To avoid cracking, dryness, and warping of the wood cutting board, its best to oil the board once a month. Luckily, this task only takes a few minutes. First, meticulously clean your cutting board, preferably using the lemon and salt method described above . Then dry the board thoroughly.

To oil the board, you need to use a product specifically formulated for wood cutting boards, such as Howard Products Cutting Board Oil or even food grade mineral oil . Be sure not to use olive or avocado oil.

Use a soft cloth or paper towel in circular motions to buff the oil into the wood cutting board. Apply a thin coat to the entire surface, front and back, as well as the sides. Let the oil soak for a few hours or even overnight.

How To Use Hydrogen Peroxide To Remove Stains From Plastic Cutting Board:

If chemicals like bleach arent for you, you can opt for something natural likeHydrogen Peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is a natural stain remover that can effectively remove tough stains if you let it rest properly. The steps of using hydrogen peroxide only are:

  • When using Hydrogen peroxide, always buy the 3% Hydrogen Peroxide solution. Theyre safe to the skin and easy to use.
  • Mix 2 parts of 3% Hydrogen peroxide in 1 part water and make a solution. The solution shouldnt be too thick that its hard to pour. Make sure you add enough water to wet the entire cutting board.
  • Put the solution in a spray bottle or simply pour it thoroughly over the board. Make sure every bit of it is wet, and no part is left dry.
  • Keep the cutting board at rest for at least 2 hours. Its better to keep it in the solution overnight. After youre done resting the board, youd see some visible differences already.
  • Now, wash the hydrogen peroxide away with detergent and water, similar to removing bleach. Once youre done, let it dry in a safe spot.
  • One additional step you can follow after cleaning is to remove all sorts of bacteria and odor. If you have a dishwasher, put it in the dishwasher in a hot cycle. This will make it as clean as new. However, if you dont have a dishwasher, you can give your dishwasher an optional scrub and clean as well.

WARNING: Although Hydrogen Peroxide isnt as harmful as bleach, its still reasonably corrosive. So, make sure you have your safety gear on when youre working.

Cutting Board Cleaning Method: Baking Soda Salt Vinegar And Hydrogen Peroxide

  • Total time: 10 minutes

The method: Kitchn has a proven method, which calls for two different steps that can be done anytime. First, soak the board in a white vinegar solution or spray it with a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Then, make a paste thats one part baking soda, one part salt, and one part water to scrub out surface stains.

How it went: Yes, this calls for quite a few ingredients, but theyre all things that were all likely to have on hand anyway. I actually liked that there were two different steps because you can do the soak or skip the soak, depending on how stained your board is. The scrub mixture ends up being the perfect consistency: thin enough to spread around on the stained cutting board, but not soupy. I usually know what to expect when using baking soda on a stain it takes a bit of elbow grease, but eventually the stain disappears. Im happy to report that this took a bit less effort than I had been expecting.

How To Clean Mold Off Wood Floor

Over time, wood floors can develop a build-up of dirt, grime, and mold. While regular sweeping and mopping can help to keep the surface clean, you may eventually need to give your floors a more thorough cleaning.

What Youll Need:

  • Polyurethane finish

Heres how to clean mold from wood floor:

  • Wear the correct safety gear. Professionals wear gloves, safety glasses, and a breathing mask when working with mold to help avoid contact and inhalation. You should too. Prepare your work area. Cover any nearby surfaces with a heavy-duty garbage bag.
  • Choose the appropriate mold and mildew cleaner. Youll need a chlorine bleach solution with a ratio of either 10:1 or 8:1 to water. Read through the instructions to ensure youre using the cleaner correctly.
  • Apply the mold and mildew cleaner. Pour the solution into a spray bottle. Spray the affected area and allow the cleaner to sit for the amount of time specified in the instructions. Use a microfiber cloth to wipe away mold. Scrub the mold away using a bristle brush in case any mold spores are left behind. Rinse the area with clean water and allow the area to dry completely.
  • Do not leave the bleach solution on the wood for more than 10 minutes. Doing so can damage the wood finish. Avoid contact with unaffected surfaces as well.

Allow the solution to dry once so it fully absorbs and kills off the mold at the root, rather than simply treating the surface. The once moldy boards will quickly be mitigated.

The method:In a small bowl, mix 3 to 4 tablespoons of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of dish soap , and 1 to 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide. Spread the mixture over the stain and let it sit overnight. Rinse and scrub with warm, soapy water.

How it went: By morning, the mixture had drawn bits of color from the stain to the surface. I rinsed the mixture off with warm water and was pleased to see that the stain had lightened significantly. Once I used dish soap for a general cleaning, even more of the stain came up. It didnt come up completely, but was definitely an impressively effective method for such a stubborn stain. Honestly, Id say this method and the next one should tie as the winners.

How To Maintain Bamboo Cutting Boards

how to remove mold from wood cutting board

The process for maintaining a bamboo cutting board is very similar to that used to maintain a wooden board:

  • Wipe food-grade mineral oil or beeswax over your dry boards exterior.
  • Allow the oil to sit for a few hours.
  • Wipe off excess oil or beeswax with a dry cloth.
  • Never use vegetable or olive oil to season a cutting board because these can become rancid over time.
  • But in addition to the steps above, you can also slice a lemon in half and rub it cut side down over the boards surface to freshen up the board between oil or beeswax treatments. The natural acidity of the lemon will help to break down any residue on your cutting board.
