What Is Mould And What Causes It
Quite simply, mould is caused by the growth of a certain fungi in your home. What you see on your wall is the formation of spores. These spores are dust-like and can become airborne, which then seeds more patches of fungi in other parts of your room or home.
Conditions need to be right for mould to grow. You normally find it in rooms that are very humid or have issues with excess moisture. Possibly from damp coming in from the outside of your home, but sometimes from a leaking pipe or similar. Condensation is the main cause of mould growth.
The most common places to find mould are bathrooms and kitchens because of the excess steam, which normally condenses on the coolest wall / window and keeps it wet for long periods.
As a decorator, I tend to come up against walls full of mould when working for landlords. This might be for a few reasons, including properties being empty for weeks or months at a time, poor ventilation, people drying their clothes inside the house, or cheap paint being used to decorate.
What Causes Mould On Walls
Essentially, mould grows in damp conditions and this moisture can build up as a result of activity inside your home. Were all familiar with the steam and condensation caused by a long, hot shower but if youve got a powerful bathroom extractor fan, and you open windows frequently, this usually dissipates. However, for bathrooms with poor ventilation or those lacking a window, excess moisture can quickly become problematic.
Similarly in kitchens, moisture from cooking such as boiling pans on the hob can quickly build up in the air. And if it doesnt have anywhere to go it can settle on cold walls, making them damp which can lead to mould growth. And, while it should come as no surprise that bathrooms and kitchens are prime sources of moisture, you might not have considered one of the hidden causes of damp in our homes that is so often overlooked: drying laundry. The water from the freshly-washed clothes drying on your airer or radiators has to go somewhere, but in the depths of winter, when all your windows are closed, it can build up in the air causing condensation on the walls and, before you know it, a mould problem.
Vinegar Kills Most Types Of Mold
White distilled vinegar in standard 5% or cleaning 6% concentrations kills approximately 80% of mold species. Depending on the finish of a wall, you may prefer to use a diluted mixture of one part vinegar to two parts water. It may be necessary to reapply full-strength vinegar or vinegar-based solutions to kill mold and prevent regrowth.
Once surfaces are dry, consider sealing walls with oil-based primer or pigmented shellac. Add a layer of paint that contains mildewcide to discourage future infestations. If mold is also growing behind walls or in insulation, it may be necessary to tear out and replace drywall before taking any mold-proofing measures.
If mold keeps growing after a vinegar treatment, you may be dealing with a species that falls into the approximately 18% of known mold species that are not affected by acetic acid. You may need to use a fungicide. Consider consulting with mold remediation professionals to ensure that mold does not remain a problem.
Infestations that produce mycotoxins pose unique dangers. These harmful substances are not destroyed by vinegar or any other cleaning solution. Activated carbon air filters and ozone treatments that require evacuation may be necessary to eliminate byproducts of toxic mold.

Cleaning After Water Damage
First, make sure you know where thewater came from. If its not a pipe, you may proceed to clean rightaway. Wear rubber gloves and clothing appropriate for cleaning.
Start by removing items that are in theway and that may be a food source for mold. Any items that are beyondrepair just throw out in the garbage.
Saving items is a bit risky. If youwant to save something, take it out of the house and make sure thatits completely dry before bringing it back, it may be the cause offurther issues.
Clean any water that is left in theroom, its very important that the area is completely dry. Once youmake sure that the area is dry, you may proceed to dehumidify.
Leaving the windows open will do justfine, however, if you feel like it, it would be great to use anelectric dehumidifier. You cant put a price on safety.
Do all this, and you should be fine, wemay move on.

You can, but mold spores can travel in the air when cleaning, so youll want to limit your exposure by wearing protective gear. Wear long rubber gloves to protect your hands and forearms. Its also best to wear eye protection, like goggles, to prevent bleach or other cleaners from splashing in your eyes, especially when removing mold from ceilings or overhead areas.
If the mold problem is severe and more than a few spots, it could be a sign of a bigger moisture problem. If the area is widespread and larger than approximately a 2 x 2 foot area, you’ll want to call in a pro to have it removed safely.

Dangerous Mold Vs Mildew

Mildew begins as a gray or white powdery colony. It will turn black or brown if not removed promptly and often looks like soil accumulation. To test if the surface is covered with mildew or just dirt, dab the stain with a cotton swab dipped in household chlorine bleach. If the stain lightens or disappears after two or three minutes, it’s mildew. If not, it’s probably just dirt.
If you detect a musty smell anywhere in your home, then you have a high concentration of mold. It can be coming from a hamper filled with damp towels, from a damp crawlspace under your home, or from carpets that have mold growing in the padding. If you smell that odor, it’s definitely time to take action to get rid of the problem.
All mildew is mold, but not all molds are mildew. Mildew can discolor and slowly harm surfaces but there are much more dangerous molds that can damage the structure of your home. If you see a black or green mold that is fuzzy or slimy and the drywall or wood underneath is soft or crumbly, there is irreversible rot, and the mold and the damaged surfaces must be removed immediately.

Vinegar Is Less Harsh Than Bleach
Bleach is caustic and can cause eye, skin and respiratory irritation, even when diluted. Vinegar is a mild solution of acetic acid in water that is less likely to cause irritation or wear down wall surfaces.
Vinegar has a pungent sour odor immediately after application. If you want to mask the smell of vinegar, consider adding a few drops of essential oil to a cleaning solution. Many people prefer to use citrus essential oils for this purpose.
You should still wear personal protective equipment, such as gloves, when working with vinegar. A mold-rated mask or respirator can also provide protection from fumes as well as spores, microbial volatile organic compounds and mycotoxins.
Keep in mind that any cleaning solution can cause a chemical reaction that discolors or causes the premature wear of wall finishes. For this reason, you may want to test full-strength or diluted vinegar cleaning solutions in a small area that is unlikely to draw notice. If vinegar kills the mold to which it is applied while preserving the appearance of the wall underneath, it should be effective for a full mold cleanup.
Should full-strength white vinegar also be too harsh for cleaning certain wall materials, consider a diluted mixture of one part vinegar to two parts water, a solution of one cup of Borax or baking soda dissolved in one gallon of water or a mixture of one part hydrogen peroxide to two parts water.

To make the job of removing old wallpaper easier, consider using a steamer to loosen the wallpaper adhesive. These machines are easy to rent from many home improvement stores and relatively simple to operate.
To remove wallpaper from plaster, pour water into the steamer reservoir by following the manufacturers instructions and let it heat for half an hour. Put on a pair of rubber gloves to protect your hands from hot water drips.
Work in small areas, and hold the steamer on the wallpaper surface to allow the steam to penetrate and soften the glue. Scrape the paper in sections as you move along the wall.

Can You Paint Over Mold
