How To Prevent Mold In Shower Grout

The most important step to cleaning mold growth in shower grout is to figure out why mold is growing in the first place and to take some preventative measures:

  • Mold grows best on bathroom surfaces when its damp and dark. Make sure there is plenty of airflow in your bathroom. Running an exhaust fan or opening windows after showering will help dry the walls and floor quicker, making it less likely for mold to be able to start growing.
  • Wipe down wet surfaces with a dry towel after showering.
  • Applying grout sealer in the shower and on tile floors helps to keep water from soaking into the pores in the grout and also makes cleaning much easier.

How To Prevent Black Mold In Your Bathroom

To keep the black mold away, you need to do the following:

  • Let natural light into the bathroom. Natural light kills mold and most types of harmful microorganisms.
  • Ventilate the bathroom as much as possible. This may take the form of allowing in natural currents of air or creating some with a fan .
  • Eliminate the dampness and keep your bathroom dry. As stated earlier on, damp conditions are a breeding ground for mold. Having a dry bathroom entails cleaning any remaining water after a shower, fixing leaking taps or pipes and wiping off water from the walls and floor.
  • Spray the bathroom walls and floors with white vinegar. This kills the mold and any remaining spores.
  • Frequently wash your shower curtains and liners. Also, it is better to go for curtains and liners that are resistant to mildew. The same goes for bathroom rags and any clothing materials including your towels.
  • Avoid leaving bottles or other items in the bathroom. These provide crevices for mold to thrive.

With these tips, your bathroom will easily be free of mold and mildew. While cleaning is easy, prevention is far much easier and safer.

Best Way To Remove Mold And Mildew From Tile Grout

As a bathtub re-finisher, I am constantly asked how to remove mold and mildew from around the tub and within the grout lines on the tile surround or inside a shower. It is actually black mildew that we are fighting and its not an easy fight.

Mildew binds itself to porous areas and areas that give it a surface to cling to such as silicone caulk. When you have mildew on the caulk between a bathtub and the surround it is best to remove it and just start over with a non-silicone caulk with a mildew resistant micro-ban additive.

Take a utility knife and score the old caulk length-wise from the top and from the side repeatedly until you have the majority removed. Then take your window scraper razor blade and go after the rest. Before you caulk it back in get all the nearby mildew removed as well.

Mildew thrives in a higher PH environment. Soap and minerals have higher PH levels and thus encourage mildew to grow. Staying on top of soap and minerals is the way to keep mildew at bay and this is done with a more acidic, lower PH cleaner such as Barkeepers Friend, which I highly recommend.

The key to removing mildew is by keeping a strong bleach solution on top of the affected area for a good amount of time. Having a strong grout brush is also important to impregnate the solution into the grout and work the mildew loose.

Stay at it and you will get rid of that mold and mildew in your grout!

Gently Scrape The Top Layer Of The Grout

If you find stubborn, embedded mold in the grout, you can use a grout knife to gently scrape the damaged layer of grout off of the surface. However, do this cautiously since the tool is perfect for removing grout, and you only want to remove the upper stained layer. Removing too much will encourage mold growth in the future.

Eliminate The Mold Triggers

Removing the mold is just half of the job done. If you will not change the environment in the shower, it is a matter of time until the mold will form again. For this reason, it is essential to detect what was the cause of mold growth and try to limit it.

Here are the two essential factors that might be the cause of the mold in your shower: humidity and pH.

Humidity

If you have mold in your shower, you are probably dealing with a hydrophilic mold type such as Stachybotrys , which needs high water activity to grow. Because of that, it is essential to limit the moisture to a minimum. Here are a couple of tips, how to achieve it:

  • Install a bathroom exhaust fan above the shower. It should help to remove the humidity from the bathroom.
  • Take cooler showers to limit the steam. It is a money-saving and healthy option.
  • Use a squeegee to remove water from the walls after you take a shower. It will help the walls to dry quicker, which should hinder the molds growth. As a bonus, you will decrease the amount of soap scum that might build up on the walls or shower doors.
  • pH

As it was stated earlier, mold thrives in pH 3 7. Changing the pH of the grout will help you to create a hostile environment for the mold. For this purpose, from time to time, pour a solution of baking soda and water onto the shower walls where the mold used to form. This way, you will protect the grout from the potential future mold build-up.

Why You Should Consult With An Expert

As well as being hard work and messy, working with mould can be quite dangerous, particularly in areas that are not well-ventilated such as shower cubicles and bathrooms. Microscopic mould spores can be dislodged at any time and easily inhaled by the person removing the mould. This can make it quite the health risk for the do it yourself mould treater.

Even if the job is done effectively at a surface level, it is unlikely that most homeowners will be able to pick up the source of the mould outbreak and effectively deal with that. If mould is occurring in shower areas it could well be evident in other areas of the home as well. Only by consulting a mould expert can you be sure that your home will be rid of the mould.
