Tips For Cleaning Mold

  • Remember that your goal is not to kill the mold spores, but to remove them. When they have been removed completely they cannot grow back.
  • Ventilate, ventilate, ventilate! Ventilation is important during cleaning, so that any disturbed spores exit the building. Close and tape off doors to the rest of the house and use a box fan in a window pointing out while cleaning. This will prevent spores from invading the rest of the home, and remove them from the air of the room to be cleaned.
  • Be sure to spray and then wipe all surfaces with a damp rag. Dry wiping will disturb spores and send them into the air! Airborne spores can regrow in new locations, and cause even more mold to grow. Mold spores are not visible to the naked eye, so be sure to cover all surfaces with your cleaner of choice, even if they look clean.
  • Do NOT use a vacuum to clean moldunless you have a vacuum with a HEPA filter. HEPA stands for high-efficiency particulate air, which means the filter can stop most particles of dust, pet dander, allergens, etc. that are 0.3 microns or larger and keep them from being put back into the air. The HEPA filter should be changed periodically to increase efficiency.Use with caution as mycotoxins may not be filtered out even when using a HEPA vacuum.Remember that you will eventually have to empty the vacuum, and it will be filled with the mold. Vacuuming is not the best method of removal.

Reader Question: Is It Ok To Apply A Sealer Or Wood Preservative Over Black Stains On Plywood Roof Sheathing

Last September I had a new garage roof fitted and within 7 months the plywood used inside developed black mould spots. The company that fitted the roof said it was caused by condensation. Having wiped the roof with a mild detergent I was left with black stains on the plywood. I would like to know if it would be ok to put a wood preservative on it despite the stains â donât want it to come back.

Would appreciate your advise? â

Reply:

Yes you can apply a wood preservative, leaving cosmetic black stains under the preservative.

But if you do not find and fix the cause of condensation Iâd still expect future trouble. You may find stains or mold appearing on other wood or mold-friendly surfaces in the same area if indoor moisture levels are high, or if there is building insulation present that may become mold contaminated.

Treat Wood To Prevent Reinfestation

A wood mold infestation may recur in a structure as long as conditions remain conducive to fungus growth. Water damage or high relative humidity levels provide the moisture and wood contains cellulose, which is a rich source of nutriment for mold. While it is crucial to take measures to stop leaks or lower excessive moisture, treating wood can also prevent a problem from recurring.

If a single application of vinegar does not get rid of mold, consider reapplying this treatment at a stronger concentration, up to full 5% or 6% strength. In some cases, Borax, an alkaline mineral salt cleaner, may be a better choice. This substance gets absorbed under the surface of the wood. Once wood treated with Borax or vinegar has completely dried, furniture or building materials are ready to be treated with a mold-resistant finish, primer and paint.

Mold spores can be found nearly everywhere on earth. But finding black mold is unnerving because of its potential danger, so you want to get rid of black mold as soon as possible. When the spores are exposed to moderate temperatures and moisture, they begin to grow and multiply. Our homes, especially bathrooms and damp basements, can provide nearly ideal environments for mold to thrive.

The good news is that not all mold, even the ones that appear to be black in color, are dangerous. There are three categories of common molds found in households that can have health effects:

  • Allergenic molds that can be safely removed by using disinfecting products
  • Pathogenic molds that can be controlled with disinfectants
  • Toxic molds that require professional treatment and disposal of all affected materials

What has become known as the dangerous black mold is Stachybotrys chartarum, a colony with a dark green or black slimy surface. It is most often found in homes or buildings that have been exposed to excessive amounts of water and humidity for an extended period of time, especially after a flood. S. chartarum produces trichothecenes, a type of mycotoxin. Exposure to S. chartarum could potentially lead to a wide range of respiratory health effects, though this has not yet been proven.

Use of fungicidal encapsulants may reduce but not eliminate the risk of future mold growth, primarily, or more lastingly because such encapsulants reduce the future uptake of moisture in the wood materials.

Fungicidal chemicals themselves can be expected to break down over time and should not be relied on as “mold proofing”.

Even in this case, in our OPINION the reasons to remove and replace roof sheathing and framing would normally be based on the condition of the roof framing and sheathing, not on the presence of mold or stains.
