How To Get Rid Mold In Shower

How To Clean Mold From Bathroom Ceiling

Shower Mold Removal – Super Easy Cleaning Hack

If you see mold spreading across your bathroom ceiling, you need to do two things. First, identify the source. Is there a leak above the bathroom? If so, eliminate the leak before cleaning mold from the bathroom ceiling. If the mold is caused by moisture in the bathroom, consider adding an exhaust fan or running a dehumidifier to reduce heat and dampness.

The next step is to clean the mold from the bathroom ceiling. Start by spraying the area with a vinegar solution. If the ceiling is coated with paint or another finish that allows for scrubbing, spray the vinegar directly on the ceiling and wipe with a clean rag. If not, you will need to scrape off and replace the affected ceiling area. Removing a textured ceiling covered in mold is a job better left to mold removal specialists, as it requires special ventilation masks and protective clothing.

What Didnt Remove Mold

When we first moved to our current house, I did a little research and experimented with a number of methods touted to remove mold from shower caulk. Im sure there are even more techniques than the ones listed below, but heres what did not work for me:

  • Saturating the affected area with straight ammonia. This may be incredibly effective, but personally, I detest the smell too much to even try. And since I often use bleach when cleaning I figured it was better just to stay away from this one completely since combining bleach and ammonia produces toxic gas.
  • Spraying with vinegar. This method proved completely worthless for my situation, although I believe it has some merit as a mold preventative. I do love vinegar for glass cleaning though! Take a look at this DIY cleaner I use.
  • Making a baking soda paste with water. I found this only minimally effective on tough mold. Baking soda is a great natural cleaner, though, and the gentle abrasiveness was good for cleaning the tile and some mildewy spots.
  • Combining baking soda and vinegar. Lets talk about this for a minute because I see this combination recommended all the time online. Baking soda and vinegar cancel each other out. This is just basic chemistry, yall. Combining baking soda and vinegar produces carbon dioxide and salty water .

What Causes Mold In Showers

RMR

There are many reasons why shower walls become infested with mold, but there are some common culprits. Poor ventilation in the shower area, which helps trap moisture, can leave an environment where mold can grow. A good exhaust fan or bathroom fan can help with ventilation and black mold prevention.

Some other causes of common household molds are leaks, wet clothes, or condensation. Water leaking behind or around bathroom walls or windows can damage wood frame construction, allowing mold spores to feed on organic materials like wood.

Having proper ventilation in your bathroom and maintaining the cleanliness of the room are great ways to help prevent future mold growth. But, even the best efforts cant fully prevent bathroom mold, so what do you do if you find mold on your tile and shower walls?

What Kills Mold Better Bleach Or Hydrogen Peroxide

There is some debate over which one of these two common household products is more effective at killing mold. Both bleach and hydrogen peroxide can be effective, but they each have their own pros and cons. Bleach is a strong chemical that can kill mold quickly. However, it can also be corrosive and harmful to surfaces. Hydrogen peroxide is a weaker chemical than bleach, but it is less likely to harm surfaces.

Ultimately, the choice of which product to use depends on your personal preference and the situation. If you are trying to kill mold on a surface that is sensitive to chemicals, hydrogen peroxide may be a better choice. If you are trying to kill mold quickly, bleach may be a better choice.

    Vinegar And Baking Soda

Many of you probably consider vinegar and baking soda an indefatigable team. That may be true for other cleaning jobs. However, you may want to use it as a backup or finishing touch for this project.

Despite its reputation as a natural fungicide, vinegar came up short against two typical strains of household molds. It had little to no effect on inhibiting or stopping growth .

    How to Use It:

    • Add half a cup of baking soda to one cup of vinegar.

Where Can Mould Form And How Do I Remove It

How you remove mould can depend on where its located. It can often be found on surfaces like tiles, grout, sealant or a shower curtain. You can remove mould with various home-made cleaning solutions or with one bought from a shop.

    MouldCleaning Solutions: Buying vs Making

When it comes to removing mould, you can create your own cleaning solutions:

    • Non-toxic: Vinegar is a great option for killing mould. It may smell unpleasant, but it wont have the toxicity of bleach. Pour it straight onto the spores or use a spray bottle. Try mixing it with water with a ratio of 2:1, leave for 30 minutes before wiping.
    • Borax: A natural insecticide and fungicide, this solution mixes sodium tetraborate decahydrate – or baking soda – with water. It doesnt need to be rinsed off and can prevent mould from growing. You can buy baking soda in many supermarkets.
    • Bleach: The heavy-duty and last-resort option. Bleach will kill mould on showers and tiles etc, but it is a toxic substance, so take great care when using. Mix it with water at a ratio of 1:10. Rinse away afterwards if children or pets are around.

If are unsure about these mixtures, you can buy ready-made cleaning solutions and mould removers from supermarkets. The benefit of store-bought products is that you dont have to worry about mixing substances, you can be sure of their measurements. However, most are bleach-based, so you will need to be aware of any fumes.
