Chronic Invasive Fungal Sinusitis Symptoms
Those with chronic invasive fungal sinusitis usually have symptoms of a long-standing sinus infection, including:

What Is A Mold Allergy

Test After Test With No Answers
That was the first episode, lasting for three months starting in November of 2010. In that time she lost twenty-five pounds, was forced to abandon her practice, and withdrew from activities outside the home. Her doctor, family, and friends told her that they thought she had depression or even bipolar disorder. She resisted, even in her confused and debilitated state, and insisted on further testing, believing that something was terribly wrong.
After a series of blood tests, her general practitioner diagnosed Kimberlyn with heavy metal poisoning and recommended she undergo chelation therapy. After undergoing this treatment, she did feel better. However, within five months the illness returned.
During her second cycle of illness, Kimberlyn sought out another doctor who performed a series of tests and suggested that maybe Kimberlyn was suffering from mold illness, also known as toxic mold syndrome. This was the first time mold had been suggested as a possible cause for Kimberlyns symptoms and was unexpected due to the arid climate of Arizona. Yet after having her home tested, three different types of toxic mold were found, including Stachybotrys, also known as black mold.

Can I Prevent Fungal Sinusitis

You may have been told that your sinus infection is a mold sinus infection. Typically along with this explanation, you may have been told that there is no good treatment for this condition.
Allergic Fungal Sinusitis is a very frustrating condition to treat as it is not like a typical bacterial sinus infection at all.
AFS is actually not an infection, but really an overzealous local immune response in the nasal and sinus tissue to exposure to mold.
Mold spores are very light and are floating in the air. In patients with AFS, they breathe the mold into their nasal and sinus cavities causing an intense and exuberant short term and long term allergic inflammatory reaction.
The nasal and sinus lining develops severe swelling. This causes a blockage of the sinus outflow tracts, trapping some mold to grow and accumulate inside the sinuses. Associated pooling of sinus secretions creates a secondary bacterial infection in most cases as well.
This persistent reaction fails to respond to traditional medical treatment for sinus infection. Instead, it progresses to develop nasal polyps. These polyps are not malignant but instead, they are just extremely swollen lining that hangs into the nasal airway like large grapes.
The patient is usually miserable, with severe nasal blockage and sinus complaints, with only temporary relief with systemic steroids and antibiotics.

Identifying specific fungal organisms in CRS caused by mold requires specific fungal staining methods to identify hyphae in sinus specimens or identification of mold by Q-PCR . Treatment of fungal CRS may require the use of oral antifungals, as well as intranasal sprays with antifungal activity, depending upon the improvement of individual patient condition . In addition, biofilms, antifungal shelf-life and antifungal resistance must be considered as other variables in effectiveness of treatment .

What Is Chronic Sinusitis
To meet the clinical definition of chronic rhinosinusitis , cases should meet the following criteria:
A diagnosis of CRS based on patient history
An abnormal endoscopic sinus exam and abnormal sinus CT scan
Symptoms that are present for at least 3 months and include 2 or more of the following:
facial pain or pressure,
facial congestion or fullness,
nasal obstruction or blockage,
nasal discharge/purulence/discoloration,
postnasal drainage, or hyposmia/anosmia .
Sinusitis must be present for at least 3 months and been treated with antibiotics for 46 weeks , with symptoms persisting or recurring after cessation of antibiotic treatment.
