Can Black Mold Cause Lung Nodules

Treatment Of Lung Nodules

What are the effects of mold in the lungs?

Treatment options depend on the specific cause, size, and general appearance of the lung nodule. Nodules felt to be benign or caused by infection may be treated with antibiotics and/or observed with a repeat CT scan 8 weeks later to be certain the nodule is not growing larger.

When there is a concern that the nodules are cancerous, an operation may be required to prove if there is in fact a malignancy. If a primary lung cancer is discovered, a portion of the lung may need to be removed . This can usually be performed minimally invasively with video-assisted thoracic surgery , in which small instruments and a camera are inserted into the chest through several very small incisions.

The thoracic surgeon will discuss the diagnosis and possible treatment options with you and help you to determine the best course of treatment.

The Allergenic Impact Of Toxic Mold

As alluded to above, many people experience an allergic reaction to virtually all kinds of toxic mold. According to the CDC, people who are sensitive to mold can experience all of the following symptoms:

  • Chronic rhinitis
  • Throat irritation
  • Skin irritation

While these issues dont sound particularly risky, sustained allergic reactions can gradually result in the development of more hazardous conditions. Over time, the irritation associated with rhinitis and frequent coughing harms the sufferers delicate mucus membranes. This can lead to recurrent infections of the lungs, sinuses, and ears. Chronic allergic reactions have also been linked to a higher incidence of migraine headaches.

How Long Does It Take To Recover From Breathing In Mold

I had so much mold in my body that it took several months for the ebb and flow of flu symptoms to go away. As you kill the mold and there are less organisms in your body, you will start to feel better. It took my husband six months to become free and clear of mold while it took me a year and a half.

What About Toxic Mold

Some molds do make toxins, but scientists donât actually call them âtoxicâ molds. That name came more from the news than science. Two of the more well-known types are Stachybotrys and Aspergillus.

Stachybotrys. Better known as black mold, this one gets a lot of press. But thereâs no research that shows a definite link between its toxins and serious illness.

That doesnât mean itâs not a concern, but itâs often blamed without real proof. Researchers are still trying to understand if and how it affects people.

Black mold isnât rare, but itâs also not very common. And it needs a lot of moisture to grow. So even if you have black-colored mold in your bathroom, itâs not likely this one.

Aspergillus. Some types of this mold make aflatoxins, which can make you very sick, even causing liver cancer. Typically, thatâs from eating it, not breathing it in.

It grows on food, like corn, peanuts, and even coffee beans. Thereâs never been an outbreak of sickness from aflatoxins in the U.S. Thatâs because the U.S. and many other countries test their foods for it. And food makers treat for it before it reaches you. At low levels, itâs just not an issue.

Searching For Gaps In Our Knowledge

What Kind Of Cancer Does Black Mold Cause

Anita Sil, MD, PhD, a microbiologist at UC San Francisco is working to crack this central mystery of Coccidioides: why the fungus makes some people so sick and not others.

To do so, she said, we must first learn a lot more about the basic biology of the fungus and how it behaves inside a host. We actually know much less about fungal pathogens than we do about other types of microbial pathogens, she said.

UCSF postdoc Bastian Joehnk suits up before entering a Biosafety Level 3 lab to study the fungus that causes Valley Fever. Strict safety precautions are followed when handling Coccidioides immitis because anyone can be infected by the airborne fungus.

The fungus Coccidioides immitis is shown next to macrophages . Image by Anita Sil laboratory

Coccidioides immitis evolved in the Americas long before humans arrived in the New World. It evolved to infect small mammals, like rodents, which may have served as precious sources of food and water in the desert. As more humans moved into these hot arid regions, farming and building in the dusty soil, the fungus infected us, too. It is one of a class of soil fungi known to cause disease and to shape-shift inside a host. In its spherule phase, the fungus is larger than the immune cells that would normally take up and destroy harmful microbes.

Anita Sil, MD, PhD

These precautions are necessary because the fungus infects easily through inhalation and can make even healthy people sick, said Sil.

Myths About Black Mold

Its important to address myths some people may have about black mold. One common rumor is that black mold releases toxic compounds called mycotoxins that cause health issues, like memory loss, headaches, and infant pulmonary hemorrhage.

But according to a review from 2017, theres no evidence that exposure to black mold causes particular health conditions.

Furthermore, while a variety of molds produce mycotoxins, these compounds are primarily dangerous for humans only when eaten in significant quantities.

A 2019 review of research into this topic states theres currently no evidence that mycotoxins in the air cause disease.

A Breakthrough In The Physics Of Blood Clotting

First author Yueyi Sun inside Georgia Techs Complex Fluids Modeling and Simulation Lab, where she compares the experimental and simulated platelet-driven fibrin clot contraction process.

Heart attacks and strokes the leading causes of death in human beings are fundamentally blood clots of the heart and brain. Better understanding how the blood-clotting process works and how to accelerate or slow down clotting, depending on the medical need, could save lives.

New research by Georgia Tech and Emory University published in the journal Biomaterials sheds new light on the mechanics and physics of blood clotting through modeling the dynamics at play during a still poorly understood phase of blood clotting called clot contraction.

Blood clotting is actually a physics-based phenomenon that must occur to stem bleeding after an injury, said Wilbur A. Lam, W. Paul Bowers Research Chair, in the Department of Pediatrics and the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology. The biology is known. The biochemistry is known. But how this ultimately translates into physics is an untapped area.

And thats a problem, argues Lam and his research colleagues, since blood clotting is ultimately about how good of a seal can the body make on this damaged blood vessel to stop bleeding, or when this goes wrong, how does the body accidentally make clots in our heart vessels or in our brain?

Removing Mold From Your Home

What Happens When Exposed to Mold?

Resolve any issues causing mold growth, and throw away anything affected by mold or contributing to mold growth that you cant clean.

  • Wear protective gear. As youre dealing with the moldy area, cover yourself with a mask, gloves, goggles, and rubber boots. If youre cleaning a lot of mold, you can also wear disposable clothing or a mold-resistant suit.
  • Ventilate the room. Open all doors and windows to increase ventilation.
  • Sort and discard. Remove any objects from the area that havent been touched by mold growth. Throw away any items that cant be cleaned.
  • Replace moldy housing materials. Cut away and replace mold-damaged drywall, ceiling tiles, and carpet.
  • Scrub and disinfect. Cover and scrub nonporous surfaces affected by mold with bleach, a fungicide, or detergent and water, then dry them. Dont mix cleaning products together.
  • Address any water issues. Make sure any water problems are fixed and the area is dry before you renovate the room.

You cant prevent all mold, but you can reduce the amount in your home. Here are some dos and donts for managing mold and keeping it from growing indoors.

Sputum Examination And Potassium Hydroxide Stain

This study may show fungal hyphae or yeasts. However, the results must correlate with the clinical situation, because saprophytic colonization occurs in the oropharyngeal or respiratory tract of some patients and may not necessarily indicate invasive infection.

Carefully transport, process, and culture specimens that may be contaminated by bacteria, may be saprophytic yeasts endogenous to the oral cavity, and may be airborne conidia of saprophytic fungi.

The diagnosis of pulmonary cryptococcal infection is confirmed if the organism is grown in culture from sputum or BAL fluid in a patient who has clinical symptoms and radiographic finding compatible with cryptococcosis.

Histoplasmosis is definitively diagnosed by growth of the organism in sputum BAL fluid, lung tissue, or mediastinal nodes can be cultured.

In pulmonary sporotrichosis, the recovery of the fungi by culture of sputum and/or positive bronchoscopy are required for diagnosis.

Cultures from sputum samples collected by fiber optic bronchoscopy are not valuable for the diagnosis of pneumonia by Candida. To make the diagnosis, a biopsy is required to demonstrate tissue invasion. Colonization of the respiratory tract by Candida is very frequent in critically ill patients with mechanical ventilation, but pneumonia by Candida is extremely rare because the innate defense mechanisms of the lungs make them relatively resistant to candida invasion.

Is There More Than One Type Of Aspergillosis

There are several types of aspergillosis.

Pulmonary aspergillosis is most likely to develop in people who have chronic lung disorders or damaged lungs. These people are likely to have abnormal spaces in their lungs where the fungus can grow. The fungus can also rarely infect sinuses and ear canals. The mold spores can colonize inside lung cavities that developed as a result of chronic diseases, such tuberculosis, emphysema, or advanced sarcoidosis. The fibers of fungus might form a lump by combining with white blood cells and blood clots. This lump or ball of fungus is called an aspergilloma or mycetoma. In some cases, a fungus ball may be present in other organs of the body.

Invasive aspergillosis, the most severe type, occurs when the infection travels from the lungs into the bloodstream. Other organs, such as the kidneys, liver, skin or brain, may become infected. This is a very serious condition that may result in death if not treated. People with very weakened immune systems are more susceptible to invasive aspergillosis. Other risk factors include a low white blood cell count, long-term use ofcorticosteroids, or hospitalization.

How Are Lung Nodules Diagnosed

Most people find out they have a lung nodule after getting an imaging test in preparation for a procedure or another purpose. The findings are often a surprise.

If an imaging test shows a lung nodule, your healthcare provider may recommend active surveillance. In six to 12 months, you get another CT scan. Nodules that stay the same size during a two-year surveillance period are not likely to be cancer. You may be able to stop getting CT scans.

Your provider may order further tests if the nodule is large or it grows. These tests include:

  • Bronchoscopy: While youre sedated, your provider threads a thin tube down your throat into the lung. A tiny surgical instrument on the end of the scope snips and retrieves a tissue sample from the nodule. A lab analyzes this biopsy sample for abnormal cells.
  • CT scan-guided biopsy: For nodules on the outer part of the lung, your provider uses CT images to guide a thin needle through the skin and into the lung. This needle biopsy takes tissue samples from the nodule to examine for abnormal cells.
  • Positron emission tomography scan: A PET scan uses a safe, injectable radioactive chemical and an imaging device to detect diseased cells in organs.

How Can You Tell If You Have Farmer’s Lung

The signs and symptoms of Farmer’s Lung vary tremendously. The allergic response of the afflicted person depends on the sensitivity of the individual and the amount of moldy dust entering the lungs. The reaction can be a sudden attack or symptoms associated with a slow progressive illness.

Usually, people with Farmer’s Lung do not associate their health problem with exposure to moldy hay. Instead, they go to their doctors complaining of breathing problems. It is important to recognize the danger of working with moldy crops and to be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of Farmer’s Lung. This awareness enables people with symptoms to get medical help before it becomes a serious illness.

There are three different types of allergic responses: acute or intense attack, sub-acute or low-level response, and chronic or long-term response.

Who Gets Aspergillosis

Exposure to Aspergillus is not likely to cause problems in the majority of people whose immune systems are healthy. However, people with chronic lung problems or people with weak immune systems may be at greater risk for developing the infection. People with weakened immune systems include those people taking chemotherapy or those who have had organ transplants.

What Is The Treatment

For cancerous nodules, Dr. Manganaris says most of the time the only cure is resection removing a lobe of the lung.

I had one patient lose an entire lung. He managed fine with only one lung. Ive seen cancer in smokers as young as 25 years old.

Dr. Manganaris includes counseling as part of the treatment at the clinic. Patients who are smokers get additional counseling aside from discussion about their pulmonary nodule diagnosis.

Pulmonary nodules that are benign normally do not require any treatment because they usually dont cause symptoms or breathing problems. But, they may be monitored with follow-up CT scans. The frequency of these CT scans will vary based on the size of the nodule and the risk factors for lung cancer
