How to Remove Mildew Mold Stains From Outdoor Cushions without Bleach

How do I get mold out of outdoor patio cushions?

There are different treatment options depending on the type of fabric the cushions are made of and brand. If they are made by Sunbrella®, there is great cleaning information on their website, which you can check out at . Note that for general mildew removal on machine launderable textiles, we recommend a solution of ¼ cup Clorox® Regular Bleach2 per gallon of water. Items should be fully submerged for 5 minutes, and then rinsed before finishing up with a hot water wash using detergent + 3/4 cup Clorox® Regular Bleach2. Sunbrella® recommends a more concentrated bleach solution for mildew removal, which actually matches our recommendation for mildew removal on exterior surfaces like vinyl siding. Since Sunbrella® fabrics are 100% polyester this makes sense.

For non-Sunbrella® fabrics, as long as they are 100% polyester the same solution should still be suitable I would just test a hidden part of the cushion first to be sure the fabric wont be damaged by a bleach solution. To do that, apply add 2 teaspoons Clorox® Regular Bleach2 to ¼ cup water and apply a drop of the solution to a hidden part of the cushion. Make sure the drop soaks into the fabric. Wait 1 minute and then blot dry. No color change means the cushions can be safely bleached.

  • Regular Exposure to sunlight Molds thrive in dark places. While you may like the position of your cushion outside, if there is minimal amount of sunlight reaching the cushion, molds will start to grow. The best thing to do is to adjust the position of your cushion to allow more sunlight to reach it.

Keep Cushions In An Airy Place

How to Clean Moldy Outdoor Cushions

Molds grow in an area with moisture. So to keep them out, you have them maintain proper airflow wherever you place your outdoor furniture cushions.

Also, exposing the cushions to sunlight will help keep them dry. Molds bloom in dark places. So, make sure the cushions are set in a proper position, where adequate sunlight can reach them.

This doesnt mean you should lay out the cushions in direct sunlight. The simmering heat can damage the foam material. Instead, let the cushions be placed under a shade to reduce the heat in a well ventilated area. And when the weather outside becomes too cold, its best to bring the cushions indoors.

Mold occurs on fabric, such as upholstered furniture, that is kept continually in dank, dark conditions. It can also happen if upholstered parts of the furniture, such as sofa cushions, are stored in plastic while theyre damp: Plastic does not allow fabric to breathe or air out. Getting rid of the mold requires several measures to remove both the mold and built-up moisture that contributes to the problem. The more airing out done after removing the mold, the less the upholstery will smell musty after cleaning.

  • Take the furniture outdoors on a dry, non-humid day. If youre unable to carry the entire piece of furniture outdoors, take the cushions, pillows or any removable elements outside. Cleaning upholstery outdoors helps keep the mold from traveling through the air indoors.

  • Brush off all visible mold or discolored specks on the upholstery using a dry scrub brush or broom. Give the entire fabric a good brushing while wearing a dust mask to avoid breathing in mold spores. If cleaning indoors, set the furniture atop newspaper to catch any powdery residue. Discard the paper carefully afterwards.

  • Vacuum the furniture thoroughly using an upholstery brush attachment. Allow the furniture to sit outdoors for several hours or even all day, if possible, to air out. Airing it out also helps dry any moisture trapped within the fabric or foam to help prevent additional mold.

Can I Power Wash Patio Cushions

If you are wondering whether you can use a power or pressure washer to clean your patio cushions, then I advise caution. Pressure washers are great for cleaning patios because they can penetrate and lift dirt with ease. However, the pressure can be too high for your patio cushions and you could damage the outer fabric.

If you are going to try pressure washing your cushions, dont hold the spray too close to the fabric. Add cleaning solution to the pressure washer for badly soiled cushions.

If you are worried that damage might occur, your next best option would be to machine wash the cushion covers. If the cushions are not machine washable or removable, you can surface wash the cushions with some dish soap and water. Then use an ordinary garden hose to rinse off the soap.
