By gathering the right supplies and following simple directions, you’ll be a rubber mold-making expert in no time.
My Experience With The Clone
I went through the steps more or less without a lot of fuss, but there are a couple things I will share with you that might alleviate some of your worries.
- When it comes to spilled molding powder, don’t worry about cleaning it up immediately. Let it harden and it will scrape off on its own extremely easily. This applies to the bowl you use as well, just a quick once over with a spoon once you’re done + a quick rinse and the bowl will be completely clean. Personally, I threw out any of the big chunks of molding powder instead of putting them down the sink. Whatever fell onto the floor was a simple sweep job away from being clean, so don’t lose your mind and please try to clean it up while it’s still goopy.
- The same applies to any spilled silicone. I didn’t use a disposable bowl when I mixed the bags together and was at first stressed that I had to diligently wash out the still unhardened silicone from my wife’s favorite mixing bowl. I later realized it would be smarter to just let the clone harden and peel it all off in one fell swoop and that’s exactly what I did
The finished product is surprisingly pretty bang on to the real thing. I will say that the final product is very rigid and hard, it is by no means a soft and plush sex toy. If you really want it to be as close to the real thing it’s mimicking though, I would guess that this is desirable anyways. And when I mean its bang on, I mean down to the wrinkles.

How Its Supposed To Work
My fantastic confidence in this endeavor and product waned considerably when I unfurled the poster-size directions. The four simple steps had transformed into more than a dozen, and the incredible specificity of each step had me in an immediate state of panic.
For example, the molding powder must be mixed with water that is exactly 90 degrees Fahrenheit. You must mix the powder and 90-degree water for exactly 45 seconds, then pour the mixture into the tube as quickly as possible.
How To Make Your Silicone Mold
First, you will need a good molding medium. We like Mold Star 16 Fast by Smooth-On because its simple to use, cures fast, and doesnt require any degassing.
Its also a good middle ground in terms of hardness, and from there you can try harder molding mediums like the Mold Star 30 to see what you prefer to work with.
While it isnt optimal, if you wish to keep your price to a minimum, you could always use DragonSkin 10 A or 20 A for both your toys and your mold, but anything softer will make molding your toys extremely difficult.
Next, you will need a container to hold your mold as it cures.
You can use a variety of containers here, may it be smooth airtight boxes, water jugs, or anything else thatll fit your toys and then some. Just make sure the container you use can contain viscous liquids without leaking or breaking.
Our favorite method is building our own custom Boxes with Legos.
This makes freeing your silicone molds much easier and your boxes infinitely recyclable. Just make sure the bottom of your box lands on the smooth side of your lego blocks to avoid any issues.

Of course, when molding, you wont have the box on its side like this and youll want to have it standing with the hole facing up.

How To Color Your Silicone Sex Toys
Now were finally at the step of actually making a DIY dildo!
But before any of this, youll most likely want to color your silicone to a color of your liking.
To achieve this, you will need some good pigments like the great Silc Pig by Smooth-On.
A container or a cheap sampler kit will be enough to make tons of dildos and mix pretty much any color youll need. So a little investment really goes a long way here!
Its also worth noting that the more youll mix, the brighter and more saturated the colors will get.
Smooth-On also makes a pretty cool glow-in-the-dark pigment called the Glow Worm.
It comes in green and blue and, just like the Silk pig, the more you put in, the bigger the glow youll get.
Cosmetic Mica is another great option if youre looking for more colors, sparkles, or a real deepblack.
Just make sure youre buying a body-safe Mica since not all of them are good for internal use.
The Best Silicone For Sex Toys
The only type of silicone safe for penetration is platinum cure silicone and the most popular supplier amongst indie sex toy makers is Smooth-On.
Now, Smooth-On makes all sorts of silicones that are unsafe for sex, so make sure you double-check before investing in buckets of it.
Another important thing to consider is the hardness of your DIY sex toys.

The most important thing to consideris that the harder the silicone, the more likely youll have to watch for bubbles getting trapped in your toys.
Unless you have a way to get rid of the bubbles you could be left with toys filled with little imperfections.
But if you want to stay on the safe side, the most popular options are Ecoflex for softer toys and Dragon Skin for harder but still realistically soft toys.
Ecoflex comes in 00-10, 00-20 and 00-30 hardness.
This means that bubbles will have less of a tendency of showing up in your finished product, so it is perfect for someone trying to keep the cost of equipment to a minimum.
00-10 is usually out of the question because it is so soft you wont be able to use it for insertion. But it could be used as an outside layer of a dual-density toy.
Dragon Skin comes in multiple hardnesses, but 10 A and 20 A should be the only ones youll ever need.

Squarepegtoyss Peg Away Putty
This innovative product is probably the most fun way to make and/or modify your silicone toys.
Its essentially a silicone putty that, once activated, will adhere to any other platinum cure silicone, allowing you to customize your toys to your liking.
This, of course, doesnt stop you from making your own DIY sex toys from scratch, but this will drive the price way up since youll need much more putty to achieve this. If youre unsure as to how much you will need for making your own toys, SquarePegToys® states that 1/3 of an OZ of putty is about the size of a Bic pen.
So whether you want to add texture to your dildos, bump up your prostate toys for extra stimulation and comfort or make your own toys, this putty can do it all.

How To Mix Your Colors
Mixing colors is a lot like mixing any other type of paint.
Our favorite method is to color only Part A with the pigments. This will not only leave you with more time to color your silicone sex toys but itll also ensure a uniform mix of the two parts when the time comes.
If you want, you can go crazy with your pour methods to create marbled designs, gradients, or any of that fancy stuff! Its really not that complex once you see how colors interact with each other.
Once you have your mold handy and youre ready to mix the colored part A to part B, proceed just like with the molding process.
Optional Pro Step: At this point, if youre using a Silicone with a high viscosity, you might want to do some silicone degassing to get rid of as many bubbles as possible.

This step is exactly like when you poured your mold except it is now mandatory to spray Mann Ease Release 200 into your mold beforehand. Otherwise, the two silicones will bond and youll have to make a new mold from scratch.

How To Clean A Clone
Soft plastic, hard plastic, jelly, rubber, Cyberskin are all porous materials, meaning that small particles and bacteria can penetrate the surface. This makes it impossible to completely clean these types of materials.
Therefore, it is recommended that you use a condom with these types of toys, especially if you are sharing them. Clean these toys with mild soapy water and dry gently with a towel. These materials are more easily damaged, so be sure to be gentle and make sure your toys are completely dry before storing.
Silicone, glass, stainless steel and some hard plastics can all be washed using a mild soap and warm water. Just be careful if your toy contains electrical parts.

Pouring In The Silicone
Now you have to mix the 2 jars of silicone together in a disposable cup using the wooden stirrer. I didnt have a disposable cup to hand, so I used a cheap refillable Starbucks cup that I didnt mind throwing away.Once I poured this mixed-together silicone into the mold, it quickly became obvious that there Youre supposed to leave about 1 inch of space at the top, but mine had a good couple of inches spare.
