Cleaning Tile : How to Remove Mold From Shower Tile

Mold and mildew can appear in any part of your home, and they can quickly spread if you dont treat the area and get rid of them on time. Although they can show up in any home area, its typically the most noticeable in your bathroom.

As mold and mildew need specific temperature, humidity, water, and oxygen requirements to grow and spread, our bathrooms make the perfect spot for them to thrive and prosper. Other than those requirements, mold also needs a surface where it can spread and digest food. Every time you take a shower but forget to vent out the bathroom, you create the ideal environmental conditions for the growth of mold spores.

Tips For Treating Mildew With White Vinegar And Baking Soda

Luckily, treating mildew with some common household items is normally a pretty quick and easy task. If youve noticed mildew in your bathroom, you can typically get rid of it using some white vinegar and baking soda. To do this, fill a spray bottle with white vinegar, spray the areas that are covered with mildew and let the white vinegar sit for a few hours.

Once the vinegar has sat for a couple of hours, use a moist cloth to scrub the mildew off of broad areas and a toothbrush to remove it from hard-to-reach spaces like corners. When youre done, rinse the entire area with water.

If any mildew still remains, make a paste that consists of three-parts baking soda and one-part water. Apply the paste to any remaining mildew and spray the affected areas with more white vinegar. Use a bristled brush to scour the area, and then rinse off any residual paste. If mildew is still present, use more paste and vinegar to treat the affected area again until the mildew is gone.

How To Clean Off Mold On Tile Grout Or Caulk

You can use a fungicidal cleaner such as the product shown at left if you like, but any household cleaner, even plain soap and water will do fine. It’s the cleaning that is important, not surface infection, when we’re removing mold.

Preventing future mold growth can be assured more reliably by fixing the conditions that invited it in the first place, rather than by relying on mold killing sprays.

Bleach solution to clean off mold is not necessary – the object is to remove mold, not kill it.

But since cleaning off surface mold may leave stains in the tile grout, you might prefer to bleach that surface anyway. If you are going to use bleach to clean mold anyway, perhaps for cosmetic reasons,

For tile and grout, youll want to remove as much of the moisture as possible and keep the area sanitized:

  • Use a squeegee to quickly remove standing water in the floor of your shower.
  • Keep a separate towel and quickly wipe down the shower walls after each shower, or to wipe down grout and tiles around the sink in your kitchen and bathroom after theyve gotten wet.
  • Run a properly ventilated bathroom fan during and for one hour after each shower or bath.
  • After thoroughly cleaning your grout, using the above instructions, apply a proper grout sealer. This will make the grout much less porous and less likely to hold moisture.

How To Remove Mold From Showercaulking

The ideal thing you can do to remove black mold in shower caulking is to remove the caulking altogether and apply new high-quality mold resistant caulking like this one. This is important because a good mold resistant caulk will help prevent water damage and mold from happening behind your tile and shower walls.

This is actually easier than itsounds. Even I can handle doing this. While it doesnt take long to actuallyremove and replace the shower caulk, it does require you to let it dry properlybefore using your shower again.

Dont want to remove and replace the shower caulk? You can try this mold removal method but it is time consuming and usually doesnt get more than 50-60% of the mold.

How To Get Rid Of Black Mold In Shower Caulking

This homemade tile floor cleaner will get your floors clean and save ...

I wrote a whole post about removing black mold from shower caulking, though my bleach method has been critiqued for not actually doing more than removing the stain and color of the mold. And the mold did come back 6-9 months later.

You can see my video tutorial about how I did it though:

This is because bleach is no longer considered to be the best way to remove mold. It is only effective if the mold is on a non-porous material like tile, bathtubs, glass, and countertops. It doesnt reach the mold growing underneath the surface. Also, bleach can damage the materials it is used on as its a harsh, corrosive chemical. The fumes are strong and harsh and it must be handled with gloves.

But, it does do a great job at removing the mold stains, but the mold isnt truly killed. If you want to get rid of the possibility of future mold growth, bleach isnt going to cut it.

You can instead use vinegar, baking soda, ammonia, oxygen bleach, borax or hydrogen peroxide.

I, however, have not been able to find many tutorials on how to use these products specifically for cleaning moldy caulking in bathrooms, so if anyone has tried using them, with success, Id love to know! I tried making a paste of water and OxiClean and slathered it onto the moldy caulking, but it did absolutely nothing. It dried out shortly after application and didnt remove the mold or the stains at all.

Adding new caulk is a great way to spruce up that moldy shower.

Black or red mold can make your tile shower look ugly and create an unsanitary condition in your home. Toxic mold growing in the shower grout can start getting into the walls of your home. Bacteria, germs and other harmful pathogens can also start growing in your shower that can cause health problems for your family and pets.

Cleaning and removing the mold in your shower requires a systematic approach using a combination of cleaning products and procedures. You not only want to clean up the mold but to also kill the mold that is growing in the porous grout lines. Killing the mold win ensure that it will not readily re grow in the shower when the shower is used again.

Moldy shower grout and caulk are typically the main concerns in a tile shower. The porous grout is a perfect breading grout for mold to grow. If the grout has not been adequately sealed then the mold can more easily grow in the grout lines. Moldy caulk is another issue that is almost always present in a moldy shower. If cheap latex or siliconized caulks were used then the mold can actually grow in the caulking. It is almost always necessary to remove this moldy caulk let the shower thoroughly dry out to ensure that any mold under the caulking has been killed and removed. Then only 100% silicone caulking should be used to replace the moldy shower caulk.

    Cleaning Tips And Reminders

    • Never mix vinegar and bleach together. Many online resources will talk of a solution consisting of the two to kill mold, but vinegar and bleach can create toxic chlorine gas, which is irritating to eyes, lungs, and skin.
    • Always wear gloves when handling cleaning supplies, especially if you have sensitive skin. Make sure to have proper ventilation.
    • Wear a protective mask when dealing with mold to prevent the inhalation of mold spores. Particularly when dealing with unknown black mold, best to wear protective gear.
