.

We have found thorough visual inspections and/or detection of problem areas via musty odors are more reliable. NIOSH uses these methods, which have shown association with health risks in buildings that have indoor environmental complaints.

Concentration bursts of mold spores:

An example of a concentration burst of Aspergillus sp. spores occurred during our inspection and monitoring of a college library with many moldy books in its basement. Initially, though there was a large area of visible green mold on many books on shelves in the library basement, while conditions there were still quite damp the airborne Aspergillus sp. spore levels were rather low.

But when the college brought in an “expert” who installed commercial dehumidifiers the airborne Aspergillus sp. skyrocketed. As the humidity dropped the fungus responded by releasing spores.
